This is the correct take. Trying to squeeze out an extra 2 feet seems silly. The defenders have to have the ability to tackle. If you start your slide while they're in the process of making a tackle you cannot stop your momentum like that. I actually feel a lot of those penalties are unfair. I was pissed when Kenny Picket faked a slide and the defenders let up and he proceeded to run about 60 yards for a TD.
 
Hamms30 has it right IMHO. Slide late with tacklers in motion and they go over you. No where else for them to go. Getting your head bounced between the turf and a 200+ guys hip is gonna hurt, but nobodies trying to drop a hip on a head. A good portion of the targeting calls we do see come from the runner changing his head level too late for the tackler to compensate. I don't think people are baiting (or flopping for) targeting calls, but I do think it gets called way too often. You also end up with runners thinking the refs are protecting them when they should be protecting themselves.

Mora said he didn't know yet post game; haven't seen/heard a word since. I don't think they can roll him out Saturday though. Bad optics and liability issues prob enough to not play him.

I am guessing Evers will not play this week. Second head related injury in 4 weeks. Bye week coming up. So while I have no information it lines up about as perfectly as it can for that course of action.

This. The sliding rule can only protect you when you’re giving up yardage to protect yourself by sliding before people have already committed to clobbering you. Like NFL QBs routinely do. Throughout college, the slide is being used by QBs after they’ve gained as much yardage as they can to avoid a hit at the last minute. I side with the DBs on most of these.

Yes, the hit on Evers last week would have been a targeting at Maryland a month ago, but I disagreed with those calls as well. If you want protection you have to go down to avoid a hit in the future, not to avoid a hit that is already imminent and the defender is committed to.

As in any sport - next in line needs to step in and get the job done
JF has done that but what if he also goes down? Thats what I worry about the most.
Unless UConn is redshirting him, is the Texas Slinger ready to go at a moments notice?
 
When I heard on the radio that Evers went down, I was concerned about the season and momentum.Glad things are working out but losing key players can have a negative impact.

I'm not calling conspiracy kitty to weigh in, but no reporter asked if Evers was live and fully practicing (for either of the two NE questions) & taking actual reps rather than just being in good spirits out on the field with the team while he's resting his dome taking mental notes.

The inner lawyer in me (which I am not) is dying to ask a direct question on whether Nick took full physical reps with the 1s.

Mora has made it very clear that Nick is #1 and Joe is #2.

But Nick has to be in some sort of protocol. He left the game for a blow to the head. He sort of staggered around on the sideline. He never returned to the game. Even if it was not diagnosed as a concussion, it was a severe blow to the head.

In the old days, the trainer would ask the player what city he was in. If the player gave a correct answer, he was good to go. In 2024 they take it a bit more seriously. My guess, judging by Mora's past actions, if Nick can play, he starts.
 
Even if you believe (against all in-game evidence) that Evers is light years ahead of Fagnano, given Temple’s record, the fact that we have an off week next week and then our biggest home game of the year versus Wake, one would have to think that you’d let Fagnano play Saturday even if you’re dead set on starting Evers against Wake.

But as I was totally convinced Fagnano would start at Duke, WTF do I know.

I tend to agree. I personally feel like Evers > Fagnano, but our running game has been very strong (and even though Fagnano is inconsistent, he does have the ability to hit open players once he gets in rhythm). While I do think it's important for Evers to get more in game snaps, I think it just makes sense right now that Evers gets some extra down time/rest.

Listen to the actual press conference. He did NOT say Evers practiced today. He said he was AT practice, was smiling and looked good. Nobody even asked if he was in concussion protocol. And then when there was a follow up question, Mora danced around it: "I mean, he was out there, he had a great demeanor, and he's excited to keep improving". And yeah, when finally asked if he would be ready to go, Mora said, I don't if anyone will be ready until we get through the week.

I agree, I think this is just coach smokescreen. But I also thought Fagnano was gonna start against Duke, so I too many be way off.
 
What Mora actually said about Evers.

"He’s out there today, he’s great, looks good, he’s in great spirits, bright eyed, bushy tailed, looks good."
 
As long as he’s bushy tailed - that’s all that should matter, right? Let’s go!!!!!
 
I think it will be JF this Saturday and Evers starting against Wake if he is cleared to play.
