Jalen Adams (Committed to UConn)

I live in the Upper Valley of Vermont/NH. I saw that Brewster was coming to play in the Concord area I figured an hour drive is not to much to ask, why not go and check out the final of the Pembroke Classic and see Jalen Adams play. First let me mention that the team they played was quite impressive as well, with almost their whole team getting recruited by D1 schools. Though not as many, "Prestigious" schools as Brewster.

So here is Brewsters lineup
Jalen Adams, Uconn Commit. 6,2
Donovan Mitchell, Louisville Commit 6'3
David Crisp, Washington Commit 6,0
Justin Simon, Arizona Commit 6'5
Marcus Derrickson Georgetown Commit 6'8
Alex Illikainen, Wisconsin Commit 6'8
Jarred Reuter, Virginia Commit 6'8
5 other guys that did not play barely at all but would be superstars at any normal high school.

Walking into the gym was electric at warmups saw about 100 dunks in 5 minutes. Here is what I observed watching the game. With a lineup like that I did not know what to expect, I figured spread the wealth, I dunno. Anyway on that team of superstars Jalen Adams is the guy. Their offense runs through him. With the above lineup basically Simon seemed to play all game at the 3rd guard spot, Jalen played most of the game with 2 maybe 3 minute breaks one in each half. Crisp and Mitchell share the rest of the minutes at the other guard spot with Mitchell starting. The 3 big men share the two positions.

Having only seen some highlights of him I was not sure what to expect. What an incredible talent. Silky smooth effortless moves. Makes everything look so easy. Did not shoot particularly well from 3, hit one, took maybe 4 but he has a nice stroke and certainly is confident shooting. Nice stroke from the free throw line. I saw him dive on the floor, block shots from behind, get gritty rebounds, repeatedly break traps, wicked crossovers. He can score in a variety of ways, he had a beautiful floating runner, any number of angles on driving layups. On the break he is incredible to watch. So explosive, but so smooth at the same time and such a sure finisher. He was the leader from start to finish. With the game being close down the stretch he scored 6 points in the last 2 minutes or so and got a key steal and rebound. This is playing against a very talented team. I tried to shoot some videos and might have one or two of his nice drives. Also hes easily 6'2, next to simon he only looked a tiny bit shorter.

Some thoughts on the other Brewster players
David Crisp: Freakish athelete, not unlike Boat. In warmups he was doing 360 dunks and stuff like nothing and hes MAYBE 6 foot. Had a nice jumper and 3 point shot, never really saw him put that athleticism on display and take it inside
Justin Simon: I know Arizona gets elite athletes and he sure is one of those. Had like 3 dunks a few layups. Hes 6,5 but his wingspan is probably like 6'9. Did not see him shoot a jumpshot, and saw him miss several free throws...
Donovan Mitchell: I know hes maybe, "the one that got away" being from CT and all. Hes kind of the opposite of Adams, Strong guy. He had a few Bull drives through double teams with quick finishes. Did not see him shoot from outside. Hard to judge from one game but Adams at least seems much more versatile. Hes listed at 6'3 and did not appear taller than Adams.
The three big men. The Wisconsin guy was kind of Slight and needs to hit the weight room or he will get killed next year, he can shoot though, saw him hit a few nice jumpers. The Virginia guy was the most polished big man, big strong guy with good low post moves. But maybe not a huge upside. The Georgetown guy looked like he had the most upside. Not the most polished down low, but a huge guy, with soft hands, a good passer, and could really shoot.

I know lots of people go and watch Adams play and it was mentioned that he was the tourney mvp in the other thread but I had to share my experience. there is no way there are 25 guys better than him in the country, probably not 10 guys better. We have a star in the making.

Thanks for the report!

I was going to crack that 25 percent shooting from three isn't going to cut it at this level (deliberately ignoring the small sample size), but figured the joke would be lost in translation.

Either way, it is very reassuring to know he has a leadership role and much of the offense runs through him. Didn't want him to be just a spoke in the wheel this year. Those other guys can be spokes.

How did he look with his left hand (on the drive or finishing)??? Really looking forward to watching this kid at UConn.

Good question. That's the knock on Adams... that he doesn't have much of a left.

.-.
It seemed like he was the only one Creating offense of the dribble. They would swing it around, if someone was open they might shoot it, or if the lane was their they would take it. But he was taking it to guys off the dribble. He likes to crossover and drive left. Looking at my videos and remembering one play he drives left quite a bit. He finished left a few times on drives and one spectacular move on the break. He pushed in traffic, went to full speed and when he hit traffic slowed down, they fell off then smoothly finished left. The thing you notice is how smooth he is and how easy he makes it look. As for his 3's, he shoots a jump shoot, has a good looking stroke and again seemed confident shooting them. The misses were all close, just weren't falling. He is a good passer too, had several assists. My videos are awful, MIGHT have one or two that are decent.

Thanks for the report. If guard play wins national championships we should all be pretty calm now that we have Jalen regardless of how the rest of recruiting goes for next year. It's gonna be a year until most of us get eyeballs on him in games but I can't wait.

I don't understand, I thought this recruiting class was doomed. smh

It's not that it's doomed, it's more just that Adams is from only one state away, so he doesn't count as an actual recruit or anything. All we have to do is drive 100 miles, knock on his door, and of course he'll commit right then and there. You don't even need to stop for gas on the way back, for cripe's sake. Easy, peasy.

Now if you get on a plane and pull someone in from a Carolina or Dakota or somewhere - then you've got yourself a recruiting class.

I'm actually more shocked that there seem to be pretty good players on Brewster's roster that didn't commit to UCONN. What are they and their families thinking???

.-.
any opinions on the sports illustrated article of top 16 squads to not win nc2a title?

disses many great UCONN clubs by omission

see the comments to counteract poor authorship? who be huskyjonathan

.-.
He's a beast and he will be great here. What's it like to root for a team with a bad point guard? I don't even remember.

The continuity and run of our point guards has been pretty remarkable...

Basically since JC got here (with some overlap on the "dual PG" setup)...

Tate George 4 year starter (1st round pick)
Chris Smith 3 year starter (2nd round pick)
KO 3 year starter (nba 13 year career)
Sheffer 3 year starter (2nd round pick/israel)
Ricky 3 year starter
Khalid 3 year starter (2nd round pick)
Taliek 4 year starter
Ben 2 year starter (lottery pick)
Marcus 2 year starter (1st round pick)
AJ 3 year starter (2nd round pick)
Kemba 2 year starter (lottery pick)
Shabazz 3 year starter (1st round pick)
Boat 3 year starter (???)
Jalen Adams...

That's pretty sick. Jalen is going to be a star here.

I love me some JA but could you refresh my memory on the other 45 reasons

He is so in tune with the current squad and really cannot wait to be a husky. What I love most about Jalen is how much he loves UConn. He also has a growing relationship with Purv, which is great for backcourt chemistry next year. Imagine a lineup of Adams, Purvis, Hamilton, Stone, Brimah. Oh my god.

FIVE BEST SIGNEES

i
1. Jalen Adams, Brewster Academy, signed with UConn

Adams (No. 25 in ESPN 100) has been an undersized scorer for most of his career but is now showing more and more signs of being able to slide over to the lead guard spot at the next level, which should allow him to step right in for Ryan Boatright upon arriving at UConn.

i
2. Justin Simon, Brewster Academy, signed with Arizona

Simon (No. 27 in ESPN 100) is more import than export to the preps. He was a well known before he arrived at Brewster, but he has freakish length and phenomenal defensive instincts that will be on par with Rondae Hollis-Jefferson, all while adding great size, vision and distributing skills at the point.

3. Donovan Mitchell, Brewster Academy, signed with Louisville

Brewster Academy’s third-ranked guard in the ESPN 100 (No. 38), Mitchell has been developed in the prep ranks from Day 1, and that helped him emerge as one of the biggest summer stock-risers in the country this year. Now he joins the likes of Montrezl Harrell, Russ Smith and Luke Hancock as former prep products to be scooped up by Rick Pitino.

4. Tyler Lydon, New Hampton School, signed with Syracuse

Lydon (No. 49 in ESPN 100) came off the board early to Syracuse, pledging in the first half of his junior year. A lot of that had to do with the fact that he was bound to blow up quickly after arriving at New Hampton with his size, length, underrated motor and budding skill set.

5. Danjel Purifoy, Hargrave Military Academy, signed with Auburn

The physical tools of Purifoy (No. 67 in ESPN 100) make him an ideal fit for Bruce Pearl’s style of play, and while his reputation was intact before arriving at Hargrave, he’s taken his game to new levels by dramatically improving his skils and ability to shoot the ball from the perimeter.

UNDER-THE-RADAR SIGNEES

Aaron Falzon, Northfield-Mt. Hermon School, signed with Northwestern

Stanford bound big man Josh Sharma (No. 75 in ESPN 100) is the highest-ranked prospect at the school, but Falzon (No. 91) is a highly skilled forward who will have a clear niche at the next level with his ability to shoot the ball from behind the 3-point line and will be an immediate and consistent weapon in Chris Collins’ offense.

Elijah Burns, Blair Academy, signed with Nortre Dame

He’s just outside the ESPN 100 and already signed, so most people haven’t taken notice of the recent strides in his game, but he’s expanding his skill set to the perimeter while maintaining his power in the paint. Suddenly he looks like a four-year impact player and multiple-year starter for the Irish.

BEST AVAILABLE PROSPECTS

JaQuan Lyle, IMG Academy

The former Oregon signee was the No. 42 prospect in 2014, and while he isn’t eligible in 2015, he’s nonetheless one of the best available prospects in the country heading into the late signing period. Oregon is fighting to get him back, but Ben Simmons (No. 1 in 2015) and Antonio Blakeney (No. 14) are actively recruiting him to join them at LSU.

Kobe Eubanks, Elev8 Academy

Eubanks was initially committed to Baylor in 2014, and he's been one of the biggest standouts of the early prep season as a big wing who can score from all over the floor. He’s considering Georgia, Oregon, Connecticut, Missouri, Providence, Louisville, Kansas, South Florida, Maryland and Virginia Tech.

Khyri Thomas, Fork Union Military Academy

Thomas is similar to Michigan freshman Aubrey Dawkins -- who was under-recruited last year at New Hampton -- in that he’s a bigger, skilled guard who won’t do anything fancy to jump out at you, but is well suited to play within an offensive structure at the next level. Creighton is among his top suitors.

Jeremy Harris, Fishburne Military School

The one-time Coastal Carolina pledge never signed his letter of intent and that turned out to be a good decision when he was one of the top performers at the National Prep Showcase to open the season. Now the big lefty wing is drawing interest from high major schools with his length, athleticism and ability to make 3s.

.-.
Undersized at the 2 in today's college game. Not at the 1.

Eh, you won't make millions as a 6'2" 2-guard but it's probably median height at the college level. Maybe a little-below average but not small.

When's the last time UConn had a starting freshman PG at the beginning of the season? It had to be a while ago.

Taliek Brown - Freshman 1999-2000

2001-2004 - So-Sr Taliek Brown
2005 - So. Marcus Williams (Williams only played a handful of games in 2004)
2006 - Jr. Marcus Williams
2007 - RS Jr. AJ Price (Price hadn't played at UConn prior but he wasn't a freshman)
2008 - RS Sr. AJ Price
2009 - 5th year AJ Price
2010 - So. Walker
2011 - Jr. Walker
2012 - So. Napier (note that Boat did start quite a bit after he was cleared, Napier was the PG though)
2013 - Jr. Napier
2014 - Sr. Napier
2015 - Sr. Boatright

Obviously prior to Brown was El-Amin who started as a freshman PG. Every single one of those PGs had a chance to play in a final four, Williams is the only one who didn't (due to his mid season suspension his freshman year). Of the past 6 PGs only Brown didn't play at all in the NBA (Boat is obviously still in school).
