You know who else is a sharp cookie? Rob Vietzkie. He's a long-time UConn guy, and someone you want in a leadership position if you're trying to network to the CIC's Omnipop. Here is his Internet2 bio: Link. I've viewed a few of his interviews on YouTube, and he really is a brilliant guy. Looks like he was invited to participate in a delegation to India which was organized by Indiana University and the Internet2 presidents: Link.

This is true, however, "only" 108 of the 267 have level 1 access (highest access). I think perhaps the most important takeaway from this is UConn is plug-n-play OmniPop ready if the B1G comes a callin'.
 
Here's a little refresher on the structure of the CIC's network:
1) In circa 2001, the CIC universities contributed tens of millions of dollars to found the OmniPop intranet, which links all CIC universities on an exclusive basis.
2) Indiana University serves as the nerve center of the OminPop. This nerve center is called GlobalNoc.
3) CIC purchases/leases Level(3) fiber optic ring in Chicago for routing/storage. B1G schools choose this location for the BTN.
4) BTN begins broadcasting in 2007

*All OmniPop/GlobalNoc/BTN routing facilities are staffed by CIC personnel.

If you take a look at the atlas, you'll see several recognizable badges. One which may not be recognizable is GPN (Great Plains Network). GPN connects Nebraska to OmniPop. Of course, you'll see Internet2, which as of February 2015, UConn is connected. There is also NCSA, which is the National Center for Supercomputing Applications at the University of Illinois.

In 2010 there was a major push by the CIC to upgrade security for assets being/ going to be shared over OmniPop. The Blue Waters Supercomputer at NCSA is one of those assets. Curiously enough, the CIC universities chose to participate in a joint credentialing process with two other universities: the University of Washington and Virginia Tech. A nice synopsis of this lengthy process is detailed at the NCSA's Cyber Security website: InCommon Silver Certification. Virginia Tech was the first to reach the highest 'silver' credential, and VPI's process has severed as a case study for the CIC although the credentialing process is still ongoing.

Anyone know if internet2 uses dedicated fiber or do they share with us commoners?
