Karaban still weighing decision whether to return or go pro

He declared or he didn’t? If he declared we should expect some pretty quick movement on his replacement, right?
The lack of communication about a decision either way suggests to me he declared but is still negotiating NIL. That’s his leverage.

At some point Dan Hurley needs to say take it or leave it so we aren’t caught without a legit 4. This can’t drag out like last year

Maybe Alex needs to get a Master's in Deadlines.
Well, to be fair that was only a deadline to declare for the draft, which Alex did not need to do given that he is graduating. Basically, The Boneyard adopted that deadline as the dropdead date, but in truth, it is not and never was. The real dropdead date is the withdrawal date which I think is in the end of June.

If I understand correctly AK could put his name in and still withdraw by June 15th, right? I assume this is what he did but just with no announcement.

Announcement isn’t really needed until June 15th - because he still has options. The announcing your declaration to enter the draft is therefore kind of meaningless, right?

I don't think his decision changes much with respect to the portal even if he waits until after the combine again. We still need a bench center 5/4 and have not been publicly linked to anyone. Baba Miller is really the only player who seems available and good enough to help at Karaban's position. Unless Miller has a timeline where he can't wait for late May, there really isn't much affect other than we just want to know as fans.

The thing is that the way he had been talking was as though he didn't want to prolong it again past this deadline. So everyone was expecting some kind of finality.

Did he put his name in though? That itself is news and the media will find out soon if so.

Concur, AK’s leverage is with UConn, but that means that if the parties are still negotiating, then there is likely a path to him staying. What would be the purpose of ongoing NIL negotiations as a second rounder? It’s not as though continuing to negotiate with UConn would give him any leverage with NBA teams.

He still has eligibility tho, so doesn’t he still have to declare? If he doesn’t technically need to declare, then he just needs to make a decision and move forward. We’re not waiting until June to see what he decides. Make a decision and live with it. We’ve got championship aspirations, need to know how to move forward with this roster.

I read somewhere that the official early entry list is to be released next week. So, in theory, this could go on another week unless someone in-the-know reports on the decision.

I have a feeling he's leaving for the NBA. If he was staying, it would've been easy to put out a post like he did last year. If he's leaving, he's probably struggling with the good-bye statement he wants to make about how much being at UConn has meant to him. Alex is a perfectionist and would want to get that right.

I hope I'm wrong.

That is an interesting take but I am not so sure on this one. Alex would need to draft a thoughtful post for either decision. A simple “I’m Back” might not do it 2 years in a row.

Struggling with a good bye statement? Really? He could declare, then take weeks to put out a statement.

I think this point was made earlier in the thread but NIL is screwing everything up. The kid’s dream is to play in the NBA but the short term financial trade off of a potential 2 way NBA contract in comparison to the NIL money is probably making him think twice. Go live your dream and get yourself a financial planner who helps you invest what you save and in the long run you will make the money back.

If he did put his name in, you wish he would have done it before the portal closed last Tuesday. That way a better player might have been drawn in to come to UConn. If he is gone, I think it’s fair for fans to be pretty frustrated

It seems more likely that he is struggling with the idea of if he can stick in the league or not. He is a good college player, an important piece for two championship teams. There aren't a lot of young people who can say that. But that league can be unforgiving, and he is probably getting mixed feedback at best. I would imagine that the finality of this decision, plus whatever NIL money is there for him vs the dream of being an NBA player is an insanely tough choice.

Hurley needed to draw a line with him as to not strangle the team. But he didn’t, gave him all the time he wanted.
AK totally jerked off the team. Grow balls make a decision.

Now BOTH of them really screwed the pooch..
Really hurts what next years team will be.. Sorry Stewart and Ross with a freshman for forwards. Bubble city

As much as I don’t like the direction NIL is going, we’re not exactly the fan base that gets to cry over it. Without Newton in 2022-23, I think we’re short of a title. And, 23-24 certainly might have been good eough to pull off a title without Spencer, I can’t say that with confidence. Certainly wouldn’t be possible without Newton and Spencer.

Also - without the portal, I’m not sure Hurley wouldn’t have been fired. How insane does that sound?

I saw that Mark Zanetto said Karaban entered the draft without agent, giving him until June 15 to return.

If that is true we need to go get a replacement asap. Not wait for June 16.

Or as I mentioned earlier, I’d this a negotiating ploy to get more NIL. This could actually be he biggest payday playing hoops and he could be trying to maximize it and this just provides a bit more time

Mark has had a bad run recently. Said Tarris was transferring, Solo Ball was going to test the NBA waters & decent chance of not returning, other info wrong. He might be right here, but I wouldn’t trust anything he says at this point.
Zanetto is just a fan spewing his opinions from "unnamed sources". Wrong more than he is right!

A few on this board need to add a hobby, a significant other, something to occupy themselves a little for no reason other than their own sanity.

AK has earned the privilege of taking as much time as he believes he needs.

Hurley is not sitting around, hoping that a suitable alternative materializes if AK does decide to leave.

Things will progress when they progress, b!tch!ng and moaning won't expedite that.
