I just saw a video of Hurley talking about the early season tournaments, and what he said was a bit odd.

paraphrasing: "I'm not interested in playing in one again, at least if I'm still at UConn."

If he gets an offer to coach in the pros, and leaves, I'll wish him all the luck in the world. I'm assuming that is what he was referring to. I can't imagine why he would ever leave for any other college position. There is no better college coaching position better than UConn. The only exception would/could be coaching where he played for four years (Seton Hall?).

I took it to mean he was speaking for himself, not for the university. He has sufficient clout that it won't happen while he's coaching. But he doesn't want to poison relationships between the university and Maui organizers.

Dan's a leader, he takes responsibility for things, even if he's not solely responsible.

I don't read it as such at all. Just a thoughtless expression to me. He doesn't like 3 game MTEs. He's a superstitious person, not shocked after getting b-slapped in Maui

I had already predicted he's not going back to Maui. He took it one step further

Danny’s still worried about getting fired. lol
Doubt he’d ever consider Seton Hall. They can’t compete in today’s environment.

Yeah I caught that little phrase....my thought is that in 3 day pre-season tourney while at UConn you're getting 3 teams best shot against a national power.....so what's the benefit to UConn (if like in Maui) we get stuck on the "loser" side and risk more loses to "lesser" programs that are geared up to play UConn. More beneficial for UConn to schedule 3 Home & Home games against other powers (UNC/Auburn).

Whereas if coaching at URI for example you relish these 3 game pre-season tournies because UNC isn't likely to schedule a Home/Home game with you. I don't think DH is leaving UConn anytime soon....it was a hypothetical to say not overly beneficial to UConn to play in these if lose first game and get stuck playing 2 games you don't want to play really. We went to Maui to play Auburn/ UNC/ Mich St not Colorado & Dayton.

I also took it as if he was jokingly saying if he's "still at UConn"... because he would get fired since team was playing so poorly.

We all know that's not the realty. Rest easy. We have a coach until an opportunity with an NBA comes that he can't pass up or decides to stop coaching altogether.

The bolded might be a reason he would do it. When in a different place in his life. Not right now.

If UConn won the tournament, he'd have no problem playing again in future years.

I have absolutely no idea what this is supposed to mean. They lost all three games in an event they were supposed to win. His response was that he never wants to play in such an event ever again.

Im not blaming Hurley for the losses. But these early season tournaments are an opportunity for a team to evaluate strengths/weaknesses and prepare for league play.

At face value, he seems to think the tournament was a waste of time.

Yeah I caught that reference. We are 9 games in and it feels longer than that with all the issues from Maui.

He made a comment that he was surprised by the reaction from everyone about his behavior in Maui.

Perhaps he has not liked the reaction of the fans and is growing tired of the negativity that we can all display

But that would be a bad take. The passion of this fan base in my opinion is one of the reason we were described as a sleeping giant to Calhoun before he took the job.

Who knows he is a very complex personality. But the way he hugged Samson and Mahaney kind of showed how much they have been talked about on social media and traditional media. He clearly loves his players.

It wasn't his response, since he was saying it before the tournament even started. Didn't we just have this discussion on here?

'I don't believe he said this before the tournament even started. How many of these early season tournaments has he coached/played in when it was in his team's best interest?

The idea that as a two time defending national champ, UConn had nothing to gain from playing in Maui, would be little more than shameful arrogance.

A future GOAT should want to play any team, anywhere.

Bottom line: Hurley is definitely a future HOF level coach. But he needs a coach of his own on how to speak to the press.

There are several reasons not to do a tourney like Maui. Primarily because Uconn doesnt get the financial benefit like it would in a home and home. And secondly there is no chance to coach after each game. So its almost like a waste of two games.

That changes absolutely nothing. When you lose all three games in a tournament you were supposed to win, you keep your mouth shut outside of thanking the hosts and giving credit to the winners.

Hurley's quote was after the tournament loses.
Well I can see this was a great use of my morning, thanks so much
