Jay Wright Retiring?

This would have been bad for the league if this happened last year, but with Sean Miller and Thad Matta joining, it lessens the blow a little bit. They're obviously not Jay Wright, but the lineup of coaches in this league is still top 2 or 3 in the country.

1) SEC
2) BE
3) Big 10
Big 12??

Hate to state the obvious, but it's UConn's job to pick up the slack.

Nova was relevant before Wright, and will be relevant after Wright, but we are not UNC. Can't just plug in any fool and contend for a championship.

I will admit the timing is not great for the BE. There were a few programs that were getting there (Final 4 level), they just need a bit more time.

That's just from a BE standpoint. From a Nova standpoint, most fans will tell you we reached points we never thought we'd see, and that's good enough for now.
Yeah, there weren’t a few programs that were getting to Final Four level. The league has struggled to get teams not named Villanova to the Sweet 16 level and it isn’t like any 1 team does it with any consistench. As to UConn, truly I think it is unlikely. We don’t have the stomach for it. UConn fans are thrilled to get to the Tournament every year. That is now what is considered a successful year by most of them. They have cut back on the recruiting footprint, and honestly, i doubt Hurley will get replaced if he just meets that standard, which kind of looks to be his ceiling anyway.

ESPN is now reporting. Still can't believe this is happening. Very happy for Wright. Happy for his family. They are still relatively young. Hopefully healthy (as others have said). I assume he and his family are healthy. They are also millionaires. I'm so envious. What a fabulous life he created for himself.

Adios stupid NCAA, stupid transfer portal, stupid student/athlete hypocrisy. Hello Hawaii, Europe, Asia and places unknown. That's what I'd be saying to myself in his shoes.

I can't blame Jay Wright. I'm retiring when I'm 58. You don't know how long you've got. If you can afford it, better too early than too late. I don't want to wait until I'm too old to enjoy the free time.

Well ... I don't know if you can compare coaching Villanova basketball to a day job tho, lol.

I expect UConn to be at that level. There's no reason they cannot be given their recruiting ability and history.

Creighton is pretty close, and Xavier was close before Mack bolted.

Doesn't take a blueblood or a football backed powerhouse to make the Final 4 these days. Look at Houston.

For the BIG EAST, I think it's unfortunate he retired before another school was able to make the Final 4. It was gonna happen.

Maybe I'd ride a motorcycle across and around the world a few times..... Like Ewan McGregor.

It's harder to get to elite 8/final four level if you don't get a high seed. And you don't get a high seed if Nova beats you all the time. Not to mention the recruiting bump from saying you're the best program in a top conference. The void will help elevate somebody, that is if Neptune doesn't keep as top dogs.

Houston has been to six Final Fours, more than UConn. They have never closed the deal. They also have a strong college football petigree with numerous ranked teams, and a Heisman Trophy winner. Their athletic accomplishments are vastly under rated on the BY.

But, but, what about the farewell tour, the ceremonies, speeches, and the ESPN specials? This is unacceptable.

Edit: FOX sports specials…

Seriously, if say Iowa or Florida State decided to poach a NEWBIE coach, do you honestly think they wouldn’t get out bid? Heck, Hurley has basically said he would leave for more money. The Creighton guy is the only one who might stay. But a few NEWBIE schools are near the top in budgets, it’s true, but overall the league ranks 4 or 5 in average budget depending how you calculate it. (4th in mean, 5th in median). Marquette, Villanova Georgetown and Providence are in the Top 20. St Johns is 35th We are right about at the league median interestingly and 41 nationally. Creighton is next and spend almost a million dollars less than UConn. Seton Hall spends $1.8 million less. But after that it drops until you get down to Butler which spends less than a number of A10 programs.

As to our conference situation, We are in an awful position, to be truthful. We are stuck in a league where we don’t belong pretending it is 1995. We are the only large public school in with a bunch of smallish, urban Catholic colleges, many of which are really commuter schools. I hope Dave is doing everything in his power to get us into a true power conference. Because the future of the NEWBIE just became much bleaker than it was before this announcement. I am not advocating a return to the AAC. That ship sailed. Had we not let everything collapse under the last administration, we might be in the new Big 12 which wouldn’t be awful. We are just sort of stuck where we are. Can’t move up can’t move down. It is really a difficult place for a program that was the envy of many 10 years ago.

To clarify, your evidence that the BE doesn’t have good resources is citing that they’re 4th/5th in the nation in basketball spend despite having a school that was in the Horizon league a decade ago? A spread where six figures separates the #1 conference from the rest of the top 5? (except the ACC who’s mean is swayed heavily by the ridiculous budgets of Duke & Louisville)

Just want to make sure we're on the same page here... that in your head, that is what the data tells you.

The point was that UConn can do it.

well, duh

It's specifically why I typed "initial reaction after reading first 7 words".

I was having a good day regarding faith in humanity until reading that reply.
Reply was for general public as they read what you write and run with it incorrectly. Happens every time.

I’m a UConn fan. Have been for more years than most people who post here have been alive. Went to my first game, UConn-BC in the NCAA tournament when Cousy coached BC and Balesuknia played at UConn. Game was at URI, if you can believe it. BC won but if they had the 3 in those days, UConn would have won in a blow out. But I don’t really think UConn can or will do it. For several reasons. First and foremost, I don’t think the athletic department has the willingness to do what it takes to get there. For example, if we lose another first rounder to a lower seed, they won’t dump Hurley. They’ll say he is a fine fellow and has made us a tournament team again. And most of the fan base will say the same thing. And they’ll make these inane comparisons to Jim Calhoun. And I truly don’t think Hurley is a coach who is capable of getting us to that elite level. Good coach, sure. NCAA title level? Highly questionable. Finally as I’ve said many iMessage before playing in the New Big East isn’t conducive to building a championship program. Not enough great teams. Villanova was already a national power and to Jay’s credit he was able to keep them there. But building one is very difficult. Especially in a league without any.

I'm bummed, wanted to beat this guy

Bye bye Nova

No sugarcoating this. It is an unmitigated disaster for the NEWBIE. Villanova was the sole national program in the league. If they regress, the NEWB will be a bunch of eh programs that will rarely need to pack extra uniforms for the Tournament. Val is probably rolled up in a ball in the corner of her office wondering why she left the A10.

I suppose it does leave an opening for someone to climb, but reality is that there is a huge difference between climbing to the top of the NEWB and climbing to the upper reaches of college basketball. And in terms of resources very few NEWB programs have enough to get there. And it is probably unlikely that another really successful coach will stick around long enough to take a program where it needs to be. Jay was from a different era. If St Johns were to make a final four run next year, as an example, my guess is Anderson would be coaching at Florida State or Iowa in 2024. I would think UConn is one of the few NEWBIE members who could make the move. We have facilities, financial resources, and we’ve been there before, though it has been close to a decade. And it would require a number of pretty major changes in the way the program is operating now. I doubt there is the stomach for it. The only others I see having any potential are Xavier and Creighton, but both are long shots.

It is really really hard to build a national program. And it is even more difficult to do it in a league where you are the only one. Jay had the advantage of having built Villanova in the Big East competing against Top 10 programs week in and week out. Maintaining it was a great feat, but not as hard as building something new in a much less fertile environment. If it were easy the A10 would have top 10 team every year.
You actually sat down and typed all this out. Incredible.

Ah, so now I finally get what the issue with you is. You're really freaking old! :)

going to MSG?

Went last night.

As others have posted, the consensus in the Nova board is that stepping down is largely due to NIL. Seth Greenberg apparently claimed Jay told him that, but would never say that publicly. The guy wants to build his program in a specific, family oriented way and the new rules are going to make that extremely difficult.

We haven't seen anything yet with NIL. It is starting to develop in CFB with boosters putting together 30-40 million dollar pools for NIL yearly. Tennessee landed a top 5 kid at QB by paying him 2 mill and it's entirely legal. Obviously less money overall in hoops but the direction is clear.

Put $50M aside in the bank and go out when you want to on your terms. Enjoy life.
This reminded me of a story of a guy who sold his business he built for a long time
“Yesterday i had a million dollars and a million problems. Today I have a million dollars.”

You can't replace Hall of Fame coaches easily. No one has ever done it in college.

We'll see about Duke.

UNC, UConn, Indiana, UCLA, Kentucky, none of them managed to do it. I'm not going to bring up Kansas and their crookedness.
UNC replaced Frank McGuire with Dean Smith. And went to the FF in the year following Coach Smith and Roy. It was turbulent when Gut left however, as it should have been Roy next up.

Compare and contrast Wright’s exit to that of Coach K…

Much different. Wright only announced when he did because word was starting to get around. He said his plan was not to announce before the basketball Banquet last night. That was for the players and staff and for those being recognized. There was very Little reference to Wright‘s departure .
Interestingly, Whitmore, Armstrong and their fathers were in attendance and acknowledged by Jay.. so Who knows if they try to get out of their NLI. But, that was an encouraging sign.

If the second is what counts, then UConn also should be considered to have successfully replaced Calhoun with Kevin Ollie.
