Lasan Kromah commits to Uconn

Hopefully I can help out a bit, since I'm at gw and have seen him play. He's a decent scorer, can hit some threes, and has some pretty good moves to the basket. He's better than rj, more athletic for sure. I think this will be a good addition and really help us out when it comes to depth

His FT percentage seems better than RJ's. He is supposed to be a good defender - have you seen him defend? Is he someone we can throw to lockdown an opposing shooting guard with his height and athleticism?

Right, it seemed to me many of our freshman transfers didn't exactly post the best grades.

Why take the academic chance on a guy who probably won't cut it on the court is what I'm husky saying.
You seem to be very confused about what is actually happening here.

UConn was an NIT team Ricky's sophomore year. The year they lost to UNC, KEA was a freshman and Ricky slid over to the 2. That was his junior year. Ricky was not great as the starting PG as a sophomore...earned the nickname "Rickety" from a lot of boneyarders. Team was loaded with freshmen (albeit good ones, RIP, K-Free, Jake) and it's most experienced player, Kirk King, was suspended for much of the year.

Kirk was suspended with Ricky..............

You're absolutely right. I can't believe I screwed that up. I went to the game vs Iona. My bad.

Will be great for the backcourt depth.

If Wolf stays home because he doesn't want to come back as a walk on, it will hurt our rebounding. Not that we had much of it. I think we need to pray for better rebounding.

Anyone complaining about this needs to realize half the reason we got into this APR mess was we took too many incoming freshman with debatable UConn skill sets and they ended up transferring and killing the APR.

That's not half the reason, it's the whole reason. We could withstand guys like Stanley Robinson and Gavin Edwards failing to graduate in vain attempts to pursue professional basketball careers. At least those guys provided some value during their time here.

We couldn't afford players who both offered nothing on the court and also torpedoed our APR off the court.

Yea...I have seen him defend. He has the ability and athleticism to lockdown a guy, but didn't show it as much last year. I have a feeling that under KO with his coaching will be able to get Lasan to go all out and will really help him become a better defender.

My son just graduated GW in Kromah's class and I have watched a lot of GW basketball -- and Kromah -- the last few years. He is much, much more athletic than an RJ Evans. He will not be a super athlete in the -- never mind -- he will not be a super athlete at UConn, but will be athletic enough. He is a scorer -- not a shooter. While he is a better shooter than Evans, he is another slasher type. But more athletic and better able to finish at the rim against better competition. I always felt that Kromah underperformed his god given talent. That was more true under Lonergan -- who many think favored the guys he recruited over Hobb's leftovers -- but it was even true under Hobbs, who thought Kromah was not disciplined enough defensively.

I see him, at UConn, as a back of the rotation player, but not one who is going to be the leader - if underperformer - that RJ was. If we had an open spot, fine. If we pushed someone out for him -- well, I doubt we did. Having said that, he does have the athleticism to perform at a higher level if our staff can get him to learn the subtleties of the game in a manner that GW's staff couldn't.

I like this move. He is 6'5 adds size depth. Will take all Evans minutes maybe takes minutes from Giffey. Let us give Calhoun rest. We don't need guys playing 38 minutes a game.
not to mention Calhoun is coming off double hip surgery ...

I am all for depth just not sure why we need another guard who can not shoot. Looking at his stats you would say we are getting a more athletic RJ Evans. His three point shooting and free throw shooting were horrid for a guard.

If Wolf was gone anyway then why not say yes to a guy who will take up a scholarship for only 1 year? I understand the team needs height but its not like you can just go out and get someone to fill that void.

So which available 5th year transfer would you have preferred?

If you are against this move, essentially you are saying that you would take an empty chair over Kromah. With Wolf's scholarship revoked, we had one that would have gone unused.

Granted, the chair has come a long way since getting torched by Ater Majok, but I think it really had no upside. It had reached it's ceiling.

Moore was still pretty good as a Soph. He got the Huskies to the Elite Eight vs UNC who basically played a home game in Greensboro.

El-Amin committed to Clem Haskins at Minnesota as a freshman, IIRC. He even played in the McD's AA game as a Minn. commit. When the Gophers looked like they were going on probation in 1997, with Haskins taking the fall (basically), he decommitted. Big time steal for UConn.
I totally remember that...I was like oh my goodness...Yes!!! Still probably the best overall class we ever signed (especially in hindsight)...El-Amin, RIP, KFree, who else? Jake? I think so...

That wasn't one class.

We had Ricky and Rash in one class
Rip, Jake, KFree in another
KEA in the next.

He was Rickety Moore and he also perfected the "Ricky Shuffle" that year. That was the year the NCAA did away with the 5 second rule so our half court offense a majority of the time (after Kirk was suspended) was Ricky dribbling back and forth at the top of the key and then him penetrating and tossing if off to someone to take a last second shot. He was pretty bad. Our best game that year was against Kansas in Hartford (pretty sure Ricky and Kirk were just suspended) where Rip played the point and the guys played their asses off in a loss. It was pretty clear that those three frosh would be excellent players and after getting Khalid, we were legit title contenders. We would have been a final four team the next year if we didn't draw UNC in their backyard.

He is a kick in the pants to anyone who gets lazy playing defense. KO knows.

Don't forget Antric Klaiber!

We also brought in Mike LeBlanc and Q (Monquencio Hardnett) with the Jake-Free-Rip class. Souley sort of fell in the middle as a mid-year and had to sit out.

and as has been said, this move has zero downside. Wolf was an ok player who averaged 3 and 3. Let's not make him out to be more than he was. Once Nolan started playing well, no one really missed EW all that much. Now with two big men coming in, we have to hope that they both can play a little and give us what we potentially lose in EW.

That was on the verge of becoming a lock down defending chair. And on offense, Donyell would have a difficult time guarding it. This could have been one of the most complete chairs we have ever had, only to be thrown aside for some GW human. Where has the loyalty gone?

Apparently KO was not confid in what he had??????

Wolfie?? has 6" on this kid!!

But NEED a BOARD-o-VAC. This is is just perif BS that seems to be getting in the way of the mjr issues.
