I really don’t like to dwell on how games are called. And I congratulate Dusty May and his team for doing what they had to do, playing good D and making their foul shots. And I’m the first one to admit I cringe watching Chief complain about foul calls game after game when anyone can see that much of the disparity is based on how we play.

But. Having said all that, with hundreds of Division 1 referees out there, how is it possible that in the national title game the NCAA can appoint a referee with a history with one of the two teams? Frankly, I’m shocked that a ref from either of the conferences in the final game would be allowed near the court? Wouldn’t you want 3 refs from neutral conferences, which doesn’t see either team all the time?

If anyone knows the thinking on that I’d love to hear it. Is it really totally based on grading and they don’t care if there’s a history between one of the refs and one of the teams? That just strikes me as literally crazy, and an issue that can be totally eliminated just by not letting a ref from either team’s conference on the court.

I’ll talk about the game tomorrow. Too upset right now. The game was there, we just didn’t hit enough shots to overcome Michigan and the refs. But man, if anyone criticizes the guts and heart of this team they can fight me first. Because sane people would have quit when everthing is against them and shots aren’t falling. And yet, we had a chance to win in the last 30 seconds.

I don't understand how Breeding ends up in this game. I really don't understand why the Big East insists on hiring him.

I knew after the first call against Demary that they were going to take him out of the game. He would have gotten a better whistle if they had just let Cadeau call the fouls himself.

Boggles the mind.

Regardless of what the NCAA thinks about the quality of Breedings work, it seems hard to justify putting him on this game given his history with Dan. You can find 3 good officials that have no negative ties to either team. I'd love to know why this was Breedings first NCAA Championship.

27-2 without Breeding.

7-4 with Breeding.

How on earth did we get 11 games with this dude? Also, I stole the numbers from John Silver so they might be wrong.

Anyway.
they're correct. 2-4 in the last 6 games reffed by Breeding

96% winning percentage in games not reffed by him
63% winning percentage in games Breeding reffed.

Egregious but talking or mentioning bias in officiating is completely taboo so it will continue on until he retires

Almost impossible to talk to. That is how they describe him. How he gets this game is beyond me

I’m not sure it would be possible to have fully neutral conference refs because the assignments are set at the beginning of the F4 and a lot of guys work multiple conferences. That said, it is crazy that with Breeding’s history with Hurley that they didn’t assign him to the UM/UA F4 game. It seems like the most obvious answer to avoid any potential controversy.

The NCAA has issues, and I will leave it at that. I have more to say, but don't want to be called a conspiracy guy

And wasn’t Anderson banned from Big East games?

This is why I believe refs should be picked like an arbitrator is picked at arbitration.

Both A.D.'s get a list of available refs. Both A.D.'s get to strike X number of refs, then they rank the remaining in order of preference. The top three highest ranked mutual matches will be the refs for that game.

I have been an amateur official most all of my adult life and you are 1000% correct. You're not going to see a Big Ten or SEC crew working a Michigan/Alabama football final. You're not going to see Hockey East or ECAC officials work a BU/Quinnipiac hockey final. No referee from the Big Ten or the Big East should have been working tonight's game.
