Koby Brea entered the portal. Please please Coach Hurley

Both Brea and Maheney never made sense. My guess is the staff priortized Maheney and brought in Brea as insurance. The fact Brea is visiting Kentucky has to mean we are in good shape w Aidan.

Ding ding ding

I think some of the hesitation may be on how well-rounded he is as a player. If you dig into his stats beyond the 3P%, things get a bit murky. A catch and shoot guy is great, but if that guy can't drive to the basket and get to the line, he might be of less value. If he's not a plus-defender, he may not fit into Dan's system as well.

To be clear, I don't know how much or little these points apply to Brea.

Last year was well covered with guys who could handle the point Newton, Castle, and Diarra - with Cam I think fine in a pinch.

I mentioned Brea more as an example of them looking for a non-guard type in addition to a ball hander (to serve as backup point guard should Nowell or Diarra get injured). We differ on the need for such a player. I think it is a must (at least at a Cam level, likely better even if only an emergency level player - Bettencourt on the women's team).
Well, Bettencourt entered the portal...

Who else watched her earliest appearances when injuries & foul trouble required putting her into games where the opposition was like sharks smelling blood in the water?

The game clock couldn't run out fast enough.

The last decade:
KY 0 championships
UCONN 3 championships

In Brea's lifetime:
KY 1 championship
UCONN 5 championships

If he's real about intentions, there is one choice
Unfortunately, I think “win a title” is just a cliche. Whatever any player says, the real meaning is “I want to get drafted as soon, and as high, as possible.”

Maybe Hurley didnt't offer? Or maybe his desire to showcase his game, and win a championship, means he thinks he can do it in a less team-oriented system.

Looks like the delay is on our side, not fair to take shots at the kid if that's true

That's weird. If the delay is related to not wanting to upset guys currently on the roster (Ball?), wouldn't we have thought about that before reaching out to Brea and Mahaney.

Leads me to believe we would look to bring in 1-2 guys regardless of the optics to existing players. Has to be something else.

Very peculiar all around.

There's seems to be something that the staff isn't keen/sold on... We can speculate all we want, but there's something amiss. If that's the case, then I trust Dan Hurley immensely.

I do wonder if, with Mahaney committing, we'll get quick resolution one way or another, whether that's the staff cooling on Brea or putting on the full-court-press to complete our 2024-25 roster.

Hard to say if the staff wanted both, or one or the other. We simply don't know.

Nor do we know about the asking price of the bag substantiated or not.

I think with Reed, Mahaney, McNeeley in hand the staff banks the last "open" scholarship and waits to see what Karaban does (assuming Diarra is back)

Seems an expensive one year rental may not fit Hurley's vision

Brea and Mahaney together made a ton of sense before McNeeley signed on. Once we got Liam that could easily have changed plans. Though honestly I think Brea would still start (alongside McNeeley and Mahaney) if he came here.

The bag Kentucky is going to drop on Brea tomorrow is going to choke a horse. The kid just profited bigly on his UConn visit and the fact that Kentucky were also big players in the McNeeley and Mahaney sweepstakes. They absolutely HAVE to close on Brea now to save face after losing the first two to us , and it's going to cost them. Somewhere in the recesses of my mind I am thinking that Hurley absolutely knows this too, and loves sticking it to them.

I think our roster is good- now I am guessing Hurley will wait to see what happens with Karaban & Diarra (?)- think if Karaban decides to stay in the draft can see a late pickup like Spencer from last year…..

Although there's a little crossover between the two which is both can knock down 3s, albeit Brea shots them at a crazy high percentage, they both fill different roles. Mahaney provides lead guard depth, ball handing, 3 level scoring while Brea has been predominantly a 3 Pt 2/3 specialist.

If Brea lands here as well, he'll need to be coached up. Word is he's not a good defender.
But the clips show he's got solid athleticism so maybe he didn't get the coaching he needed, or just didn't want to learn. He won't get the minutes he wants if he doesn't learn to play Hurley's team D and rebounding. A big part of executing on both ends is instincts and BBIQ. If he learns to defend, rebound, pass, cut, screen, drive and score both midrange and at the rim, he'll turn out to be a big surprise. His stats were very much lacking in many of those areas and he was relagated to the 6th man role for a reason. If he contributes just as a 3 Pt specialist off the bench and shots it around that 50% clip, he'd still be an asset to the team, but improving in these other areas would not only benefit the team, it would definitely improve his next level career wherever that takes him.

BTW, many want to compare him to Johnny Cal, but he was more than just a 3pt specialist, who could pass and beat his man off the dribble and get some points inside. Though he buttered his bread from beyond the arc.

I think Hurley doesn’t care about Kentucky and that Brea’s leverage and asking price just took a major hit when the St. Mary’s kid came off the board to UConn.

I would be mildly surprised to see us pursue Brea now. A spot shooter really does not fill a hole that we have - we have better players on the roster already.

And that’s without Karaban who I think is 80/20 for the NBA.

Where has it been reported that Brea will be visiting UK? I've only seen that someone from UK will be visiting him in NY.

With that said, maybe UConn doesn't have a spot for him or maybe they wanted both he and Mahaney, and Brea is just weighing his options still. Don't we have enough ships even if Hass and Alex return?

I wouldn't mind a crazy deep bench where the minutes get distributed more broadly if the chemistry between the different lineups works okay and allows them to play with incredible intensity and less likely to be in serious foul trouble. Not saying that would be the case, but it would be fun to witness.

We're all simply speculating. We'll all find out soon enough.
