Karaban still weighing decision whether to return or go pro

My alternate theory at this point is that he's currently interviewing for an NBA coaching job that Hurley is also going after, but neither knows the other is being considered.
That’s as good a theory as some of the other theories in this thread.

how do you not know what copyright infringement is?
Sorry first week on SC- I swear I read it was ok to share stuff if you credit them, which I did, as long as they didn’t specifically ask that it not be shared. Guess not.

He must have told staff he is coming back, otherwise he’s hurting the team with the delay- they can’t go after anyone else and the number of players available keeps getting smaller and smaller

How many portal forwards that we were considering signed somewhere else this past week?

And post #2 said this “Should be a brief thread.” Doomed!
I stand by my original post, both in the anticipating the futility of trying to control any group narrative by claiming what "should" be, and the knowing mocking of myself and others by noting the accuracy with which I predicted - however dryly - what would follow.

A recent post referred to curiosity about what storyline would next obsess this crowd. My invitation is that people reframe the question as, "What potentially obsessive storyline could be resisted?"

My hopes & prayers would go with the latter; smart money would bet on the former.

OR in a major plot twist, he’s interviewing for Danny’s job.

Like when Michael was interviewing for Jan’s job on The Office.

He never had to declare for the draft, he's automatically eligible

He has until 30 days before the draft to withdraw his name. That's about May 27th

Take all the time you need Alex, as a whole, we got your back

We're really good without him, better with him. Dan has more than enough for his 7 or 8 man rotation

Are you sure about that? Why is he automatically eligible? Because he's graduating? He has only played 3 years so he has another year of eligibility and would be an early entrant. I thought early entrants had to declare for the draft?
I thought so too until I just looked. It's a bit unclear but the NBA rule is you're automatically eligible after you complete your 4th year of eligibility, which he has technically done since he was on campus for the spring semester in 2022

The NBA early entrant withdrawal date is June 15 at 5:00.

The NCAA has a separate date. If you want to return to college the withdrawal date is May 28.

That isn't true. He still had to declare his intention by April 26th.

"Graduate college basketball players are automatically eligible for the NBA draft. However, if they have not yet exhausted their college eligibility, they must declare their intention to enter the draft by April 26th of the draft year. This deadline is referred to as the "Early Entry Deadline"."

But he wasn't eligible to play that semester since he redshirted.

Anything to keep the beach ball aloft without it hitting the ground before the second set begins after what seems like an interminable delay.

The natives are restless, but ooooh...bright colors.

I'm honestly not sure how that works since he was a midseason reclass redshirt. He has remaining college eligibility (article A), which is one test if he is auto entered into the draft. "His original class" might be graduating (article B), if you treat that as his redshirt half year, but it was a half year and he never played. His original class would technically be on track graduating in December, which is still in this calendar year.

So yeah maybe he's auto qualify based on B?

He was eligible to play, he chose to redshirt. But I do think he still had to declare as an early entrant, the rule is just unclear

I read the current situation different. There is no way JRoss agreed come back to be the 5th man in the 4/5 rotation. I think most players of JStew's profile would not sign up for a 3rd year of being AK's caddie. Only way both of them are back is that there is a clear path to PT. I would think their advisors would require 90-100% certainty that AK is going pro.

If AK gets negative forecast from NBA Scouts on his potential options & the earnings from NIL are significantly better than G-League route - then he has the option to come back.

It's not defined in the CBA how a midyear enrollee counts for academic class purposes, but I guess it is generally assumed that midyear enrollees are treated in the cohort that started the previous fall, so yeah I think he would be automatically enrolled if he didn't withdraw.

His NIL will be long spent by June 15! If he withdraws in June, he won’t be getting much $

Uh, no. Who is playing his position with his rebounds, toughness and 3 point threat?
Oh yes Alex, we do have your back and wish you the best in your basketball career AND we’d love to have you in our #4 slot…BUT…
We need to have a quality proven player that can definitely give the team most of what you gave us if you leave in case our freshman are not up to it, and…that pool of portal talent shrinks every day. In 30 days that proven player may not be available.
In fact, name a high quality 4 who is sitting out there waiting on Alex to decide.

There’s a pretty clear path for a guy like Stewart to get PT with Alex on the roster, those decisions were made with the idea that Alex could be coming back. There’s no feedback Alex needs at this point, his draft stock hasn’t dramatically changed in the past 2 years really. He’s been in that 35-50s range since last year and is there again. He would make more coming back to UConn than he would going pro next season. It’s pretty likely he’d play on a two way next season & we’ve seen how hard it can be to break through on those, just look at Sanogo & Newton.

Alex might just be done with school and ready to try the pro route. Totally get it if that’s where he’s at, just going to be a tough road. Honestly think it’s a good idea to come back and play one more year but again, he might just be ready to move on to the next chapter. If that’s where he’s at, then go and chase the dream, can’t be mad at that.

Well we now have 3-10 hours of waiting for a potentially definitive announcement. Which way do you freaks see this going? Personally I think (based off of nothing) he’s staying just because it doesn’t feel like we’ve scrambled to any strong offers to PF transfers yesterday/today and if Alex did “declare” anything to the NBA I feel like it may have been leaked by someone over the weekend.

Apparently he accidentally leaked his decision to "some guy Esquire" before he told the staff.
