James Breeding

The truth is, he would look like a whiny little bitch if his first press conference was to complain about refs. Hurley is learning.
Yep. Literally no upside for him. Don’t think pissing Breeding off even more than he already is at Hurley is the way to go.

That's kind of my point to people who keeps saying, "a coach has to work the refs. He's gotta work the refs."

There is never a positive benefit in "working the refs. "

Coaches need the refs to like and respect them, not to hate them. And no respectable ref has ever feared a coach's wrath.

Nobody is ever gettting anywhere with that guy, so they have to try and win despite his presence when they unfortunately are stuck with him. And they very nearly did last night.

I haven't read through all the posts yet, but does anyone have any idea how many calls against UConn Breeding called?

I completely agree with your last line. And I'm not really sure why some people think Hurley needs to work the refs more than he does.

I do think there is benefit in "working the refs" though ... working doesn't always have to mean screaming at. And that's not what Hurley actually does anyway... it's just the narrative about him. EX: Yesterday he pointed out Morez Johnson dragging his pivot foot and they immediately called it.

I don't think Hurley is trying to intimidate when he gets into the refs. I think he's playing his role and he sees that as advocating for his team no matter what, even if it looks ridiculously biased to others. There's definitely a happy balance to be struck, but I'd rather have a coach that works the refs too hard than one who acts like a church mouse... Those guys get pushed around and worked over.

Counterpoint: Hurley is the face of the sport and if he makes a calm and factual statement of objection specifically about Breeding, he can bring attention to it. Say multiple times they won we lost BUT there’s an issue with this ref, etc etc and “I just wish anger and bias to me wouldn’t affect my players so badly.”

Maybe Dan genuinely likes James but thinks he’s a bad ref so he doesn’t want to say anything. But he’s the big name of the 2 guys, the ref already sucks, how much worse can it get? Say something and call out ncaa/big east and see what happens.

I didn't say he should complain about the refs. Plenty of other folks are doing that for him. He even jokingly asked if he would get fined for saying something. All I said is that it was complete sarcasm. The beauty is casual fans don't get it.

Non-call was the right call there, but despite Michigan’s whining it was closer to a charge than a block. Reibe had position first, was in a legal guarding position and never reached in with his hands. The contact, which was pretty clearly incidental, started with Cadeau running into Reibe’s chest.
Cadeau also obviously traveled on that play in his attempt to body up & draw contact with Reibe, then flop and flail around like a fish on a riverbank.

OF course, crickets from the incompetent zebra clowns watching the play unfold.

Vegas also was going to get absolutely wrecked if UConn won… just saying
You really shouldn’t post crap like this. Unless your theory is that Breeding made calls against us all year so that when both he and UConn made the championship game it wouldn’t look suspicious when he made sure our opponent won. And having typed that, it appears incredibly stupid.

There are multiple reasons why we should try to move to a P4 conference. This is one. Our playing style isn’t suited not a match for the way Big East games are officiated. We need to get more revenue. But we have a major Breeding problem. Clearly there is vindictiveness there and an axe to grind. The bigger question is why was this crew chosen and allowed to officiate this game? I remember when games typically were called by neutral conference officials. Something seems to be at play here.

It's Cowherd. That alone discredits anything said.
I must have missed where the SDSU game in 2023 wasn’t a blow out, where the Purdue game was competitive, and when edey wasn’t getting the benefit of tons of calls.

Solo’s two second half fouls were totally on him and on plays where he just needed to let the other guy go. Those are the “undisciplined fouls” that Hurley was talking about post game.

The play that TBS never replayed that I’d like to see again was Solo’s missed layup after Tarris stepped into the passing game and then saved the ball under our basket with about 3 minutes left that would have cut it to I think 2 or 4. Instead, they came down and hit a 3 and to me that was the single key play of the game. I’ve only seen the play at one angle and full speed and I can’t tell if he was fouled or not. He might not have been but I’d love to know if anyone can use AI to rotate the angle they showed us.

But I don’t want to whine about particular calls because most of the time you can’t fairly judge them out of context of the game anyway. I stand by my original post which is I don’t understand with hundreds of Division 1 referees how a ref with a history with a coach or school could get assigned to a championship game with them.
Putting Breeding in the officiating may have been intentional.

.-.
or just bet on with early 7.5 and final 6.5 anyone betting UConn won
No the futures market. There was an article at the beginning of the final four that Vegas’s preferred winner was Michigan and that they’d take a bath if UConn won

Diplomatic, not sarcastic. He's learning.
That was running up the white flag. He understands that he is not going to win a war of words with officials.

There's "working the refs" and then there's "working the refs". Coaches criticize calls all the time, and it does seem to impact the way future plays are called. But calling refs of sing clowns is highly unlikely to make them want to make a call going your way in the future.
