"We've operated on Jim Calhoun and in terms of not killing him, the operation was a success. However, we're not completely sure we put all the parts back correctly, we might have 'accidentally' removed his gall bladder and one of the nurses can't seem to find her gum. Cross your fingers."

If I'm getting this right the guy had back surgery partially removing a disk, comes home and then issues a press release all within the same day? Impressive.

At first I thought his coming back for the Pitt game was blowing smoke but I'm not thinking that anymore.

edit: he's coming home tomorrow. my bad....

Surgery is viewed as successful by a doctor when it creates in the doctor a right to be paid by an insurance company.

Maybe the gum can help cushion those pesky disks that insist on pressing up against his nerves.

The doctor performed a circularincision on Jimmy.

the two-hour surgery was performed Monday morning at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York and involved removing a disc fragment that had been pressing on a spinal nerve. The surgeons then decompressed the area around the nerve.
Calhoun issued a statement thanking his doctors and those who reached out to him to offer support. The school says Calhoun's coaching status will be monitored on a day-to-day basis, and there is no timetable set for his return.

Can't wait to see him back on the sidelines. Have to believe we get a few calls our way and a few more well drawn out plays with Jimmy instead of Blaney.

Success actually does mean he survived without dying or further complication (i.e. mistake or new stuff discovered). This is good news number one. True success is that the back works better going forward. This is good news number 2 (and the best news).

I pray he has future success and for good news number 2.

I think the good news is that the pain was relieved by the removal of the disk. Although I don't know for sure, I'd guess you'd get a faster recovery from a disk removal rather than the removal of bone spurs.
