They are already paying. All cadets, whether athletes or not, receive a full scholarship plus a monthly stipend.

Different animal - they're actually paid for being midshipmen or cadets.

They're paid about $900 a month, but all but about $100 is paid in the form of services such as laundry, books, uniforms, etc. Federal and state taxes are withheld and, of course, they owe five years of military service after graduation.

It's not cost of attendance and some of it duplicates what is already provided gratis to a current scholarship athlete.

Not so different. They get an additional payment above and beyond their scholarship that generally covers the cost of attendance. My nephew essentially got out of West Point with a slight positive balance. His plebe roommate, a great kid from a very poor southern family, actually sent some money home (but to do so he had to watch his pennies and spend holidays with my brother's family because he couldn't afford to fly home). The reason they are being given this great free education is, of course, the multi-year commitment they make to the military during which, you can be sure, we taxpayers get a great return on our investment. Similarly, the reason the SEC thinks throwing a few bucks at football players makes sense is that they too get all of their money back and far more.

Wasn't June Jones a Houston Gambler in the USFL?

That might be where he came into idiocy.
