Jacob Furphy to the portal

The more I think about it, where does he think he's going that's a better scenario?

1) There's very little game tape of him against competition similar to what he'll be facing.
2) He's not a physical specimen that leaps off the page at you.
3) He's not getting an NIL bag.

Ahmad Nowell was a higher recruit with better tools and he got about 9 mpg for VCU.
Anywhere where he can play is better.

Doesn’t matter how good a program may be if a kid isn’t going to play. Nobody gets better or improves their future from the bench.

Oh, so you saw a high basketball IQ in bits of a U19 international game.

I guess Hurley, Murray and Kimani missed your scouting report because they didn't play him at all the entire year.

I don't think he is looking for a money bag right now. It's more about playing time and getting better for a possible money bag later on. Teams like St Louis, Rider ect... are more in line for him I would think. He does have some game to him or else Hurley would not have looked and got him regardless of game tape availability that we see.

I saw the same things. That doesn't mean he'd be better than anyone that was ahead of him on the depth chart, nor does it mean that he could play a lick of defense since they don't play defense in U19 games, effectively

This is just a natural fallout of the portal era, at this point. In the previous 30 years at UConn, this guy likely would have been a 4 year player that would have developed and moved up the depth chart over time. But now, we're just going to recruit over you, or even beside you in the portal. So you may develop, but will you develop enough to get more minutes ? Doesn't really help his case that he probably can't play PG or SG at this level, at least not yet, and he doesn't have the upside or seniority that all the wings have in front of him.

Really think he could be a good player down the road, but at a program of UConn's level, without exuding athleticism, your chances are pretty slim. The same basic reason that Darius Adams decommitted. And he had more upside than Furphy.

It was telling when he wasn’t considered for minutes in the Furman game and they went with Millender instead.

I could see him go to somewhere like St Mary’s; closer to home, Aussie pipeline etc.
Hurley had already used Millender as PG3 this year, so that wasn't necessarily a surpise.

I don’t think they check with you either.

Not just U19 games, but the NBA Global Academy as well. He played combo guard, had pretty good defensive numbers, and generally hit some big shots. Not saying he's Ray Allen, but he'll do great elsewhere with playing time.

He looked great in that summer world championship tournament. I think the injury at the start of season derailed his chance. Had he been healthy when Braylen missed those games at the start he might have had a chance to prove he deserved time. UConn also had 9 pretty solid players this year. It was a tough rotation to crack.
I do not know who, but one of our compadres here noted that the comp of players on that tournament may not be "apples to apples" to our system. That take was splendid. The kid will do okay, but not in our system. And that is okay. I watched that tourney, and he was ball dominant, creating shots with his craftiness. At UConn, we create shots with movement and constant action. Not an ideal fit.

And yet we were begging for someone to step up and create. Have to have both skills.

Eh. I bet he doesn’t.

I always thought he would get real playing time his junior year. Not sure that is a victory lap. Just being realistic. Unfortunately in today’s college basketball unless you are a 5 star/OAD you should probably go to a lower level school and then transfer up.
That will be the trend in this era. If your not a legit top 10 player any 2nd team all conference/ or 2 year starter will get equal if not stronger looks. My fear is that mid majors are now AA clubs for bigger schools. Fairfield, Yale, central will just be feeders for us and Nc central and high point fir Duke Nc and state.

I guess Hurley, Murray and Kimani saw something and they decided to offer him. It’s possible whatever they saw did not show in practice or games.

Okay.

So why is he going to be successful somewhere else? I don't get the stupid posts declaring he's got talent and he will be good at another spot. Sure, he may get more minutes....but under worse coaching, lesser facilities, against worse opponents and in a much worse offense.

Might be going to Boston with Luke. I think it was Luke who raved about Furphy.

Furphy looked out of his league every time I saw him play.
Not fair, was injured early and never saw the floor. He was Australia best player in international games. He will be very good with some development time
