Magic - just checked and I just am not really buying this. I am ignoring the first two games because one was UofH and the next was messed up by KML going down at the start of the second half.
1. So for the next eight games down to 7 scholarship players and in one game down to six when Kiah was unavailable Chong averaged 23.75 minutes and Banks 23.25. (also included in this stretch were BU, Monmouth, SBU, and UC-Davis a stretch of 4 out of 5 games that were probably the weakest on the schedule.)
Skip Duke with the return of KML and Tuck -
2. Next six games with KML and Tuck back taking some of the starter/bench minutes - Chong 18 minutes and Banks 17.3
3. Skip Baylor - only testing game and one in which starters all played over 32 minutes.
4. Next four games - Chong misses one, but averages 16.6. Banks misses basically 2 and is in foul trouble as she comes back in the third so pretty meaningless.
So ... a couple of things - with seven players both Banks and Chong got significantly more minutes but what would you expect and Banks was starting most of those games.
With the return of KML and Tuck they both averaged 17-18 minutes per game until Baylor - basically solid time for bench players especially when that time is being split amongst 4 players.
Since Baylor, Banks has been out of it and Chong missed one game. The only game that really stands out is the Rutgers game where Chong got 10 minutes and Banks got 8. In that game Stewart and Hartley both got in a groove, and Jefferson had a monster game with 13 points, 8 assists, 4 rebounds, 3 Steals, and zero turnovers. I think that was a game where Geno just wanted to ride the starters as it is the only game besides Baylor where all the starters average 32-33 minutes and it was sort of a break out game for all but KML. The other two games Chong has played since Baylor are 23 and 17 minute efforts for an average of 20.
With Morgan now gone for the season, I would not be surprised to see Banks and Chong getting a little more time, but with only 7 games in Feb I think Geno will also want to keep Hartley and Moriah in their current zone and continue to work KML so don't see them averaging above 19-20 minutes and maybe still in the 17-18 range. That really is sufficient for them to improve and it really doesn't matter what the score is when they are playing - the coaches don't coach to the score until the very end and generally the players don't either.
