Today I got the chance to watch practice which ran from about 930 to 1130 which consisted mostly of scrimmaging. Here is what I thought about it

1. Don't sleep on Amida! IMO he was the best big man at practice. He talked on D, ran the floor and finished on the offensive end. Further more he got quite a few blocks. Wouldn't be surprised at all if he starts. I know this might be surprising to some.

2. Shabazz is a leader. Saw him giving a lot of advice to the freshman throughout practice.

3. Boat and Bazz are focused more on distributing rather than scoring as much. Bazz especially tried to get others involved and played as a pure PG.

4. Terrance Samuel is legit. A pass first PG who is a lockdown defender...but can't shoot.

5. Deandre seems like he will have a solid year. Getting better at finishing around the cup.

6. K Facey ran the floor and got many rebounds yet still has a very long way to go. He disappeared on the offensive end. reminded me of a slightly more polished version of Phil Nolan last year
7. Rodney Purvis was not impressive. Floated around the three point line missing nearly every shot he took.

This was just one practice so don't buy too much into what im saying. This is what I saw

I will also paste my DogManian review here because it will likely be missed by some in the other thread:

The practice was a lot of fun to watch, especially because KO made it into primarily a 4 quarter, 8:00 minute per quarter, scrimmage. There was some drills and stretching early on, but who cares about that, right? KO came over and addressed the crowd early on and again near the end: spoke about the “Three E’s” (um, energy, enthusiasm, and effort, I think) and he will continue to participate in the Calhoun Walk/Ride in the future.

The biggest news, or what appeared to be news at the beginning, may or may not be real news. To start the first scrimmage, the white team was the “first team” with Bazz, Boat, DD, as well as Tyler and Niels. Tyler only played a short while before Amida came in and Amida played much more overall. This was the main unit for the first 2 quarters, with the Blue team consisting of Omar, Samuel, Purvis, Kromah, Phil N., and Leon.

However, after halftime, the First Team (as indicated by the team with Bazz, Boat, and DD) included Omar and Nolan. So, make of that what you will, but my impression was that Omar did not look happy and I think that Niels is ahead of him at this time. This is a guess. The whole squad seemed very serious and there was almost no fooling around or having fun. On impressive thing was the intensity of the defensive play by everyone. The outside shooting was not great for the most part. DD made some nice 3’s in the last quarter and Niels made some early shots. Others certainly made some shots, but not a high percentage was shot overall.

The last quarter was a mixed squad with Boat and Bazz on different teams. Boat hit a big 3 to give his team a 3 point lead as time was winding down. Bazz brought the ball up and took a somewhat deep 3 to tie, but it was “close but no cigar.”

The biggest surprise was the play of Amida B. He played a lot of minutes and generally played pretty well. He had about 2 or 3 blocks in a short stretch of the last quarter (getting 2 of Rodney’s shots). He competes for rebounds, not quite strong enough to secure them at times, but more comfortable with contact than Hasheem was when he arrived. Everyone there was impressed by AB. On the other side, Kentan played relatively little and was not very noticeable. Based on what we saw, Amida will be in the rotation and Kentan may not be this year if today’s practice is an indication. Tyler got relatively few minutes and did not do too much when in. Was wondering if the few minutes was related to his needing to work his way out of the doghouse.

Niels looked very good and did show signs of playing with more confidence and being looked to by his peers to do more. Played smart, quicker to shoot, very good defense, good hands. He made one really good defensive play against Kromah, anticipating his move, getting to the spot ahead if him, and causing the ball to be turned over without causing a foul. KO called out praise loudly to NG on that play and did not do much of that during the scrimmage.

Boat was looking to pass more, seemed to be playing slower and more in control. He was open and shot the ball pretty well at times. It was good to see he and Bazz playing well together.

Bazz did not shoot very much overall, looking to pass. He thread the needle a number of times with passes through defenders to a man just barely open on the inside. He looked like a player who was in control and was going to get the ball to who he wanted. He has a great handle. He was about the only one to try some razzle-dazzle a couple of times, with a couple of smiles afterward.

Deandre played pretty well early on, but was more noticeable at the end of the last quarter when he was hitting open 3’s. I would have liked to see him drive the ball successfully to the hoop more.

Omar was handling the ball more on the blue team, did pretty well but certainly not in the league of Bazz and Boat with the ball. He was aggressive and played well in the latter part of the scrimmage. Did not hit shots he often does make, but was close.

Rodney did not stand out as I thought he might have. He was quick to shoot on several occasions when it might or would have been better to pull it out and be more patient to find a better shot. He had one breakaway dunk where he just soared and was WAY up in the air with ease. He made some good passes but did not look like a PG with the ball. His handle is not that tight at this point.

Phil Nolan played okay but did not stand out. He competed for boards and he and Amida were battling each other for rebounds, with neither one seeming to have a clear edge. Phil has a very nice stroke on his shot from the foul line in, but did not get many shots at all. Not a “claiming the position” kind of performance in my eyes. Based just on this practice, I could see Amida getting as much time or more than Phil as the season progresses. Time will tell.

Terrence gave very good effort, seemed to play more early in the first quarter than later on. He made some good passes, but was not overly effective (remember, the D was quite intense).

Lasan Kromah was out early shooting and was not making a good percentage then or during the game. He is very athletic and did some nice things….rebounds, driving the ball, good effort on D.

Leon played quite a bit in the earlier quarters, but did not do a whole lot that I noticed. He looks outside the rotation to me.

Kentan moves very well, but did not play that much. Right now, he does not look to be in position for much in the way of minutes if today was any indication. Amida seems to be much more likely to see significant minutes. Who knows. Near the end of the last scrimmage, there was some kind of outburst where a couple of people said that Kentan kicked or threw a chair and got kicked out of the practice. No one knew why he was upset. I did see him walking off the floor by himself before practice was over and he did not return.

One nice thing to see was KO getting on the whole blue team at one point, showing that he can be tough when needed. He also came out another time and really called out one side to show more energy. He appeared to me to be clearly in charge. There were times when working on things where Coach Miller was the one doing most of the instruction. Ricky Moore came out and worked with players on specific points to correct one thing or another, but did so with what seemed like a very positive approach. Karl Hobbs was vocal at times while coaching in the scrimmages.

getting more and more excited about Amida, its one thing for a guy to look good in one practice but now we have Rothstein, Fraschilla, and several posters who have seen him on seperate occasions and have liked what they saw. KO and Coach Miller have also praised him for what he's shown so far. Still a long ways to go but it would be a pretty nice coup to get a potential starting C or someone who can contribute positive minutes from someone who was a relative unknown in HS. It would also show that KO might have that ability to spot diamonds in the ruff like JC.

Unlike past years I have not made it up to a practice yet, however I will go to the exhibition on Wednesday. I see points primarily coming from 5 guys[Bazz, Boat, Daniels Calhoun & Griffey]. No surprise there. Where will the rebounds come from? If Bazz leads the rebounding again in many games that's a problem. I do agree the guy from Miami is the key.

I am excited about Amida also, but he has a lot to learn. At practice he had at least 4 fouls today. He needs to work on footwork and positioning. He was solid the last 5 minutes on the defensive end and ran the floor extremely well. He has the athleticism and length. If he can stay out of foul trouble he will see minutes. Not sure he starts at the beginning of the season though.

Did anyone else see Facey get kicked after kicking the chair. Not sure but I think he may have had dd when dd hit the 3. He wasn't within 10 feet. Frustration moment, but shows he cares.

I like our depth and athleticism.

Ollie called Olander out for having his hands on his knees about 5 minutes or so into the practice. I wonder why he's not in shape.

I was pretty far back up. My friend and I had our sneakers on in case Coach needed a couple more practice players.

Good to be prepared. It's also good to remember your medication. ;)

When exactly has Olander ever been in shape?

What can I add? First, I sat beside Stewart, aka Dogbreath2u who wrote a great recap. It was great having UConn talk with you twice this week. Once at Ollie's dinner, then Ollie's breakfast. Gees, I hope my wife's not reading this. By the way, I've attended these 4x now and miss the pizza.

Then we hooked up with Joe/aka Dove, Zls/Zac and UConnPuneet. I'm pretty sure the 5 of us could have done some damage in a scrimmage session, instead we hit the Co op. Prices weren't bad, selection was strong, but I made a rookie mistake. Olliewood tee. Check. New logo swag. Check. Fleece. Check. Car magnet. Check. Baby tee. Check. 25% off coupon, that came with my XL season tickets? Sitting in my office. I'm an idiot. I drowned my sorrows with a Husky Tracks hot fudge sundae at the Dairy Bar.

It's been a long day. What the hell do I remember that hasn't been said already? I suppose I can make a little up if you weren't there right? Dove/Zls seem to have a plan for Gampels Italian cushion tiles. Let them continue peeling and the inner dome will be completely silver. Should look great.

Did I mention, they didn't have pizza today? Next the AAC logos, looked Huge on the floor. Frightening. Don't worry, some old fella said "we will be in a new conference in a couple years, cause we need new dorms." Made sense to me, let's shut down the Realignment board. We are good to go.

A few player thoughts. Every year I try to watch pieces of everyone's game but I'm usually drawn to one player. In years past it was Kemba, then DeAndre, and today it was Brimah. (Pic below) He looks like a praying mantis. He runs the floor beautifully, yet it's a mans body on a pair of chopsticks. I joked to Stew, he has the looongest arms I've ever seen. He could probably wear 7 wrist watches comfortably before his elbow. Very interesting player, active, and surprisingly nice touch. Made near 75% of his FT in one clip of about 20 taken. Looked like he belonged. Lots to learn.

Who else stuck out? How about Giffey. My favorite shooter, besides Bazz who should have a year that puts some $ in his account. Ollie said at the dinner, "practice so well, that you make me drive home thinking about how much playing time to give you." Definition- Giffey. We read about his solid Summer vs pros, while Omar who looked comfortable today was rehabbing. To me, edge Giffey. Plus with Niels you don't lose anything with shooting, D, intensity, or heady play. Ollie will be day dreaming on the way home.

Purvis/Facey- neither filled it up today, but both looked strong physically. Rodney looks like a pit bull, and although Kentan's legs are small, he had guns for arms. Call it wiry strong. He can add weight or be DeAndre like & bouncy @ the 4, I suppose. Ollie's choice.

Everyone looked healthy, remember we were the walking wounded at the end of last year. Tolksdorf has slimmed down, and Samuels is confident w/ the dribble vs Boat/Bazz. Nice vision, and above ave FT shooter. Lasan has a nice frame. Glides a bit. Shot wasn't dropping but his experience will help our depth.

I ended up at Pepes for dinner. Who do I send the bill to?

It was fun to watch the practice and the Ollie-UConn Alumni Dinner with you, Gem....I'm Tom, by the way...there was a Stewart at the dinner (plus a lot of Mikes).

Look at that, 2 dates & I still got your name wrong. I apologize. Got mixed up from the dinner.

I don't see how he starts over Omar or deandre. If Omar is physically ready he plays the 3.

It was one practice but Neils was getting KO's wrath to hustle more and go to the basket with shots when underneath. I was hoping to see a more vocal captain but he was still the lead by example guy. His shot looked great. Omar had an angry expression a lot through practice. I would be surprised if he didn't start.

Just because he's angry doesn't mean he should start.......if Giffey is outplaying him in practice then he plays.......can't surrender to a player being mad and having facial expressions Doveman. That's one spot I could see where it's up in the air. Love Giff coming off the bench but that's a selfish reason from my end so I hope Omar earns the 3 spot because long run it makes us better.......
