Saying purv has 'good athleticism' is a bit off base. he has world class athleticism, thats the difference between him and Walker/Napier as prospects. We really need to see how far his skill set has come to make a judgement, but i wouldn't be surprised if he struck while the iron was hot after a year.

After watching the Draft last week unless the player is getting assured of being a lead pipe cinch lottery pick I would be real careful if I was a college kid.

The foreign factor pushes kids not only down lower in the draft but out of the draft completely.

That, and Shabazz and Kemba are far more complete players (Sr/Jr respectively vs Sph Purv).

This particular draft was deeper than any in recent memory though. You'd expect next year's to be pretty lean.

Allegedly world-class athleticism or no, Purvis was quite mediocre in his one season of D1 college ball. I think he'll be a fair bit better next season, but let's not sit here and pretend that Purvis is a season away from being a lock for the lottery.

what do you mean mediocre? I have to disagree he was playing pretty well in a system where he was a spot up shooter and young. he had one serious flaw in FT shooting, but then again he didn't really shoot that many. theres nothing alleged about his athleticism its world class and that stuff gets you notice. he plays ABOVE the rim. best ath to don a uconn jersey since rudy

On the other hand, you had a very raw James Young go #16 in a very deep draft.
 
Cheezus we have short memories. "Purvis is more talented than Bazz and Kemba." What? Taller and more athletic, yes. But Kemba and Bazz are in the league because of their talent. Tell me what weaknesses Bazz and Kemba had in their last seasons at UConn. Outside shooting? Passing? Free throws? Creating their own shot? Finishing near the rim? Rebounding? Leadership? Running the offense? No, no, no, no, no, no, no, and no. Those two have complete games. Purvis has some question marks and until we see them improve, there's little reason to think he's one and done at UConn. The NBA draft is not short on 6'2"/6'3" guards with great athleticism.

I also don't think we should be overselling the value of a redshirt year. This isn't football, and Purvis isn't a 7 footer who has only been playing for 2 years. Spending a year working on skills is spending a year not playing in real games. You can play in real games, and still work on your skills. Everything you do in a redshirt year you can do in a regular year, except you actually still get to play games.

Totally agree with the first part. There's a difference between athletic ability and talent that I believe was totally ignored in the previous post.

As far as the second part, I think you're probably reading into the point that has been made a little incorrectly. I didn't see anyone saying that he's better off having spent a year practicing than practicing and playing games. To me, it was people saying that he's going to be much better than the player we last saw suit up for NC State because he has another year of practice under his belt. Those are two pretty different points.
 
In his case a redshirt year should help. Last year worked for us and I believe would be a big help to Rodney. He is good, how good is the ? Don't forget he does have 3 years eligibility left and may need a few of those years to be the player he wants to be.

Not that I disagree with your assessment of Purvis (he does stuff as a two guard that you just never see), but calling him the best athlete since Rudy is a big statement when we've had guys like Stanley and Drummond play here.

It depends what traits people associate with talent. I don't think anybody is arguing that Purvis is a better player right now than Shabazz or Kemba, just that he might be a better long-term prospect because of his size and athleticism. What you describe as "talent" - passing, shooting, etc. - I think of more as skill than talent, but I suppose it's an argument of semantics. I look at the leap Dion Waiters made his sophomore season at Syracuse and think Purvis could have a similar year. Or, the tendencies that hampered him at N.C. State - streaky perimeter shooting, out-of-control play, etc. - could continue to exist. We'll see.

Ollie called Purvis the most talented player during practices last year and guess who he was practicing with? Shabazz. His issues at nc state (streaky shooting, being out of control, FT, shooting) are all problems we have been known for fixing and he's had over a year to do it. Just because you don't play a year of basketball don't mean you don't get better over that year. Purvis will play like a Junior this year because he is one essentially. Same way AJ Price didn't play like a freshman his sophomore season even though he never played freshman year.

Now when I say talent I'm not talking about skills. Skills are shooting, passing, dribbling, etc. Guys like Stanley Robinson, Rudy Gay, Andre Drummond were tremendously talented guys. But had no skills. In the sense of talent Rodney is more talented than any PGs we've had in the past. He's not lacking on many skills either. I've said before that we have watched Ollie develop 3 PGs who used to be out of control bad decision makers into heady guys who seem to always make the right play. Purvis is the most talented out the bunch and I'm sure he will do the same with him and we are going to see something even better.

Let me start by saying that I sincerely hope you are right. I pray to God that you are right. But I have to agree that I don't know what you saw at NCSU that made you think this. I watched him alot that year because I was mad we didn't him out of high school. And I have to say, I remember coming away from that season feeling ok we'd missed. I am excited about him and hope it's the Rodney Purvis KO speaks so highly of. But if it's the one who played at NCSU I don't think any of us will be all to thrilled.

After ajou Deng was called the best player in the floor in practice a few years ago, that particular argument is a tough sell here.
