I applaud your appropriate use of tenterhooks! A tenterhook is defined as "a sharp hooked nail used especially for fastening cloth on a tenter." As for the word tenter, that means “a frame used for drying and stretching cloth, typically a tent or similar structure” so being “on tenterhooks” compares the tenseness of the stretched fabric to the tension of nervous waiting. I agree. No more nervous waiting...Stay, go, whatever - I’m not exactly waiting around on tenterhooks.
