Well, the Governor did state that Improvements to the RENT are upcoming. Put in the extra seating where the footings are already in place & capacity increases to 55-60K. Add in the Michigan temporary seating for Irish visits & capacity nears 65K.
Absent a relatively respectable conference football invitation, NFW state politicians support extra seats at The Rent. In particular for just some hypothetical 1 per season games with notre dame. For one-offs, reasonable temporary seat additions a la Michigan game may be financially justified.

The only issue is the games at the rent and the capacity. We do home and homes with Navy but they move their home games for larger stadiums.
That was a problem when the schools discussed a potential 10 game deal. I could see doing home, away, neutral, though. When we did a home and away with Michigan, we added in temporary seats to bring the capacity up to 42,500 give or take.

Meh, Notre Dame sounds more desperate than us right now if they're facing a freeze-out
We are nowhere near desperate for scheduling. But what I’m discussing is a potential if we go full independence mode for future games . The months that Notre Dame needs help filling their schedule is October and November.

If y'all get frozen out you sure are

Oh Yeah Surprise GIF

Yeah, not gonna happen. You sure do like to downvote me. Lol
I have a strong suspicion ND will never have an issue getting games scheduled with the military academies and Southern Cal. I imagine they could also easily reestablish long running series with Purdue, Michigan St, Pitt (I remember when those three were always on ND's schedule). They've played Stanford semi-regularly since Pop Warner was Stanford's coach and they've play quite a few games with Michigan over the decades, Miami and Boston College post Ara Parsegian.

There may be a few big names that would no longer consider playing ND but there are plenty of schools (including some who are competitive) that would fill out their schedule.

Those who believe they are a cartel can try to shun them but they won't be as successful in doing so as they believe they will be.

The ACC needs Notre Dame more than Notre Dame needs the ACC. Even looking at Miami - if they hadn't beaten Notre Dame and instead beat some random mid-tier P4, they would have been sitting home and Vandy/BYU/etc. would have gotten the spot. The ND win was their marquee win.

As for football in general - the Notre Dame fan base definitely trends old, but they all watch every game on TV and they have the money to travel. Three quarters of ACC teams are struggling to fill their stadiums, but the ticket vs. Notre Dame every 4th-5th (ish) year drives single and season tickets. The year we had Michigan on our schedule we sold out some pretty lousy games with a pretty mediocre team.

Eventually college football isn't going to be two-tier (P4 vs. G6), it's going to be three-tier (SEC+Big 10 vs. ACC-Big 12 vs. G-everyone else - all of this with some movement available). The ACC is definitely the first conference of the Power 4 that's going to be devalued down to the mid-tier. Notre Dame is the wild card for them. As for other conferences locking them out of their schedule, wait til you fill the Notre Dame home-and-home game with Central Michigan and see who shows up. This is especially true of a handful of programs that have fallen off a cliff the past few years (UCLA, for example) but also the ones who just recently started to struggle (Baylor, Wisconsin, etc.) - attendance isn't an issue there yet however that could change with a few more years of struggle.
I don’t think Miami would have a problem adding a quality team. It’s most other schools, like who ND plays next year, who need ND.

USC seems to be backing away from playing Notre Dame every year. Scheduling and travel concerns with USC now in the Big 10 seem to be an issue as well as how difficult USC's schedule is some years. Next year, they are scheduled to play at Indiana, at Penn St, Ohio St, Oregon, Washington, and possibly Notre Dame. After the tentative 2026 game with Notre Dame, ND and USC do not have any future scheduled games.

Notre Dame's relationship with the ACC locks in 5 games per season which means Notre Dame has to schedule 7 games. If Notre Dame went fully independent, I would think they would have a tough time scheduling 12 games with a reasonable number of tough opponents each year. Scheduling difficulties is one of the reason Notre Dame signed up to play Clemson every year.
