Interesting article on Maryland's move to the ACC

I think this proves it .... HIGHER ED (*like upstater) bitches are just like those we often have on here @ the Boneyard.

I noticed this article this morning and thought it might be of interest.

http://chronicle.com/article/Maryland-Emails-Reveal/143455/

That article makes it seem like Brit Kirwin was pushing for the move to the Big Ten more than Wallace Loh. That's the first time it's been presented that way. I love the part about the fans. Maryland fans are the most obnoxious in the ACC. They are very similar to West Virginia fans. One of the regents hopes that they will behave better in the Big Ten. That's priceless.

This paragraph:

"For some time I have been bothered that these 'traditional rivalries' have provoked toxic reactions from abusive language at the games to riots and car burnings after victories," Mr. Shea wrote the chancellor. "Maybe the most significant result will be that we have disrupted the fan base and that a new base, equally dedicated to excellence and success but more civilized, will take its place."

The only thing I got out of the emails was that "Sap" and "Brit" are probably or want to...

I'm surprised they didn't redact John Swafford's e-mail address. Just sayin'

Eh, ONE, Boards of Trustees's are political appointees. Not Higher Ed. people. The top guy Shea is a commercial lawyer. TWO, if the President could end it all, he should. Just bomb it all.

Yesterday is dead and gone....but it was interestng reading.

It does look like there was a shanghai operation going on...a lot of secrecy, no real input beyond a handful...

Shows you that a couple of guys in power can pull off a coup....

But I sure do not begrudge the Terps. Maryland needed a new start...destitute, cutting sports teams, and with a football team that was sliding further into mediocrity, something had to be done.

Change can be a kick start.....

Hey, any chance you and your ACC brethren want to keep Maryland? We have enough fan craziness in the B1G. We can take UConn as #14 instead ;)

Maryland and NC State fans (other then Miami which is another tale all together) are the ones that seemed to be difficult to deal with on their home turf...drunken young folks screaming F bombs in your face...

Now I am a southern guy and our culture is a little different...but any man coming up to your wife and screaming ugly things in her face is speaking universal southern for "somebody, please knock me down". I have, once in the past, been escorted to my rental car in the parking lot and listened to the game on the car radio as I left the area...

I could not agree more - I've never been to a more unpleasant place than NC State. If anything was ever close, it was Maryland.

NC State was very ugly - just a strange, strange vibe that got worse as they got drunker.

In general, most stadiums are very friendly. I've been to Boston College, Virginia Tech, West Virginia, Wake and a few others and I don't remember anything other than the fans there being happy to share their space with visitors.

I've been to Auburn, Kansas, and Nebraska for games.

Nothing beats tailgating in Lincoln if you are a visiting fan. They treat you like family and give you a ton of beer and food wherever you walk.

Interesting. I've never had any issue in Raleigh at Carter Findley Stadium with Wolfpack fans. It might be because I know so many of them because there are tons of NC State grads in Richmond, and I go to the games there with NC State fans and tailgate with them. I do the same in Blacksburg at Virginia Tech and in Winston-Salem at Wake Forest. I've now done it with Miami Hurricane friends of mine too at Sun Life Stadium (I wouldn't dare at the Orange Bowl). I've had no trouble with any of these fan bases. At UNC we usually go to Top of the Hill or to the Four Corners Grill before games. The stadium's in the woods with nowhere to tailgate.

Maryland fans in College Park on the other hand can be trouble. You have to be careful wearing your team's colors, and very careful identifying your vehicle with the opposing school.

Why? What types of things routinely happen to fans of visiting teams when visiting College Park? It must be REALLY awful for you to take to a UConn message board to talk about the dangers of Maryland's campus.

You've done a lot of disparaging of Maryland without providing any proof of College Park being this dangerous place to visit. I get it. You're a Virginia fan and Virginia fans think Mr. Jefferson's university is the ultimate in everything and that Maryland is the scum of the earth. But if you're going to compare Maryland fans to West Virginians and claim CP is this wholly violnt place where you have to watch your back, at least provide some warrants to these claims.

What planet have you been living on? Do you know anything about fans in College Park, Maryland? Their horrible behavior is not new news or any secret. The article from the original poster talks about riots.

It's so bad they had a task force to try to clean it up in 2004:

They can't even refrain from cussing out children:

I've personally gone to a football game with a friend in his RV, and came out to find that sand was put in the gas tank of the RV at a UVA game. What more do you need? More riots? Car burnings? Fires? Arrests?

I'll give you that burning a car is better than a couch like West Virginia fans do. I bet those Maryland West Virginia games are a riot so to speak.

I was commenting about the quote from the Maryland head of the board of regents commenting that he hoped the move to the Big Ten would help clean up this stuff with the Maryland fans. I thought it was priceless. The article posted is the topic of this thread, and bad Maryland fan behavior is well known and no shock to anyone here.

I always had a blast at NC State games, but my opinion is a little biased. College Park can be interesting. Like Fenway during the 90s.

Maryland and State fans ARE the absolute worst in the ACC, hands down.

I put the over/under at three years before B1G fans label the Terps as the league's worst fanbase.
