I just love the guy; great coach and funny too!

He spent 30 minutes with the CT media this morning. John A wrote a nice piece on Gary's comments about Kelsey Bone, her recruitment and her decision to transfer.

But some of his best stuff came when he was asked about stopping UConn’s star freshman Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis Tuesday.

“We’re not going to let her sub in the game,’’ Blair said. “We’re going to play our first five. (Auriemma’s) going to play his first five and nobody’s allowed to come in and sub in. That’s the way the game should be played. That’s in the contract. No, I’m just kidding. You can’t stop her.’’

Blair said he spent a couple of minutes prior to today’s conference call compiling a list of UConn’s greatest players. He put Mosqueda was right there at the top.

“ Here’s my list and I know I’ve missed some … This was done two minutes before the call,’’ Blair said. “(Sue) Bird, (Maya Moore), (Diana) Taurasi, (Tina) Charles, Lewis. How about the second team? (Renee) Montgomery, (Rebecca) Lobo and The Law Firm (Swin Cash, Asjha Jones, Tamika Williams). (Kalana) Greene on the third team. And I know I’m missing about five more, but this was done right before the call. I’ve even got Lewis all the way up there because that’s how good I think she’s going to be. I know I’m anointing her before she’s earned it and Geno will be mad at me because there’s too many great players that have earned their stripes at Connecticut. But I think she’s going to be that good.’’

Blair said he gave Cash, Jones and Williams the nickname “The Law Firm’’ when he faced UConn while he was the head coach at Arkansas at the Four In The Fall in San Jose, Calif. Nov. 14, 1998. The Huskies rolled to a 100-64 win.

“I came up with that name watching those three play because they were such great players and you could see how good they were going to be over the next few years,’’ Blair said.

Gary is a real gentlemen, a great coach, and very very funny. One of my favorites. He's headed back to the SEC, and maybe he will be recognized, finally, as the best coach in that conference. (although his defensive coach has to be regarded as maybe the best defensive specialist in the country)

Jim Fuller's blog also has some good stuff from the Blair interview. Nice comments from Gary on Geno. UConn fans are so lucky to have so much coverage of the team and opponents. http://elmcitytoeaglevillenhr.blogspot.com/

"I hope we handle it as well as Geno has handled it and Pat (Summitt) has handled it over the years," Blair said. "I realize the importance of being a champion and knowing how to act like a champion the following year. I have been around long enough, I have studied coaches, I have studied programs and really have admired how Geno has been able to handle all the fanfare that goes with what happens in Connecticut and being right there under ESPN and everything. He has done an amazing job. He deserves everything he has gotten, our Olympic coach, our President of the WBCA, he has done it all. The same thing with Coach Summitt, she has done it all with her thing. I am just a little dot on the horizon right now. I am a doggone old dot but I am a dot.

Gary is one of the good guys...and a breath of fresh air given the silliness that's otherwise been coming out of College Station. It's easy to see why his girls play hard for him.

It was great to see this gentleman finally get some national recognition. He's kind, he's funny, and he's a great competitor.

Ok, no one is supposed to be comparing Kaleena to Maya, but everyone is doing it. Boneyarders. Media. Opposing coaches. Oh well!
