I can't find anywhere (other than on here) that says "he found a wallet" - did I miss it?

Of course not. It doesn't exist. Tomorrow morning there will be a post speculating that UConn can't be invited to the Big 10 because of the negative
publicity.

I agree Jim...Metsfan 2323 care to explain your stupid comment? Has to be the most idiotic comment I have ever seen n this board! I can't wait to see this explanation!

It was actually meant to defend the kid by reminding that even adults do dumb things. It was in reference to the last theft discussion that took place on this board just a few weeks ago and involved a fireman father of a player who was arrested on campus for theft, I guess you missed it. I apologize that it bothered you so much, it was an off the cuff mistake.

First off my post was backing up what Jimdish255 and Jarhead_1775 called you on...so don't just appologize to me. I saw the thread you are talking about...I chose to not participate in it. Why...every man has his day in court. He has been suspended without pay by the city of New London. Outside of being a firefighter, police officer or ranking (head or assistant) government finance official tell me one other job that conduct like that outside the work place gets you suspended from your lively hood without pay? Sometimes people make bad decisions in life...and there are consequences for those decisions. Gov't officials seem to be held to a higher standard especially when you are a firefighter, police officer, teacher. So you realize if you are in one of those professions that you need to keep it above the line integrity wise. I just find it funny how people bring those professions into discussions like this or into someones personal off duty conduct yet slough off what a guy like Bernie Madoff does and not describe every broker, hedge fund or money manager with the same broad brush.

Without having read any of the facts, and assuming it wasn't a teammate's wallet, my guess is that he'll burn his Accelerated Rehabilitation in Rockville (and probably see a few UConn classmates in court that day) and miss 1-2 games. This is probably one of those "what the hell were you thinking?" type of things that many college kids do, inexplicably.

Remember, Andre Dixon bumped heads with the law a couple of times but scored the winning TD against Notre Dame and had six times as many rushing yards as C.J. Spiller against South Carolina. Unless this is a part of a pattern, it isn't a career-ender, but his margin for error just narrowed significantly.

Agreed. Besides cannot afford to lose depth at the running back position.

If that was a teammate's wallet I doubt this would be in the press and I would imagine Mr. Williams would be one battered pup and probably off the team.

I'm not excusing the comment, just offering a different perspective.

The firefighter has a union, apparently his union contract allows him to be suspended for this behavior. If he doesn't like that, he doesn't have to be a firefighter.

Also, fair or not, public employees are held to a higher standard because the public is paying their salaries. If we don't like the behavior of employees at a company, we can spend our money at their competition. We don't have that choice when it comes to public employees. If we don't like the board of ed/school system in the town we live in we can send our kids to private/parochial schools, but we're still paying for those teachers/administrators, etc.

To me this is being handled exactly as it should be. He is out for a while. it isn't a horrific crime, but it also isn't taking a candy bar without paying either. And a lot depends on where he got the wallet. If it turns out that he lifted it from a teammate, I'm not sure how he ever comes back. Something bothers me, too about using the credit card. Not sure why, but to me that puts it into a different dimension. You can make a case, if only to yourself, that ultimately he planned to return the cash. Not so much with a credit card...

More information is needed, and I agree it's being handled correctly so far, but I think he should get at least a one game suspension based on his poor decision.

(And McCombs should have gotten 3 games, IMO).

The kid was arrested for a crime, is facing legal action resulting from it, and has been suspended indefinitely pending further review.

That's good enough for me.

once stole a cheeseburger from 7-11 while i was inebriated ... if i was on the football team i would have been suspended ... but because i had no talent i could maintain my anonymity ...

Yes, but alumni like us weren't funding your education.

You know what FDNY - when people get into positions of power and/or prestige, it's amazing how people in the media will buy into and even build up the mythology of that person's image. This happens for CEOs but also for public servants, at least ones with outsize personalities, in both parties. The media do it for Obama and Romney, Bill Gates and Donald Trump, and they do it for the fraudsters like Madoff, Ken Lay, Jeff Skillings, Angelo Mozillo, John Thain etc during the boom times... and then pretend they weren't part of the myth building when the bubble bursts. It's like those CEOs and celebrity politicians are the new royalty. If a regular person shoplifts, they have to go to court, maybe lose their job. If the new royals knowingly sell worthless derivatives, they get a golden parachute and maaaaaybe a slap on the wrist.

better stop the rant here.

I get what you are saying I have been in the fire service since 1991. When you have a contract you know what the consequences are if you violate it...in the FDNY we have a zero tolerance policy against substance abuse...we are radomly tested (sample sealed in two jars..and if we test positive the 2nd sample is tested..if that is positive you are terminated if you don't resign)..it is in our contract and not negotiated..rule is there you know what the consequences are if you violate the rule. However he meant his comment it just didn't come across that way when he posted it. This is my last reply on this subject in this thread, it has gone WAY off topic. Back to the OP...sorry for causing the detour!

For what its worth (nothing), I would love to see the crooks at Goldman, AIG, Bank of America, Countrywide etc, etc put in jail and the key thrown away, but do you seriously not think that these people/companies/groups and the politicians they own in both parties don't get slammed on internet message boards? They get crucified daily and they deserve it.

BTW I also think all shoplifters should get arrested, I don't care what profession they are in, so at least I am consistent.

I didn't say anything about messageboards, I was talking about media (the dreaded MSM which includes the dreaded NY Times, Washington Post, CNN/NBC but also Fox and CNBC and right-leaning papers) sucking up to the crooks and cheerleading the bubble during boom times. When the housing bubble burst, there were a few hearing where the crooks tried to pass the buck or no-comment their way out, and many of the CNBC cheerleaders were right there defending them.

BTW I also think all shoplifters should get arrested, I don't care what profession they are in, so at least I am consistent.
Agreed. Same rules should apply no matter what station you are in. This is what the founding fathers had in mind, they wouldn't be thrilled with congress being run by banks.

Back in the day there was a construction job going on across from our dorm, we all needed shelves so we borrowed a number of cement blocks to hold up boards. Joe should not be kicked off team over this. Young people do careless and stupid things. If it was a teammates wallet that raises other issues that will be hard to overcome. Lack of common sense the first among them.

I'm sorry we all do stupid things but liberating some cement blocks.... taking some 4 x 4's is not the same thing as taking a wallet that was not his, using the money and buying something on the credit card. Should he come back sure... but lets not make comparisons to our own lives that are not equal. I took a pint glass from Ted's one night but I sure don't think that is the same as using someone else's identity.

If the allegation is true, Joe not only did something wrong, he did something dumb.

.-.
I hope we didn't bury this young man, because Huggy Bear says "it wasn't him"

Different then taking a wallet and fraudulently using a credit card, in my opinion.

Sure, but to me it was hardly something that should warrant anything major in the way of punishment. A couple game suspension, double secret probation, etc would be sufficient. This was a poor decision by an 18 year old college student. NBD.

Not quite 18. He'll be 20 in a couple weeks. Not a kid.

Having read above, i would say its likely that if theres nothing else, he will probably be back in a few weeks.

But thats a big IF

On seeing the headline, my first reaction was, "I hope it's not true." My second was, "please don't be Joe Williams." I'm now on, "I hope it's a misunderstanding."

Exactly! A like situation never happened to me during my time as a, so called, athlete. In the Army, I had to deal with one case where a barracks thief was caught red-handed. Without going into detail, my Platoon Sergeant and the Company First Sergeant talked me into allowing them to handle the situation using something the old-timers called "NCO justice." NCO Justice was later explained to me as a less formal, but more effective punishment, than alternative forms defined in the "UCMJ."

Not a kid I guess, but still a young dumb college student. I can get past that (assuming there is a punishment, and appropriate response by Joe Williams). My understanding is that it was from a found wallet, so it isn't like he actively took it from someone. Not trying to justify it, but one scenario is a dumb mistake, the other puts people in danger.

College kids do all sorts of idiotic stuff.

Yeah they do. So did I. We can debate whether this particular offense by Joe Williams deserves a more or less severe punishment (and for sure there are degrees of criminal behavior) but it's a much broader issue than merely the football team. It was late last night when I saw the thread and I'd spent the day deep in central Kentucky on business in an office that was an homage to the Wildcats, so I may have been a bit woozy and over the top!

#UConn's Paul Pasqualoni chose his words carefully regarding status of suspended RB Joe Williams
http://runwayramblings.blogspot.com/2013/08/pasqualoni-doesnt-say-much-on-joe.html

>>Pasqualoni doesn't say much on Joe Williams' status

UConn football coach Paul Pasqualoni chose his words carefully when it came to the possible reinstatement of sophomore tailback Joe Williams after Tuesday's practice.

"I don't know we'll have to wait and see what the final results are," Pasqualoni said. "That's all I can say; I can't comment. We'll go through the process and see."

Williams was arrested on Friday and charged with sixth degree larceny. On Monday UConn announced it was suspending Williams indefinitely.<<

Was there anything on the 2011 Final Four? How about the second round in 2006?
