It used to be the Head of Neurosurgery at the UConn Medical Center but Geno's recent raise must have put him a bit higher on the pay scale.

Ah, found this. Dr. Onyiuke is the third highest paid public employee after JC's retirement.

Geno earned his salary long before he received it. For years he filled the Hartford Civic Center, the parking lots, the restaurants, the concession stands etc. He brought in millions to Gampel, the HCC and CPTV so much so that SNY picked up UConn WBB and UConn is making millions on that. How many years did it take before Genos salary caught up to what the state brought in. Over 10 years. He deserves what he is getting paid because he earned it. Talk about creating jobs. Geno has done his share.

What's depressing about it?

since you asked, apparently it's not for those who think that coaches should be the highest paid state employees, not to mention being the highest paid university employees. i think it's bass ackwards. but that's the way it is in this society of ours.

I suppose. I just don't get depressed when talented people make money. That actually makes me kind of happy. Knowing if you work hard and are good at something you can make a lot of money doing it. Just doesn't seem depressing to me.

Now if it was someone who doesn't actually have any talent, then yea, I suppose that could be depressing.

Good post so far as it goes. Now here's a suggestion:

Wherever the name Geno is found, replace with "players" and wherever the pronoun "he" is located insert "they".

In the job market and industry in which he works, of course Geno deserves it. Quite possibly far more than some of the other state-wide salary leaders. Consistent and long term success.

THAT SAID, my arguement is simply that I personally wish coaches salaries were not top figures in any state. Just as I wish star athletes earned a bit less. And, in some sense, that so many sports events are priced out of reach for the average joe (or, afforded at a cost to other areas of life).

I like college sports, I donate and attend and spend, but on some level I just cannot help but wonder what other "good" might be done with a portion of that money, instead of building a better stadium, paying a coach so well, etc.

Not really because without Geno and staff those players would not be at UCONN. They might be great but it would likely be someplace else and even if they were at UCONN it is unlikely they would be near as good as they have been. Your argument is largely a non argument.

When looking at athletes salaries I always consider it to be dispersement of funds and that it is always better that 700 have the wealth more than 30 or whatever the ratio is between owners and players in any given pro sport.
