Limited Mins as Freshman to Major Contributor

I am so impressed with Hurley's ability to retain players who played sparingly freshman year, and on top of that, recruiting top tier talent that will compete with them.

Absolutely. The fact that we had only two transfers (a walk-on in Andre Johnson, and Roumoglou) speaks volumes about the buy-in that guys have in the program. Was fully expecting Ross and/or Singare to transfer, and maybe more.... it's just so easy nowadays with teams promising NIL and playing time.

And it makes sense frankly. Hurley has a great track record for developing non-5* players. 7 of the 8 players Hurley has sent to the NBA were not 5* (and it would have been 8 out of 9 if Karaban stayed in the draft).

Ball, Stewart and Ross would all start and play major minutes for any other Big East team, and possibly any other program. However, it got me thinking, which players in the past have played sub 10 mins a game freshman year, and then ended up having big careers? Hilton, Stanley, and maybe Gavin Edwards? And what about the reverse?
To be honest, kind of silly to compare considering today’s college basketball is a whole different world with the transfer portal- not sure if you were even trying to compare or not so I apologize ahead of time if you weren’t.

Omar Calhoun
Omar was so derailed by injuries. Got off to a decent start his sophomore year before it all fell apart. At least he had that amazing game against Ohio State his senior year. One of the brightest spots of the post-2014 Kevin Ollie era
