My hat is off to a great journalist - Joe Nocera. He showed a lot of courage and grit when UConn had to keep their mouths zipped.

He took on the NCAA by himself and made them pay a political price too high to continue with this non-sense.

Nocera wrote a piece after the NCAA tournament in April comparing Calhoun with the Baylor kid who got suspended. He said Calhoun got off with nothing, and in fact that seeing Calhoun with the trophy made him sick to his stomach. Even if Calhoun was guilty of everything, it was way over the line and helped enforce the notion that UConn is some rogue program. Happy for the recent stuff, but that was a real problem

I will reveal this. I sent Nocera 4 e-mails with certain information and he responded to each one and aggressively pursued the information. I sent one e-mail to Jeff Jacobs - never got a response.

If the NCAA timeline of the Ryan's investigation is accurate than Nocera didn't exactly present all of the facts in his article and made it appear very one sided in his battle against the NCAA. I think the NCAA is a corrupt organization that is inconsistent with what rules they decide to enforce and who they go after, but if that stuff is true then the Boatright's aren't exactly innocent and it looks bad for Nocera to leave that out.

More likely they the NCAA doesn't comment on ongoing investigations and he didn't have any of that information.

This may be the greatest user name ever.

NYT also broke the Yale Rhodes Scholar story. CT press (especially Courant) stink.

Never let facts get in the way of a feel good story. :)
