Ines and The 'Zags | The Boneyard

Ines and The 'Zags

She looked fantastic in the first half, wasn't quite as good after half time.

In tonight's season opener, Gonzaga beat Montana 82-69 and Ines Bettencourt played 33 minutes and scored 16 points with 5 assists, 2 steals and just 2 turnovers. Great start! Many of their games on shown live on ESPN+.
I'll be wearing my white UCONN hoodie sweatshirt today! # 21 INES!!! Go Zags!! Note
also, that Ines had the most minutes for the ZAGS: 33 minutes.

.-.
You have to remember to add the little hat thingy on Inês. She was the luckiest kid on the planet, or at least in the Azores. Turned out she's a pretty good guard. She got some minutes with UConn, I wouldn't have a problem if she got a few more.

Always glad to see a Uconn transfer do well. It shows they absorbed the Geno and Chris coaching.. Another that comes to mind is Natalie Butler. She did well the whole yesr, except I forgot the school.GO TRANSFERS.......ecept against Uconn!!

Butler had a great year as a grad student at George Mason. Another thing to remember is that she had a sensational freshman year at Georgetown before transferring to UConn. As a first-year Hoya she was BE Rookie of the Year and 2nd team All-BE. Averaged about 14 ppg and 13.5 rpg. Was one of the top rebounders in the nation. Unfortunately things didn’t work out that well at UConn.

Do you know if she managed to play overseas? I'm under the impression she did, at least a while.

If interested, the game can be found on YouTube. Per Nan, I won't paste a link. Also, the channel indeed has a foreign name, so I guess beware.

Watching the game it was obvious that the announcers hadn't planned on talking about Bettencourt and were focusing on the freshmen but she was obviously the best pg on the team last night. The only odd thing was that UConn was never mentioned while I was watching.

It's good to see Inês flourishing. It looks like she's going to be their starting pg. As @nwhoopfan noted, she seemed to flag a bit in the second half. I guess 33 mins is a lot for her... for now. Soon enough her stamina will be able to carry for entire games.

Also, the second PG, Turner I think, had a good game, but seems like more of an SG than a PG, and Inês had to bail her out a few times. It looks like the Zags will have a solid backcourt this season.

I'd be curious to hear an interview with her on the similarities and differences between Gonzaga and UConn. I'd also love to see Geno schedule a game against them before Inês moves on. It would be a fan favorite, and a player favorite, too, I bet.

I only watched the first half but on the replay i saw the announcers were effused in their praise of Ines, the role she will play and how UConn prepared her.

Sorry you didn’t hear that…

Ines knew she was sacrificing a huge amount of playing time in saying yes to UConn. Sure, she got wonderful training in the basketball capitol of the world, but players want to play. News of her performance for the Zags was great news and may it continue through the season and beyond. Thanks @Brad Palmer for bringing us this happy news.

At the start the focus was on the freshmen and their play. They started mentioning Bettencourt when she was the leading scorer at one point. In the second half they started saying nice things. It was natural that a junior transfer who didn't play much for 2 years wouldn't produce high expectations with the announcers. I missed the UConn references.

Gonzaga had a couple of players out, including a post but from what I saw Inez will be the pg this year.

UConn was mentioned a lot early on and with glowing implications. I was pleasantly surprised how good she looked. She certainly proved she belongs on the floor. Disclaimer: I only watched the first half as to my mind the game was not going to be close.

They’ll be on ESPN2 Sunday vs Stanford. A rare chance for us east coasters to see the Zags.
If you have a package with ESPN+ almost all of their games are available.

the Coach also explained why Ines was well prepared to take on that role.....practicing against UConn players, the national program participation, etc.

She could have added that Ines saved a couple of wins for UConn as a freshman, so her mettle has been proved.

I think Ines' chance to play at a really good program like Gonzaga was due to her being on the bench at Uconn. If she had gone to that small school in FL, she would have gotten minutes but never had the exposure Uconn gave her.

True, but let's not forget that in her freshman year, when circumstances forced her to play crucial minutes, she performed admirably to preserve a couple of wins for UConn. Her performance shone the spotlight on her

Not so good today. Stanford jumped all over Gonzaga right out of the gate and it's just getting worse in the second half. Nobody from GU having a particularly good game.

I watched some of the game. Really watched for Ines. So happy she's at a school where she's getting to play a lot. But she really wouldn't get any playing time for most high level programs. A mid-major is the perfect place for her!! A solid player and wish her the best!
