Hey freescooter, I was going to let this thread die a natural death if possible. But since it hasn't....

First, to accuse Boatright defenders of being racist in the context of NCAA and pro rules which prohibit predominantly black males (and their families) from benefiting financially as much as possible from their athletic talent is the height of absurdity.

Second, your suggestion that UConn or any pro-Boatright party's failure to say "we did nothing wrong. this is persecution" is probative of anything...at all...as they await an adjudication by an absolutist, arbitray power is equally absurd.

You would have made an excellent Stalinist functionary back in the day.

If it looks like poop and smells like poop it's still poop. It doesn't matter who's campus it's on.

Big Ern,
It is hard to tell exaclty who did what in this since nobody is really saying. But come on. Rose isn't just some friend. he was the coach, th ebrother of an NBA star who had been the subject of an NCAA scandal, and the subject of one himself. This wasn't just the local mailman from the neighborhood coaching kids in his days off. He apparently paid for more than 1 airline ticket. This wasn't some $350 violation (you can get a ticket from Chicago to Hartford for well under $400) He also might have been involved in this more recent incident/incidents as well. And to try and ignore the fact that the guy who at least paid for the tickets and has been involved in NCAA violations before was Boatright's advisor won't cause them to look at this more closely is just to ignore the real world. I get that you want Boatright to play. I do too. I do think that he is getting a raw deal and so is UCONN because of the behavior of the people who supposedly were looking out for him. Rose and his mother, maybe some others but we don't know that yet and might never know it, are the ones I'm ticked at. Because both should have known better. And don't give me any racist/sexist twaddle about his mother not knowing any better. I think she could have and should have known the rules. i suspect she was perfectly happy to get whatever bennies she could from her son's "fame." And Rose, given his and his brother's history also could have and should have known what he could and couldn't do for a prospect.

One final point is this. Nobody has a right to play college baksketball. so if she and rose wanted to make money off of Ryan they should have advised him to play overseas, or in the D-league, where people get paid for playing basketball. When they said go play at UCONN they chose to play according to the NCAA rules.

Although I don't agree with most of your arguments, I found them to be an interesting read.

They were interesting until you, IMO, went over the top when you said:

"I think she could have and should have known the rules. i suspect she was perfectly happy to get whatever bennies she could from her son's "fame."

Do you know her? I seriously doubt it.

But you have insulted her and Ryan by making a suggestion like that.

I really do hope that you are man enough to apologize to Ryan and especially to his mother.

Peace,

John Fryer

I'm the conspiracy theorist, in a thread that talks about the NCAA taking this round about effor to use Boatright's mother's actions to somehow "punish" Calhoun for beating the system in landing Drummond...Wow!
I despise conspiracy theories, but the NCAA has been known to target schools it has a beef with before - if they are actually going after Calhoun, it really wouldn't be as a big of a shock as you're making it out to be.

Granted this is the most extreme example, didn't Tarkanian get a few mill after he sued the NCAA for this exact thing?

Which school did they target? Whcih coach? Yes they did "target" Tarkanian. They got sued and endup up paying him $2.5 million to settle out of court after their lawyer told them they had no shot if it went to the jury. His comments went something to the effect that "we ran the case by 5 seperate mock juries and we lost every single time." If a similar case came to court today they would end up paying the coach $25 million given how much salaries increased (the Tark's highest was something like $125,000). Not even the NCAA is dumb enough to take that risk.

Bottom line here is that the NCAA wouldn't even be looking into this case unless someone told them, mostlikely with at least some evidence, that Boatright's family got extra benefits. That, not a desire to "get" UCONN is why they got involved. If they got the same complaint about Harkless, they'd be looking at his records. For that matter, if Boatright had been attending Kentucky, they'd be dealing with the same thing. And UCONN fans would be posting about how slimey Calipari is yet again!

So John,
Given that my take on the situation seems to be pretty close to what the NCAA reported, I really hope you're man enough to apologize to the NCAA, and maybe even me.

Peace, Love & Grooviness,
FS
