Fireman comment seems random... Context?

A couple of weeks ago a walk-ons dad, who is a fireman and on disability, was accused and charged with taking gear from the co-op at Uconn.

I'm not gonna say this isn't a big deal... It is... But on the scale of horribleness... Isn't this on the lower end of the scale? I hope the punishment is fitting, I hope it was a life lesson... And I hope he sees the field sooner rather than later.

A lot depends on how he got the wallet.

Finding a dropped wallet and then being stupid isn't as bad as going out of your way to steal a wallet. Stealing another man's wallet is pretty despicable and should probably get him kicked off the team.

Gotta agree with you there. Having thieves on a team can destroy chemistry. It cuts to the core of trust and watching each others backs.

Everyone deserves a second chance. Even the Bonyarders who walk on water.

It is not a serious crime and he, like anyone else, will go through the courts. After he gets accelerated rehabilitation, if it's his first offense, it will be dropped after one year.

If he doesn't get booted from school or the team (I don't think he should be booted) I'm pretty sure his teammates will take care of the rest of his punishment.

If he was/is a bad egg my guess is he will be gone from the team. If he's a good guy who got stupid I think he'll get another chance.

If it was a teammate's wallet I don't know how he survives and stays on the team.

The players will have some say in it I'm sure.

.-.
Per Des article:

"He is charged with taking a credit card and $60 cash from an individual's wallet, according to the police report. The report says he used the credit card to purchase an item valued at $124.90, which was delivered to his address in Pennsylvania. According to the police report, the theft took place in April and the warrant for Williams' arrested was issued on Aug. 1."

He was arrested (or turned himself in) on the 9th.

For what it's worth, the term theft could be applied to taking the cash from the wallet or for using the credit card illegally. It doesn't necessarily mean that the wallet was not found but obviously that is giving the benefit of the doubt.

As someone who in their younger years was charged with 6th degree larceny (along with conspiracy and 3rd degree criminal mischief), I would hate to see something as stupid as this ruin a young kids life. Obviously I'm very glad my stupid actions when I was 19 didn't have a lasting impact.

I hope the coaching staff / university are waiting to get all the facts and then make an informed decision on the young man's future.

And some of the rest of us never got caught.

once stole a cheeseburger from 7-11 while i was inebriated ... if i was on the football team i would have been suspended ... but because i had no talent i could maintain my anonymity ...

My UConn roommate and I built our two story dorm room in Wright A from 4x4s liberated from a large number stop signs around the UConn campus one fuzzy evening in 1975. And we turned out ok, at least it seems that way to us, because we came to our senses later. BTW, I'm pretty sure that was because the women we met and married wouldn't have gone for that anymore. Anyway, I don't know Joe's story or background but, I say if his teammates and coaches are willing to give him a second chance, so am I.

Maybe someday he can be a fireman

You're getting on my nerves. Exactly what is it that you do that's so much better? And don't bother explaining to me what you were referring to I read the thread.. Too many guys have lost lives and limbs to care.

Hope Joe learns a lesson and doesn't give up on himself.

I agree Jim...Metsfan 2323 care to explain your stupid comment? Has to be the most idiotic comment I have ever seen n this board! I can't wait to see this explanation!

Love how some here want the kid booted for 6th degree larceny yet many here wanted Dyer on this team. Not gonna waste time cross referencing if these people wanted Dyer and want Williams gone but this is such a non-issue. The kid should be suspended for a few games and then given the chance to come back. I believe in second chances....I don't believe in third and beyond....

I would bet at some point before Williams was arrested Campus Police kept P in the loop about the investigation. The fact that he was with the team at the start of camp may give us some insight about where he stands with P. It may also explain why he wasn't #2 behind McCoombs. I think if he makes restitution and has to live off campus for a semester or 2..and is given a Zero Tolerence policy to abide by why he can't stay on thr team. I was one who thought Dyer may have been a good fit here with a Zero Tolerence policy.

Without having read any of the facts, and assuming it wasn't a teammate's wallet, my guess is that he'll burn his Accelerated Rehabilitation in Rockville (and probably see a few UConn classmates in court that day) and miss 1-2 games. This is probably one of those "what the hell were you thinking?" type of things that many college kids do, inexplicably.

Remember, Andre Dixon bumped heads with the law a couple of times but scored the winning TD against Notre Dame and had six times as many rushing yards as C.J. Spiller against South Carolina. Unless this is a part of a pattern, it isn't a career-ender, but his margin for error just narrowed significantly.

Back in the day there was a construction job going on across from our dorm, we all needed shelves so we borrowed a number of cement blocks to hold up boards. Joe should not be kicked off team over this. Young people do careless and stupid things. If it was a teammates wallet that raises other issues that will be hard to overcome. Lack of common sense the first among them.

Keep the in the cesspool. Totally OT and lame.

A student is suspended for one event and a teacher has 5 or 6 events and might get suspended is related.

It's called perspective.

Sorry but there's no way he can stay on the team if he did this as described. The fact that he thought he would get away with it and mailed it to his house is troubling enough. These kids are given a tremendous opportunity and the privilege of playing Div 1 Football. He forfeited it. Whatever it was he bought with the stolen money must have been more important to him than playing for UConn. Love to know what it was.

Nostical generally I enjoy your posts but this post and this thread are off the rails.

College kids do all sorts of idiotic stuff. We don't even have all the details to even understand the issue - but if the charges are for taking $60 and spending $120 on a credit card the biggest crime here is the stupidity to ship something to an address.

If they were to throw Williams off the team... I can't even imagine how anyone could reconcile that against the 'suspension' that McCombs experienced. One quarter for McCombs and a death penalty for Williams.

How could anyone take the coaching staff seriously after that?

While I won't pass judgment on whether he should be dismissed or not, it does make you wonder how 140 dollar item could be worth jeopardizing your 40k, year scholarship. It just defies logic. And yes I did something very stupid at 14, that cost my mom,a,lot of money.

And I bet she didn't kick you out of the family...

Pretty much agree with this. The charges sounded a lot worse before some of the details come out. This coming from a guy who thought it was a disgrace that McCombs boarded the bus for Piscataway. If he found a wallet, took the cash, and spent $120 on the credit card......come on now. I just can't get over the stupidity in having the item shipped to his home address.

The only thing that would make it different was if he stole from a teammate. That really would change the dynamic but who am to judge.

If it turns out to be a Ruben Rivera situation that's obviously different. Of course the only place that speculation exists is here.

I can't find anywhere (other than on here) that says "he found a wallet" - did I miss it?
