OT: Kobe Bryant killed in helicopter crash [merged thread]

Horrible news. I was so looking forward to seeing Gigi as a Husky and then in the WNBA. May both their memories be a blessing.
While Gigi dreamed of being a UConn Husky, we don’t know if she would have ultimately fulfilled that dream or even chosen that path. What is so terribly sad is now that dream no longer exists, extinguished by a tragedy that has taken the life of Gigi and her father, along with the lives of what now appears to be 7 other individuals.

Tomorrow night, UConn will host USA basketball. What should have been a celebration of WBB, will now be overshadowed to a significant extent by sadness, in large measure due to the personal relationship between Kobe and his daughter with Geno and many of the players on both teams.

News media now saying there were 9 people aboard and some not yet identified . Just gets worse.

When I first saw this on the news I hoped it was one of those dreams that are sometimes so real. As great a basketball player as he was he was so much more in the things that really matter in life. He was a great husband and father, a giving member of society, and just a decent human being and it doesn't really get much better that that. Our thoughts and prayers to his family.

@Shades shared this on the General board, but I think these words by Tina Thompson are the best tribute I can think of, about what made Kobe so special as a player and an advocate for women's basketball.

The first 3 minutes are Tina talking about Kobe:

There are no words right now to express my sense of deep sadness.

Prayers and God’s love to Vanessa and the rest of the family.

RIP Kobe
RIp Gianna

Just spoke with my daughter in LA. They are saying there on the news that there was terrible fog and the chopper went into the side of a mountain. Horrible!

So very sad. Thoughts and prayers for the Kobe family/friends, and of course for all the others who lost their lives.

Kobe attend several Oregon WBB games this year and got to know the whole time well. Hard day at the Oregon-Oregon State game.

I apologize in advance for being paranoid...
But has anyone heard from Phee?
Is she playing abroad?

She’s in China. Arrived fairly recently.

Thank you
not the best place to be at the moment
but the alternative is less satisfactory.
Thanks again

Saddened and still in shock. Waking up and seeing the notification on my phone I told myself this couldn't be real but reality doesnt lie. We just lost one of the best supporters and advocates for Womens basketball and for me that causes much grief. Someone now needs to step up to the plate and continue what Kobe was doing for the sport. Even though I'm a Spurs fan, I wish Lebron and co. to go as far as Kobe's spirit and legacy can take them this season. To everyone - please dont take your life for granted and enjoy each day because tomorrow is never promised. To Kobe - thank you for everything you did to promote womens basketball and I appreciate that so much. May you be embraced in the arms of our heavenly father.

What a loss to his family, and the basketball family at large. Great player, great father and man. My heart goes out to all the families affected and to all who loved them.

You could see her tears sporadically appear throughout the game. It had to be hard for her to concentrate. Probable as the game wore on it got easier.

I am heartbroken. As a huge Lakers and UConn fan, we loss a legend and a future UConn Husky. Kobe Bryant and Gianna "GiGi" were in attendance at many UConn and WNBA games. I was looking forward to watching GiGi play at UConn. I know she would have been a very special player. Hopefully, UConn makes GiGi a honorary member of UConn and a Husky. Keep his wife, family, friends and other families in prayer!!
