You know who else is a plodder? Tyler Olander. But this kid is bigger, maybe he's stronger too, has more length. Maybe more effort. Who knows? Would I take a Tyler who is bigger, stronger, gives more effort? Yes.

That's my evaluation of Rakim. UConn has that player already.

I'm hoping they can get one of the other bigs 3uconn has stated we are targeting. Not to say I would be upset with Jessie if he was the big UConn were to get. I just would prefer someone more athletic.

There's a big difference though. Lubin is 4 inches shorter and is 1 or 2 years older than Govan. Govan might actually grow to 5 inches taller than Lubin. That's a big difference.

Rubin is not a center so I'm wondering why everyone is going there. If you watch the video's there is no doubt he's much more Freeman (because he's definitely not 6'8" and lucky to be 6'6") and we can use a sapce eating rebounder next to our "plodding" shot blockers LOL.......we need the Rock I tell ya!;)

he's nothing like Roy Hibbert.

I watched him at EYBL Minnesota, worst comparison ever

Yeah, not sure I'm seeing the Hibbert comparison from these videos. Hibbert was really tall and really uncoordinated as a frosh. Govan is not nearly as tall but looks like he has good hands.

If we want a Georgetown big man comparison, I'm thinking Mike Sweetney is our man.

Sweetney - nice volley selles........he was a "big" man and improved over his years.......I'll take that although the ability to find the hole for Govan is maybe a bit more advanced than both comparisons as neither could really score it early. Although not as sure about Sweetney!

I just think the offense bogs down with any of the current bigs in the line up and Rakim playing the 4. And it will be the same if UConn gets Govan and he plays alongside Govan. I see Rakim playing a TO role on the team as a back up 5.

I think we should wait on a video from 2013-2014. This video is from May 2012...

I didn't even notice that......wow he's a year more advanced than that and still has more to go? I'm guessing we'll like him more than we think.......

I just found this video from October. Its pretty obvious he can't jump worth a damn and will probably be a glutton for fouls, but getting a solid body (mind you, who is ranked 4 stars by ESPN), is a step in the right direction.

Looks like he gained some "bad weight" to top it off which is the wrong direction. I am sure they can get him in shape but can they get him to get off his feet......love his ability to find the hole though - has a knack for that!

I saw this video last week (I believe), but what I like is you can see he's playing against players his own height, some taller in this video. It's not against players 6" shorter than him. So it shows he can still play & score against other big guys with contact. Something that is needed here. :)

Reminds me of Jordan Williams.

  • Same size and shape
  • Same long (but not freakishly long) arms
  • Same slow but good footwork
  • Same good, reliable hands for P&R catches and rebounding in traffic
  • Same all-around below the rim game
Williams was a hell of a college player, a double-double machine who put up 18/11 as a sophomore before declaring for the draft. If Govan is 2/3s as good, he'll be a solid starter for whoever gets him.

Rack would play the 4 no?

Most people think that's his position. And certainly he could play the four with AB or PN at the 5. But that offense would really stagnate and be far more detrimental to the team than any gain in rebounding, imo.

My guess is he will be playing the 5 unless there is someone available in spring signing that can play the 5. From my observation of one complete game I'd rather have TO playing the 4 with PN or AB than RL playing with them. Of course Lubin's high school team has nothing that is similar to UConn's to get an idea what Lubin would do playing alongside another big. Next tallest player on his team is 6'3.

Always important when looking at big men in 10th grade: they are often still adjusting to their body and/or dealing with minor health problems, particularly Osgood-Schlatters, which comes after rapid growth spurts. I had it after sprouting from 5-2 to 6-1 in about a year and it sucked. I couldn't move fluidly at all. It finally went away, and then I was able to let my natural lack of athletic ability shine through.
