As for the word tenter, that means “a frame used for drying and stretching cloth, typically a tent or similar structure” so being “on tenterhooks” compares the tenseness of the stretched fabric to the tension of nervous waiting. I can’t believe how many randoms are out there these days. The Horde is down to 2. And I don’t know how long the Hartford Courant has left as a going concern.
