Kenpom Program ratings 1997-2025 (UConn 10th)

There was a list like this within the last few years (ESPN maybe?) where they gave points for how well a team did each season, including the NCAA Tournament, and then added up the points. UConn was up there but not near the top because they haven't been as consistent as Kansas, Duke, etc. Those years the Huskies missed the NCAA Tournament were an anchor on the rating. But who cares? We'll take the 6 National Championships and tell everyone to screw.
 
This dude must get bored as sh over the summer. Almost as useless as Lunardi’s bracketology in May. National Championships should weigh MUCH more than any other variable in there. It’s the ultimate goal for every team, every season and we’re far ahead of everyone on that list.

He’s coming out with the average shoe size per roster and how foot stability leads to efficiency.
 
From a modeling perspective, UConn going to 7 final fours and winning 6 of them is always going to jump off the screen. So I can understand if the point of this list is to highlight the unsustainability of that.

But you could also look at it the other way and say the bad seasons are actually the fluky ones and that UConn could have more than 6 titles. What Hurley has done the last three years is actually more comparable to peak Geno. Why assume 1997-2022 is the baseline for what the program can accomplish when the more recent data suggests it can be even more dominant?

Anyone who thinks UConn is the 10th best job in the country when it's effectively won 6 of the last 19 titles titles when it hasn't had the AAC noose draped around its neck needs to use their own brain to come up with a better formula.
 
Money aside, and I know that's not a realistic view, but I always found it odd that someone would argue about a school consistently being top 25 with some top 10s but rarely winning big as a better option than having our ups and downs with mostly being excellent but sometimes being poopy.

Were those years like 2007 and 2012 great fun? Not necessarily, but I'd rather have those in between 2 chips in 5 years rather than 5 straight years of being top 10 but never getting to a F4, for example.

The third most final fours, the most titles and this is the crappy rating. Sorry but winning should mean more than Texas at the very least.

SIX National Championships are better than all the rest.

Would any UConn fan trade our results for anybody else's? I doubt it

OK, we've had a few dark years, but that just makes us appreciate winning even more

LOL. Fun fact: Indiana didn’t win the NBA title.

KenPom seems to massively overemphasize the worst seasons to knock UConn down, but not wipe some of the other teams out when, like Louisville, they have wretched seasons. Oregon at 25 is about the same distance to UConn at 10 as UConn is to North Carolina at 5. Any algorithm that generates that outcome should be discarded and KenPom should start from scratch.

Are you talking about the forfeited games where UConn effectively created “violations” to fire Ollie, ruining his career with a “show cause”, because UConn wanted to get out of a contract, and then Ollie handed UConn its ass in court?

If KenPom wants to have a “consistency rating” then just call it a consistency rating. Don’t call it the best programs of the last 28 years, because it isn’t.

Always amusing when he describes what the rating means, what the rating does NOT mean, and how it is calculated and then people get mad because it doesn’t measure exactly what they think should count or how they would do it.. Make your own ratings then!

No one is telling you your team is not pretty. They are very, very pretty and you can like them as much as you want.

Also, the qualifier average human in the phrase which job would the average human take if presented with two options kind of eliminates your coach. And I say that with love.

I think Hurley must be really jealous that Mick Cronin and Sean Miller got better jobs than him.
 
Ken would post a most likely place to rain but not account for any conditions that actually influence precipitation just to list as many top college locations to his name.

Does the last column represent movement in the rankings? How can we drop three if only one team moved up around us?

I think this is what I was thinking of. Matt Norlander of CBS Sports did this 5 years ago using data going back to the advent of the NCAA Tournament in 1939. UConn was #8 when he did this. I'd have to imagine UConn would be in the top 5 now with the same criteria.

(Dan wouldn’t have taken it because Andrea would have murdered him in public, but he also was never offered a contract by UK)

I try and stay objective in this highly non objective community and I 100% agree with this. Give me titles - second place is the first loser.

All the “blue bloods” will argue all the peripheral metrics to their support and they would all trade spots with us in a blink of an eye.

This chart should be taught in class about harmonic compounding errors in statistical bias.

This period includes all 6 UConn titles and the formula puts us below Texas, UCLA, and Michigan St?

Mr. Pom needs to admit maybe conference affiliation and recruiting don't belong in a backward looking metric.
