Latest Hockey Arena Update (Approved)

Place is an absolute dump. It appears they have not dumped a single capital dollar into that place. Looks like the same hole it was when I was 8, 35 years ago

Bad place to watch a game, but a great sheet of ice. It does have a great Hockey shop.

Construction material costs have doubled since covid, which I'm sure is one of the contributing factors.

You mentioned Bolton, Enfield Twin Rinks which from Storrs is about 40 minutes, Norwich, 40-45 minutes and Trinity 35-40 minutes, Jahn Rink in Pomfret 35 minutes. I live just off campus and I can make Hartford in 30 minutes.

Right - i don't consider any of these "local" to Storrs, at least not by comparison to SHU and most of my list there. You can draw a 10-15 mile circle from SHU and hit more rinks than you can in your 30-45 min list for Storrs.

Don’t forget South Windsor arena.

I loved going here as a kid for new gear. I'd spend at least a half hour upstairs where they kept the hockey sticks looking for the best ones back when wooden hockey sticks were the only option.

what does it cost to outfit a child for hockey these days?

Fiance got her skates at SWA. That place has not had so much as a new nail put in it since 1987.

Yes. Construction-materials are insane right now. Though UConn is a big enough entity that it might not get gouged too much.

I’ve seen parts of this before but here it is in full ... cash in those cans & bottles:

I don't know how to link it but there are opportunities starting at $5000. I found it on uconnhuskies.com.
Maybe I'll win mega millions tonight to consider the bigger donations.

JeanofCT Forum. I like it.

Per recent Building & Grounds Committee meeting minutes.

Final approval for the new arena and parking area by BOT is scheduled for April 28. Total budget is $77 million dollars with the arena costing $70 millions. Updated interior rendering shows chair back seating with no bleacher seating. Construction fencing scheduled to be installed the first week of May. Arena details are on pages 32-35 and pages 59-67. Looks like redevelopment of Guyer Gym and Greer Field House are on the horizon.

As noted deep within the above:

This is part of the plan that is necessary for the Gampel Concourse.

-> In the bowl, the seating will consist of 80% with seatbacks and 20% on benches. The team facilities will include full Division I training and support for the women’s and men’s teams; team lounges; dry locker area and locker rooms with video displays; locker rooms for the visiting teams; training space with a hydrotherapy area; strength and conditioning room; and other areas such as coaches’ offices, a press box, dining area, ice plant and spaces for support services.

The new facility will also have a large center-hung display scoreboard with perimeter ribbon boards and will be designed to create an outstanding experience for fans with state-of-the-art sound and lighting features. <-
