That is what I would do in the short term. I really hope KO does not but I think having plan 2 might have to be in the thought process. I believe both JC and Ray would do it.

As much as this can be called "stupid", Ray is much like KO in terms of preparation, fitness and professionalism. He may not be a good coach though. Plus, he has no experience.

However, I am in the camp that KO isn't going anywhere for a long time. In fact, if I didn't come to this board, I'd never worry about it at all.

Disagree with the Ray Allen part but I'd love to hear better options than Calhoun at this point in time.

I know I shouldn't post but I can't help but ask why are we spending brain energy on this. JC is not coming back to coach, nor should he.

Its a new day at UConn, and that's okay and how life happens. Ollie is our future and is contracted to coach.

As for a backup plan, there are assistants who are capable of becoming interim's while the search is on, which by the way JC would be involved in.

Honestly I think Caron Butler might be an even better back up choice than Ray Allen

The back up plan might be JC plus fill in the blank with the former UCONN player. If Ollie leaves JC will probably publicly lobby to go this route and he will be difficult to turn down. Warde would lose his job if he turned down JC and the guy he hires fails and loses UCONN's basketball alumni support in the process.

Bottom line there will be a lot of pressure on Warde to let JC pick the next coach again (it worked last time) and JC might pick himself.

I wonder if KU fans speculate that Paul Pierce will be their next coach or if UNC fans speculate that Vince will be their next coach. Bizarre thinking, and that's not mentioning the idea that JC returning would be anything but a nightmare.

KU fans do speculate, and they have already chosen Danny Manning.

BTW Roy Williams is a graduate of North Carolina and learned his trade from Dean Smith, so you just defeated yourself.

Let's not kid ourselves, KO not coming back is the nightmare. Anything that happens after that is just back to crazy town and all bets are off.

Hey everybody, if KO leaves let's bring in a 72 year old with many well known prior health problems that every other school will use to negatively recruit against us. Then we'll bring in a guy who's made in excess of 180 million dollars playing basketball who has never stated much interest in coaching.

You don't get it. I'm not going to respond to you so just think about the differences in the guys I brought up and you brought up.

The best players don't necessarily make the best coaches. Are there any Hall of Fame NBA players who have gotten in to college coaching? A couple of NBA coaches, sure - but college? All the never-ending recruiting, and the AAU handlers, and the babysitting, and the NCAA rulebook. Much easier to just put in some game plans for 12 grown men and clock out. Maybe there is, but it's very rare. Ray wouldn't need the money to deal with the always on the road coaching lifestyle, he has a young son with health issues, he's an OCD personality who would probably be frustrated as hell trying to get 18-20 year olds to do things correctly, and knowing stuff and knowing how to teach it are two different things. I doubt Kansas and North Carolina fans are looking at Paul Pierce and Vince Carter as head coaching material right now (whoops, others made that point when I wasn't looking)

Manning is the head coach at Wake Forest, after showing some real success at Tulsa. Williams was very successful as the head coach at Kansas. Allen has 0 coaching experience.

Here's a better idea: hire someone with coaching experience, rather than assuming that Ray Allen will be a good coach just because he was a great player.

You saw this thread and focused on Ray Allen, I saw this thread and focused on JC coming back with another ex player in the wings. You pick the ex players name, maybe its Steve Pikiell.

Based on JC's statements during the tournament he will want his job back if KO bolts, bank on it, and I will be in the camp that says JC gets what he wants, he has never steered us wrong.

I saw this thread and read the title, which suggested that Ray Allen should be the long-term replacement if Ollie bolts. That's a terrible idea.

I don't want to bring in a coach that's going to be a lame duck from the outset. Calhoun was and is a great coach, one of the very best ever, but literally every year we'd be worrying about retirement. Can't we hire a coach who has successful head coaching experience?
