I LOVED the Big E when I lived back east. San Diego and Los Angeles both have county fairs and they are fun, but not like the Big E. The Big E always feels so "old" meaning it feels like a fair that has been around for many many years. Everything out here on the west coast is "newer".

Plus the Big E has the state houses - one for each state in New England. Maple cotton candy in the Vermont house, clam fritters in the Rhode Island house, lobster rolls in the Maine house, etc. Great memories for me there!! But do not go thinking you are going to find any healthy food. No dieting allowed at the Big E!!!

Im just waiting for the post asking why this or that player isn’t there (like we would know) or mixing up who is who like an eye exam is in order. Also discussion about height and not considering the angle of the photos.

There was a day when using ladies in connection with our Huskies would bring censure. Have I missed the memo?

PS. Is that Saylor front left of the second group photo?

To heck with that. I want to know why I wasn't there. Looks like great fun.

My knees have ended my trips to the Big E but I still have some wonderful memories.

1. The dining experience. The long "street" from the chicken dinner at the Lions Club down to the Polish food stand at the other end. The London Broil sandwiches. And a bag of freshly roasted peanuts for the ride home.

2. The animals. The Bud Clydesdales. The farm "aroma" of the 4H barn.

3. The product displays. I always loved watching the Ginsu knife pitchman was always my favorite. "free juicers come with each knife. Did I say knife? I meant 2 knives."

4.
The rides and games of chance.

I always collapsed once I got home.

I think that Saylor is in the back on the first photo and that the one on the front of the second is Dorka.

I lived in the area for many years and went every third or 4th year...loved it. Same pitchmen...same products...
heck...same jokes to the crowds gathering. I saw a 'bloke' with a heavy English accent selling paint....very successfully.
He had a ton of amusing remarks about 'the colonies' and what a mistake it was that they were not longer British and how he enjoyed his annual trip across 'The Pond'. A couple of days later I am in a paint store in West Springfield on Rte 5 and this same bloke walks in. He goes behind the counter and with nary a trace of British accent asks me if I need any help.

I did mention I enjoyed his spiel at the Big E...he laughed and with his accent back in full force said that he did twist reality just a bit for the 17 days at the fair. I think the attendance tops one million on occasion.
