I can't believe people fall for this stuff. We are supposed to be upset about what exactly?

I worked a part-time job once where I got to be behind the scenes at Gampel. A couple years ago, the women's team played UCF in the NCAA tournament at Gampel. The women survived late and were fortunate to win the game.. The UCF coach came around the corner after the game, threw her jacket across the hall, and started screaming expletives about how the refs always save them (UConn). As their team and staff were waiting near the locker room I heard every conspiracy theory you could name excusing the loss as well as the bold prediction that UConn wasn't even that good and would lose their next game (they made the championship that year).

Most of these coaches are total phonies when the camera isn't on them.

In a tournament where 90% of the games are not even competitive anymore due to super conferences, super teams via NIL/transfer portal, SEC/Big Ten money advantage, Hurley is the only thing keeping us in the game. If he's too competitive and takes losses hard is the WORST thing about him, I'll take it.

then it's embarrassing. I'm not big on moving to a new league, but we all know that UConn was blackballed because certain people hated Calhoun. And I never saw a calhoun act like a child.

Hurley's stupid temper tantrums aren't doing the team any good.

He did win two championships. They might be doing some good.

.-.
Seeing the emotion on Hurleys face and in his voice after the game, don’t know how you can’t love this guy as UConn’s coach. He’s all in on the players, and I suspect most are all in on him too.

He’s got some swagger, he speaks his mind, and he’s imperfectly perfect.

Team went down swinging and I credit Hurley and his staff for the gameplan. A couple baskets drop and we’re talking 3-Peat again.

Who knows what changes are coming.

Sucks losing. But what doesn’t suck is knowing you’ve got Hurley leading the charge. Next year will be fun!

Just saying that I see why and like when Hurley and the players take losses hard. I want a coach who expects to win every game. They are competitors, work at their tails off year round.
I would expect every coach and player in the country to take losses hard.

blaming the refs for a loss isn't exactly taking a loss hard.

blaming the refs for a loss isn't exactly taking a loss hard.
He did not blame the loss on the refs. That is your characterization. He criticized the refs for favoring Florida in the second half. The box score and the stats back him up. I am certain he congratulated and credited Florida for the win. You want him to congratulate the refs too?

ALERT: National championship winning sports coach does not handle losing well!!!
Can you imagine if there were cameras everywhere at all times to catch everything Knight, Smith, K, Calhoun, Roy, etc. said from like the 1980s to early 2000s?

This is a non-story. People react in the moment. Hurley is usually quite graceful with opposing players and coaches. Sometimes he's not his best self with fans. In the hallway, in the immediate sting of a hard loss in which two seniors and potentially other championship players have played their last game? C'mon. Just pay attention to what he said like 5 minutes later when he had a chance to reflect.

On Thursday on the way to open practice, a rock destroyed my windshield. I looked at my 10 year old son, who was the reason we went to practice, and said " we ain't leaving without a signature now". Fast forward, and Hurley is walking out the tunnel with wife and son, my son yells out " coach Hurley can you sign my basketball?!". Hurley was already past my son on the way to the court. He stops, leaves his family, and not only signs my sons ball, but chats him up. He legitimately is the best coach in America. I love watching ppl hate on him. They don't know him. He's a good dude. I was proud when I told him he's the best coach in the county. His reply? " i appreciate that brother"
We UConn fans know how good he is, how committed and hardworking. This loss kills him. Who cares more than he does? Who tries harder?
Let the detractors yap, don’t pay attention.

Genuine question to all of you who love this behavior and don’t see anything wrong with it: how do you teach your children to act and behave?

I have a strong suspicion that the people that are fine with this behavior are the same lunatics that scream at the refs themselves during their kids travel soccer game.

Lame. People have emotions.
Most of us will never know the pressure to compete at this level and what it takes day in and day out. This isn’t a participation trophy contest.

Losing on this stage, having mics and cameras in your face hoping to catch something like this is just where we are as a society.

I smell a subtle troll trying to tread on here lightly.

Anyone who has ever played a sport knows this.

Insert coach K's infamous "you killed us" after the 2004 game. Thamel: Calhoun's gamble pays off late

Hurley’s constant outbursts are not normal and not something the guys you listed do as often as he did. It’s not some new age thing.

Yes, it’d be nice if people could pay attention to what he said 5 minutes later but it’s his own fault he couldn’t have an ounce of self control by unnecessarily blaming the refs on his walk out.

That is entirely his fault.

Edit: Bob Knight definitely had those outbursts and he’s well known for them. The cameras caught everything lol

I was sucker punched by a player while reffing basketball and I didn't whine about the "outburst" or hold some personal vendetta. These refs should be able to handle mild cursing.

Genuine answer: We live in a country where most everything/everyone is fake, most people are pandering frauds, lack loyalty, and people go out of their way telling the world how "hard" they work or how "busy" they are.

So I teach my kid to seek out the people that are high achievers and real. Real people have gasp warts and perceived flaws. Maybe I am fortunate that my twelve year old understands these things and can engage the lost art of critical thinking. She sees a coach that is 100% all in, loyal to his players and fanbase, and grinds every single day to get incrementally better. She has also seen the madman, and is relatively indifferent about it, it's not like I go around telling her that behavior is virtuous.

Maybe the lesson to you should be that a person can't be everything to everyone. Hurley's dynamic with Andrew/Andrea, the assistant coaches and the players, and of the fanbase is the only thing I need to see to know he's a great man. If you are "everyone's cup of tea" you probably don't stand for much, at the risk of offending someone, somewhere.

It's a product of how he grew up and what kind of competitor he is. It's clear he's done a ton of work on himself which is why his reaction 5 minutes later is generally much more palatable, but his initial spur of the moment reaction harkens back to his primal instincts -- the man he was raised to be by his relentlessly competitive father. He talked about this in the 60 minutes profile.

The other thing is... it's easy for us to sit on our couches and Monday morning qb his behavior. But it's this unparalleled competitive nature that makes him who he is.

It makes me uncomfortable how he always talks about basketball plays as being 'life or death' because it's not life or death at all. It's just a game. But that's clearly the key to his success. I personally think it's remarkable how much work he's put in to better himself as a human and address some of his childhood traumas. Beyond his viral outbursts, it's clear that he has a lot of humility and is seemingly a pretty fun guy to be around. Self-deprecating, thoughtful, funny.

Some of his antics do come off as childish and unprofessional, but at least he dresses well. I'll take a coach who pushes the boundaries on conduct over all these mild-mannered, mature guys who dress like bums. He is the basketball coach and not the chancellor of ethics, after all. Just look presentable and try not to fight any fans and I'm sure the school's good name will survive any foul language. They didn't have iphones back when Jim Calhoun was coaching.

Jim Calhoun lost his dad at 15 but I’m suppose to feel bad for Hurley because his who was the best HS coach in Jersey raised him to be competitive?

He’s 50 and suppose to be molding young men, not himself. It is not that hard to shutup and walk down a tunnel after your first tourney loss in 3 years.

We don’t have to talk about the childhood trauma of a grown suppose to be leader of men to excuse it.

it has nothing to do with the rest being able to handle it.
