Jacob Ross Commits

Ehhhhh….this is kind of a one off. Most mid-major guys would be better served by going to a mid-major and actually playing.

He can either hit the market and try again next year or he can just stick it out here and maybe see the court down the road.
If he actually redshirts, he can just go play at the mid major next year and get his full four years of playing. Redshirting pushes the NIL earning years one year later, advantageous relative to peers.

Yeah, 4 or 5s
I still think we need someone who can play point guard in future years(not this upcoming year) or at least backup in 2026-2027 as we could lose both Demary and Smith next year. Smith through graduation and Demary NBA. It is nice we got 2 good pgs this year in the portal but not sure we can do that every year.

Depth is depth.

Would not be surprised to see him RS next season and then we’ll see where it goes.
I read this very sentiment on X yesterday.

If we can use an aggressive big guard willing and able to drive through traffic, absorb contact and score there may be minutes for him. There weren't many finishes last year like he showed in these highlights.
Needs to work on his left hand. If you can’t use both hands at the level UConn plays against it limits a players ability to finish when going to the rim. Ball is example one he has no right hand if he did he would have finished a dozen more drives last year.

These kids are all so good even at a 3* level they are not pushed to work on their craft. Any high level division 1 recruit should absolutely have a better than average off hand if they plan on getting to the basket effectively.

There may be some exceptions but those kids are athletic freaks who just jump over people or are so quick they can just get away with it.

Wish the current crop of high school coaches spent more time on developing the player rather than just letting them score 25 pts even when they know there are parts of their game that are just not going to translate at the next level. But winning is way more important to them than developing the player.

I played on a high school team that had two people secure div 1 scholarships in high school in 1980 and I can assure you if you used the wrong hand in the lay up line pre game no matter how good you where it meant you were coming off the bench to start the game. We all had decent off hands it was not an option. He did let us get away with jumping off the wrong foot but when we did there would be some practice reps for those who did it.

But he looks a little less athletic but very similar to his brother. I think Jayden has that kind of handle but when he speeds up those cross overs and between the legs moves become to telegraphed and rushed and he starts fumbling the ball.

I think the brothers have a chance to play two season together at UConn and that is pretty cool. We should all stop with the Jayden bashing, he clearly bleeds UConn blue and if he was at all frustrated with the coaching staff more than he is disappointed in his own development his brother would never had chosen UConn.

More than anything else this gives me hope that we are going to see a different Jayden next season which could be a really good thing for us if for some reason Mullins struggles a bit on defense. If Jy Ross can be then lock down defender we need gives us a ton of options 1-3 next year.

1 - I believe that his older brother (Jayden) will contribute a bit more this upcoming season than many on here are expecting. Not star numbers but contributions like some of the better Stewart/Ball efforts in their freshman season.

2 - I believe Jacob will become a quality contributor a year or so down the road. This is a perfect situation for a kid like him and his development may lead to more kids in similar situations looking at this path as a valid option.

I can't wait till older brother Ross comes out blazin.

Like an acyclic coffin - remains to be seen. Gonna have to wait to see if either Ross develops/improves.

I saw both Ross brothers play together at Hoophall a couple years ago. IMO neither will be the type of impact players that are key to chasing a championship, but both are good enough to give you something that helps on a championship team. To get his high ranking, Darius Adams must have kicked butt a lot better than every time I watched him. I am honestly just as happy with Jacob, and I sense he will accept his role on the team better than where Adams was heading with the additions of our 2 point guards. I think we have another utility infielder on board that adds to team versatility. I also agree with other posters that this ratifies that Jayden is 'all in' bleeding blue despite modest on court time in his career to date. Now just give me a 5/4 name or two I can hope for!!

What difference does it really make?
He surely is better quality than your normal walk-on and most likely worth the small NIL tag.
Why not? His brother has shown a sense of loyalty, perhaps he will hang around a prove to fill a valuable role in year 3 or 4.

Maybe now we'll go after 6'8" PF Tristen Reed? We got his older brother.

I mean I wouldn’t say zero sense.
He gets to spend at least a year playing d1 ball with his brother…which not many people get to do, and he’ll have a pretty good idea of where he is developmentally at the end of the year. If he plays at a mid major for any number of reasons there’s no guarantee that puts him in good place to transfer after one year
In addition, he's has the real possibility of a national championship. If he red shirts he has a foot in the door here if he's good enough. If not, I'm sure Hurley will let him know and help find him a landing spot that meets his goals and skill level - with four years left to play.

Welcome aboard, Jacob! I like this move for both parties. There really is no downside for one year for either UConn or Jacob. And maybe it turns into more and is mutually beneficial down the road.
I'm still hoping for a center. They can't be one injury away from Reed or Reibe being the only 5.

It's fascinating to read some of the comments here about R2.

In his interview Tom Moore was quoted as saying, "the type of players the Huskies were seeking were those they could develop over the next year or two, because they already have what they believe is a very solid roster from which they can develop an 8- 10-player playing rotation.

With 364 D-1 schools, R2's rating in the mid to high 100's would make him a sought after player on most rosters in the country outside the 4-5 rosters loaded with 5 stars. If I recall correctly, we were linked to several players in this year's portal that were former 3 star prospects, rated more poorly than R2, but who developed so quickly in one or two years the P6 crowd all wanted them.

Maybe I'm an optimist relative to R2, and realistically the roster is loaded with experience and talent that may keep him on the bench, but Tom didn't say we're just seeking warm bodies to be practice players, nor did he exclude any possibility of the roster additions playing in their first year or two.

His personality fits Coach [Dan] Hurley in a sense of competitive passion with the way he approaches and plays the game,” Southern California head coach Julius Von Hanzlik old ZAGSBLOG. “He leaves it all on the floor. Jacob is willing to do whatever it takes to win. With Jacob being 6-6 long and athletic, we were able to do a ton of different things on both offense and defense. He legitimately guarded and played 1-5 for us. Jacob played point guard for us often as well as guard true bigs.”

Interesting that this commitment didn't get any attention from the Hartford Courant. No article about it. The Register (Hearst Media) did have an article that I already posted in this thread.

Interesting from that Article.

"Ross also had offers from Kansas, VCU and Old Dominion programs."

It would be nice if we beat out Kansas even for a deep bench piece.

Different position - Darius is a CG while Jacob is a wing.

We had 4 guards (Silas, Malachi, Solo, Braylon)
We had 3 wings (Stewart, Ross, Furphy) - Stew can guard a 4, Ross can guard a 2 - so by wing we have multi-position players (I don't like positionless unless they can play 1-5).
