Just thinking about our offense when Stewie and Steph are on the court together....there seems to be total confusion. No direction. Do you think they understand what offense they are running? Do you think the coaching could be better? Stewie seems to play better when Steph is resting. Just thinkin'
 
All I know is there will be two open spots next year in the starting lineup. One should go to Morgan Tuck and the other could go to either Kiah Stokes, Brianna Banks, or Moriah Jefferson. At this point Stewart should come off the bench....She needs out of her funk and badly
 
Stewie is a gifted jazz musician in her first year at Julliard...given a little time and patience, both will benefit immensely...and both should fare well in New Orleans... ;)

Stewie and Steph have never been on the court together.

When one player does not understand the priciples of the offense or defense and doesn't know their position and responsibilities within the set, play and options what you end up with is what we are seeing. Defensively someone misses a rotation and the result is an easy basket. Offensively the play clogs up and slows down because two players end up in the same position and it isn't clear who is screening for whom. Lanes become clogged because multiple players are trying to cut and all are dragging their defenders into traffic. Eventually, everyone ends up standing around because no one is sure who is going to do what and when and they all resort to watching to get a clue to what is next instead of seeing and acting instinctively and promptly.

Ummmm.....I think there is a little basketball yet to be played this year, some summer activities, and some fall practicies before we project starting lineups for next season.

Is Stewart in a crappy stretch? Yep. Is she still one of the two most talented players on the squad? IMO, yes. The beauty of that match talent and athleticism is that the turnaround from crappy games to great performances doesn't have to take that long.

Lots of water still to flow under the bridge before we know next season's starters. (And the 3,942,695 threads that will be generated on the BY on the subject.)

I would like to see Breanna get alot of time in the next two games. Seton Hall and Pitt. I would like to see Geno leave her in the game and see if she can work her way out of the mess shes in. Her outside shot is off. Her rebounding has been pretty good as has her hustle. She thinking way to much which happens when your trying to live up to other peoples expectations, and when your trying to adapt to the fine tuneing the coaches are working with you on.
 
I find it comical/sad that I was just defending Morgan Tuck a month ago from certain fans that said that she was a bust and that her ACL tears would limit her from ever being productive for the team. Now we have Stewie under the microscope and were hearing the same kind of doubts. I'll continue to believe in both of them, as I think they are going to be huge for us during tournament time and for years to come.

Anybody who thinks that Stewie is coming off the bench next year...doesn't understand how this game is played. She will start next year...as will Stefanie, KML, Bria and Moriah, Tuck will be first off the bench, Kiah will play more minutes but not extensively so. Banks should be back after the first of the year and unfortunately will come off the bench and will deal with getting her sea legs under her as the season progresses towards the post season... Unfortunately, this injury will delay Brianna Banks from becoming the player she is destined to be until her senior year. Saniya will use her freshmen year to adjust to the college game and we will see some very interesting moments from her...where she will score two or three baskets but don't look for her to crack the starting line-up. Kelly, Doty and Buck will be gone...but my suspicion is that we will really learn how good Kelly is when her eligibility has run out. We will be short-handed next year...it is extremely important that all our players stay healthy. If one of our starters gets injured the margin of error is going to be very tight...additionally, if we get hit hard with the flu during the flu season next year...it could cost us a game or two.
 
Just thinking that Stewie may be a little burned out as well as shell shocked. IIRC (and someone will tell me if I am wrong), she has played USA BB every summer for the last several years, including 2 teams last summer - U18 and U19 (where she was the youngest player). Then she comes to UConn.

For the first time in forever, she is not always the go- to guy. She is not the biggest kid on the floor. She is not always the tallest/most talented kid on the floor. These things take adustments, mentally and physically.

Throw in living away from home, academics, and physically demanding practices that may be harder than many games, well, you have to feel for the kid.

Give her a summer away from USA BB, more weight training, better diet, and more practice with just the team ballin' - well, she will probably make a junp like KML did from Freshman to Suphomore year. Hoping so, anyway.

Her future is bright. We all need patience with her, as she does with herself.
 
I am reminded of this great little piece in the NYT on Feb. 2 written by a writer who turned up at the Iowa Writers' Workshop, the no. 1 program in the country, and immediately lost it. He tried, and tried, and tried, but the muse was gone. Then he stopped overthinking, starting enjoying life again, and slowly he got it back. So will she. I wish I could send her that article. As a Syracusan born and bred, I'm hurting for her.
 
I'm going to agree with Tony here. Maybe the Baylor game wasn't the right time to do it, but Stewart just needs to work things out on the court herself, and she needs the opportunity to do so. One can't possibly know what's going on inside her head but there's no doubt the talent is there. It will re-emerge eventually. In the meantime, I would guess that self-confidence is the main issue. It's not my place to criticize a great coach like Geno and I don't intend to do so here, but it used to drive me nuts how Calhoun on the men's side would yank a player immediately if he did something wrong. I'm not sure what the point was. Punishment? Really? Chances are that player was intelligent enough to know he made a mistake and would have self-monitored his actions going forward, making corrections as necessary, if given the opportunity. Once you become afraid of making a mistake you're done, and immediately yanking a player reinforces that fear unless he or she has the strong emotional make-up necessary to cope with it. Not every player does. I say give her as much playing time as she needs to work things out, and she will. Early in the season I thought she'd be a superstar. Well, somewhere deep inside, that superstar is still there. One more thing, I pray to God she doesn't read this board and take the negative comments directed her way to heart.
 
Plus, we don't know what Geno said to her before she went in. Maybe he specifically told her to do something that she failed to do. I coach a girls' basketball team, and let me tell you, that is SUPER frustrating. Especially if it's one little thing, like "You're playing right wing" or "Guard number 11" or "Don't throw it to the other team".

Stewie was the team in HS. At Uconn she is fingers on a hand- each one has a specific function in order for the hand to work properly. She is learning , but when your whole life you were adored and cajoled and praised, it's a little disconcerting when coach says NO do it my way. It will take time but at Uconn you can't afford to be a work-in-progress when your mates are playing at higher level. Talent does not always transfer into success at Uconn.

Remember, Breanna came to UCONN to learn...she's the opposite of a head case...

Certainly, if she makes that shot, she becomes Michael Jordan '82. Which leads me to ponder the possible consequences of Jordan missing that shot.

I think the entire game was the start of her funk. You leave out the 5-17 shooting, including 0-4 on 3's and 0-1 at the line (missed front end of a 1-and-1), and several missed layups. Four of those misses came in the last 2 minutes, 2 when we were up by 1, 2 when we were down by 1.

Her 4 turnovers were a steal by Diggins leading to a foul and made free throws, a steal by Diggins leading to a putback layup, an offensive foul with a chance to stretch the lead to 5 at the under-8 timeout (though I recall thinking this was a terrible call), and a turnover leading to a game-tying layup with 3 minutes to go.

I don't want to pin the loss on any one player, but each of those bad plays had huge momentum implications, and suggest an overall skittishness in big games which we've seen twice more now since then.

Agree. She's got to find the joy in the game again. Don't worry about not making a mistake, just go and play the game. It would do wonders for her.
