James Breeding

This was from before the game. Our history with Breeding is well known. Anderson is another one. Hurley called him a clown before. Certainly was not ideal having those 2 involved tonight.

This is why I believe ref should be picked like an arbitrator is picked at arbitration.

Both A.D.'s get a list of available refs. Both A.D.'s get to strike X number of refs, then they rank the remaining in order of preference. The top three highest ranked mutual matches will be the refs for that game.
Breeding would never work another game. He seems almost universally despised.

Just like most things in life it’s not what you know but who ya know most likely.

It is strange how the officials are chosen though. I was under The impression they were graded.

Also weird that a guy with history with one team is placed in a championship game. Most organizations would want to avoid any kind of perception of bias or favoritism.

Previous poster said it in football you never have conference referees in championship games in which a conference team is involved.

how is it possible that in the national title game the NCAA can appoint a referee with a history with one of the two teams?
Yep as soon as I saw Breeding I knew he's a problem .... Univ. of Louisville's own, who somehow is allowed to games for Pitino too, even when he worked with him as a prof, at the same school....the guys always had issues vs. Uconn and it's coaches, no matter which one, over the years.

I can't believe how many people still don't realize the impact of non-calls. First, it directly causes a lot of those "inexplicably missed shots". Second, it impacts how a team plays. They tend to avoid contact since it never gets called. That means fewer inside shots and rushed jump shots. Third, grabbing and hip checks make it difficult to get open jump shots. Everything is highly contested and rushed. Fourth, players get frustrated and rattled.

The problem isn't even the FT differential. It is ENTIRELY about the non-calls. If Michigan is called for a few more of the fouls they committed, how does it change the game?

The crew went on and on about Michigan's defense. I have seen this phenomenon over and over and over again. A team suddenly shoots better when the opposing team is called for even a reasonable number of fouls.

Not to be that guy, but the glazing of Yaxel and Cadeau and 14 out of 15 50:50 calls going michigans way, it just felt like the narrative was for them to win and it was going to happen. They rarely talked about UConn, other than how it affected Michigan’s chances to win.

I’m surprised I’m saying these things cuz these takes usually sound corny to me, but it really did feel like that.
I rarely complain about the refs. This game felt pre-determined.

It wasn't 14 of 15, but there were a good 7-9 calls in this game, many involving Cadeau, that were either no calls on Michigan (Cadeau push in back on Silas & rake across the arm on Tarris), or should have been no calls on Uconn (Silas fighting through a pick at top of key, Cadeau slipping and selling and it being called a foul on Silas). There was a Johnson trip and push in the back on the same play they didn't call.

Most of these you can find on Twitter. One of the worst officiated games I've watched in an NCAA tournament.

Cadeau consistently pushed Silas in the back and there was no call.

Silas reached in and got tagged for that 3FT thing in the beginning. Smart play, but cheap, and then he got Silas trapped under the hoop for his second. Neither of those were on the refs. It was the others, in the second half that were real issues. The illegal screen, etc.

And it's just that Cadeau was given free range once he had two fouls. He was, in my opinion, the key. Shut him down and Michigan would struggle, in particular with a hobbled Yax. And UConn really wasn't give the opportunity, and he was able to really mug the only real point of attack UConn player in return.

When I saw he was going to referee the national championship the first words that came to mind was insurance policy. For some reason Dan seems to think he’s a good referee.

This sums up my thoughts exactly. I’m not sure I’ve ever complained about a ref on here

It’s disappointing that’s the product which was put out on CBB’s biggest stage, and it seems many have taken notice

My second final 4. Hard enough to beat Michigan. Impossible to beat Michigan and the refs. If we are lucky enough make another final 4 and I know Breeding is reffing I just wont go. What’s the point. And I will save myself a lot of money. The amount of no calls tonight will become legend.

No calls and absolutely awful calls. Demary’s to foul out on Cadeau was particularly bad. That doesn’t happen and it’s a 2 point game in the final minutes

I called it in the pregame thread. Cadeau’s acting is embarrassing and was ultimately one of the primary deciding factors in this game by putting Demary on the sidelines. But what surprised me was Morez Johnson does it too. He has this reputation as a big tough guy but it turns out he’s a flopping bicch.

The head of officiating is Chris Rastatter, go after the ones who employ these officials too. Let's just take off our blue colored glasses, this is the kind of officiating that will get the casual sports fan to turn off the tv and never watch March madness again.

I'm appalled. How do you not call that Cadeau rake across Tarris’ arm where he wasn’t close to the ball? This will be two titles the refs handed Michigan. Something smells in the NCAA. It wasn’t a call, or two. It was about 7, with no returning the favor.

Was the worst officiated game I’ve seen in a tourney.

Everyone remember that hook and hold? Everyone remember the last possession? Down 4 and we had the ball. We were equal on field goals (9 vs 2 from 3), dominated the rebounding, only had one more turnover than Michigan, +2 on assists and then you turn on the TV "... well hats off to UConn, but it was obvious that Michigan was the much better team today."

We showed up at a National Championship game and what we got was a Tuesday Night Big East game.

Opponent was able to grab, hold, push, shove, snowplow, and bulldoze with impunity.

That game was refereed nothing like the previous 5 tourney games.

It’s a damn shame.

He got his way in a National Tilte game. Whatever grudge they have with Hurley is hopefully washed away and we can get a normal whistle going forward. Still hurts

I hope the staff submits clips to the ncaa. Won’t change or mean anything but just out of principle.

And then I hope Val separately does the same on behalf of the conference.
He got a Championship game, unfortunately, his profile has been raised

When 2 of any team's starters play 16 and 21 minutes respectively against a top opponent, and the center plays the whole game in foul trouble, the refs are deciding who is going to win. That is a bush league youth ref move, and I have seen it quite a few times. A ref won't ring up one side 20-5 in fouls, he will call a few fouls early in the game on key players, and then the team is chasing the entire game. I know a lot of youth and high school refs, and they have admitted doing this when they want one team to win for whatever reason. Ironically, it didn't work last night, so they had to also ring up UConn players while letting Michigan get away with murder.

It is totally unacceptable that it happened in a National Championship game.

Acting like Cadeau was shooting in the first minute of the game on a rip through from 40 feet is egregious. Calling the foul is whatever but giving him 3 FTs was a joke.
