Some good news here. It's UConn, Ok State, and Texas Tech.

About UConn visit:

Me and Coach Ollie (UConn) are coming to a close on a visit date in the next two days. The reason for me not visiting yet is because I choose to go home this upcoming weekend to celebrate my 21st birthday.

Some big schools offering him late. Doesn't mention much about Texas Tech. Would think it's us versus Ok. State. Does Terrell's commitment there help us?

interesting that his sister is a top 3 2013 recruit and considered UConn before signing with North Carolina. Hopefully she has good things to say about UConn. Also, it is great to see that Kansas and Louisville offered. This kid is a legit top talent.

This guy is no joke. Here are is stats from when he was back in High School. He must of previously had grade issues because with those stats he had to be a high-major prospect coming out of High School...

senior point guard/shooting guard jeff newberry of the nationally ranked Westlake High School basketball in Atlanta , GA. Class 5A region 4. 1st team all-region selection for 2010 season. 6'2" 164lbs. 40" vert. 16.6ppg 5.8 ast 3.1 stl. 5r eb.

based on these quotes before he announced his top 3 it sounds OK State is the leader, hopefully KO can make up ground if the visit gets finalized.

When Newberry does officially announce his top three, coaches at one program won’t have to hold their breath, because they’ve already made the cut.
“Oklahoma State is in there for sure,” Newberry told WreckEm247 on Saturday. “That’s probably the only one in there for sure. The other two spots are up for grabs.”

his sister(half?) is the daughter of Delino DeShields, very fast and athletic former MLB'er.

99% of guys who end up at JUCOs have grade issues or else they would be at a 4 year school.

That's right, and Kasongo is the other recruit coming in with Lyle. Kasongo is under the radar of the recruiting services, but he has a lot of good offers.

Obviously, Marcus Smart is leaving OK State after this season, but they have highly rated Stevie Clark coming in at PG this year as the heir apparent. Add in Jared Terrell recently committed, indicating he'd like to play PG too (though that may be suspect). Is OK State a better opportunity for playing time than at UConn for the 2014-2015 season?

Why would that make for an uphill battle?

Uconn first contacted him last week, now they're in the top 3.

The hill is miniscule.

From RedRaiderSports.com:
Once he left Oxford, Miss., he hoped Oklahoma State would offer him a scholarship when he completed a year at junior college. The Cowboys didn't offer him at that time.

"I ended up going (to junior college) for another year and OSU came in and started recruiting me," Newberry said. "That's how I got involved with them."

UConn was another school that jumped into the mix late. The Huskies probably have the best basketball culture of the three schools on a year-to-year basis.

"UConn probably came in two weeks ago," the 6-foot-2 athlete said. "That's a respected program that takes a lot of commits to the next level. It's just a basketball school, the environment is a good position for me to go into and get a lot of looks."

Update from OStateIllustrated.com:

Regarding other schools in the mix, Newberry recently trimmed his list to Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, and UCONN and after unofficially visiting the Red Raiders this past weekend he is looking to set up a trip to Storrs soon to check out the Husky program.
"The UCONN visit we actually are supposed to come to an agreement [today] so that's when I'm going to figure out that date right there. I was going to try and figure out if I was going to bring Louisville and Kansas into the mix but I actually just ended up staying with the three (schools) I had," he said.

Also mentions he will be visiting OK State on Thursday and leaving Friday, so it seems like it will be a quick visit.

By affording himself that much time, he will have a thorough visit and get to know the Stillwater community quite well. I was once there for the longest 1 day week of my life.

Short visit or not, Oklahoma St. is in the driver's seat. His visit to UConn is going to have to be something special to sway him our way. Fingers crossed...
