Johnson out indefinitely

If Sampson is out "indefinitely" it may be Richie Springs that fills up the minutes. He could be a more than an acceptable substitute in the interim. We are very deep.

Aren't all injured players out "indefinitely" until they actually return?

Yes, they certainly are indefinitely out until such time as their return for certain. The certitude of uncertainty.

Wow. Given this, it's even more impressive that you're a bad take machine on this board.

I promise the drop off to Richie is close to zero. All we need out of that spot is defense and rebounding.
I wholeheartedly disagree. Johnson can do things with his length and athleticism that Richie cannot do, and will be highly valuable against better competition… particularly Creighton. Don’t get me wrong, I like Richie. But let’s not kid ourselves and get overexcited after a game against BU to try and soften the blow of losing Johnson.

Sure Johnson has a higher ceiling and flashes some great potential. He also fouls a lot, and is out of position most of the time defensively. Again the difference in this athleticism and length over the 15 mins he will play this year is really not a lot. I promise.

I don't know man. Johnson started for a reason. Richie didn't play in the first game until garbage time for a reason. I think Springs will be a fine backup, but I've gotta trust the staff if they believe that Johnson was starting material and Richie was out of the rotation until we needed another PF.

From what I've seen you are right... Johnson plays defense with his hands, has basically 0 offensive skillset, and didn't seem to get the team concept. He's also played a total of 16 minutes of basketball this year. Pretty tough to judge his skillset based on that.

I, personally have been eager to see what Samson can actually do on the court and all the videos we watched this summer indicated that he had vastly improved in all facets of his game. So yes, I think this is a loss. Losing a starter is losing a starter!

At the end of the day we are currently without 3 starters, and this is a good time to see what we have on this "deep bench". Richie looked the part on Friday, hopefully he can look the part a few more times until we are at 100%.

I think we all recognize he was only going to be a starter for a game or two though. I'm rooting for the kid and really like his upside but I see 8 players on the team where if they were injured it would be more concerning.

There’s really no way of saying that at all. Especially considering Dan is usually dug in on his starters once he makes that decision.

Yes Samson has quite a bit to work on, and I have faith he’ll work out those kinks with more playing time. He is barely a sophomore. The two flaws you mentioned are quite coachable… and the staff have proved they can coach that up very well (Whaley). You can’t coach length and athleticism.

I promise you there is a reason a younger Samson was thrust into the starting lineup, and that there’s a reason Richie barely sees a lick of playing time when we are at full strength. It’s pretty evident the drop off between the two players. It seems Hurley and the staff agree.

And I promise you by the end of the season (if the two players stay healthy), the difference between the two players will be even more.

Some of you are underestimating Johnson on a small sample size. He was and still is an important piece. I just would like to see what he really is with consistent court time. Hoping to see a healthy Samson soon.
Agreed, but Karaban's play fits well with Sanogo. He looks good at the 4 as of now

He played 29 minutes because he was healthy and great out there, Samson didn't look so good.
But you see how that contradicts your point about his health keeping him from starting.

Irrespective of Samson's upside.. Because of his injury and its undefined timeline. If I'm AK.. Balls to the wall and try to establish myself as Dan Hurley's solution at the 4 as a starter.

If springs ends up carving out a meaningful role we will have two of the best individual player stories back to back with him and pork chop

Sometimes I feel like indefinitely can mean whatever you want it to mean.
It can. Taken literally it means "there is no time frame for return." Such a construct is consistent with both of the following:
1. There is a timeframe, but the organization or individual declines to disclose it.
2. There is no timeframe at the time of the announcement, but a decision will follow and 'indefinitely' can be either short or long once that decision is reached.

Is his absence really a loss? I did not see much of anything in his game on Monday, other than long arms...I thought he looked uncomfortable and a bit lost on defense... To me he seemed stunned by the speed of the game. That being said, I wish him a speedy recovery from whatever the ailment is in his foot.
Other than just not wanting a kid to be injured, you want more bodies, not less. I think this kid has a chance to develop into a very nice player for this team, but foot injuries of any sort always scare me with basketball players.

But you see how that contradicts your point about his health keeping him from starting.
Hurley literally talked for a month straight about Karaban being the leader to start at the 4, then Karaban was hurt for 2 weeks and didn't practice and suddenly Samson Johnson got the start. It's not hard to connect the dots here

Can you source this? Because I must have missed this

He was a little more direct on Big East media day and said there's a real chance Karaban starts at the 4. But also just a lot of subtle comments like the one in this article when he was talking about the roster that made Karaban appear to have the edge at the 4. Mostly the parts in bold about pulling Samson quickly if Karaban was healthy, and about loving the 4 spot so wanting to find minutes for Samson at the 5 that made it seem to me that Karaban had the edge pre-injury

On Samson Johnson and Alex Karaban at the four spot

“I got some good advice to stop talking about the NBA and my players. I’m not going to prognosticate that way, but Samson has a high ceiling. Alex being hurt helped him because he was able to play through mistakes in the first scrimmage, where I might have pulled him quick. It was good for him to process things quicker on the court. Once he can do that, he can unleash his talent. He as much physical ability as anyone I’ve had here.”

I love the four spot right now. We’ll experiment maybe with playing Samson and Alex together with Samson at center, because those two guys make a real difference from an offensive standpoint. Samson brings different things to both backboards, with his athleticism, slashing, and above the rim play. Our fours are young but they’re talented.”
