3 Huskies make the Olympic team!!!!

Congrats to all 12...especially Dee/Breanna/Napheesa!

Beyond the USA team it's amazing how many former Huskies...uhh...no such thing...once a Husky always a Husky...
may be in Paris on other teams.

Can you name the other "possibles"?

They need to figure out a way to get Clark on the team, they need to milk the current adoration. Imagine all the merchandise sales she'll generate.

I strongly (and sadly) believe that by the next Olympics, all this love for her and women's basketball would be significantly reduced; most of the casual fans who jumped on the bandwagon following her will realize that she's not a superwoman, and that there are other players that are better than her.

Hopefully many of them stick around and make WNBA profitable and enable many of these fine women to make a decent living.

There was some article where it states CC was not chosen because of something along the lines of her crazy fans. According to the article, the people in charge of selecting the USA roster thought that her fans would go ape-crazy if she didn't get PT on a super stacked roster. Which honestly, is a valid concern.

Did you forget that Paige Bueckers is coming to the W next year? The hype around her even before college was insane. And it still remains as well.

There would be an uproar the likes of which has never been seen if they put Caitlin on that Team. Wouldn't be pretty; wouldn't be a good look.

I get what you are saying about the attention CC would bring, but it is NOT a question of adding CC, it is a question of who would she replace. It would be extremely disrespectful for any of these elite and experienced players to be replaced to gain some new viewers.

I'm sure it would gain attention, but for all the wrong reasons. There would be incredibly negative blowback.

Will there be noise about Diana?
You could make the case that she is near the bottom of this team's guard depth chart (even though she's probably going to start) BUT she's still a very high level player, brings unequaled experience and competative fire that other players respect. This will almost certainly be her last go at Olympic gold. She deserves to be there.

Still the leader.

It has been fairly obvious that due to the limited preparation time, historically the selection committees have valued existing instinctive chemistry among those who are currently performing well and satisfy a positional need:

Chelsea, Kelsey, Jackie, A’ja
DT, Kahleah, Britney
Sabrina, Breanna
Jewell [with Breanna]
Napheesa [with Breanna and coach Cheryl Reeve]
A. Thomas

Obviously, the selection committee thought the duo of Caitlyn and Aliyah is not yet worth 2 Olympic roster spots.

I believe Aliyah would be on Team Canada?

Before this season started I would have penciled Boston onto the team. They need another pure C type and based on last year Boston looked like a lock. This year she hasn't been the same and the attention all goes to Clark. Imagine if Boston made it and Clark didn't. Or as a poster mentioned, if Clark was on the team but only getting mop up minutes with the newcomer fan base wanting to see her more than multiple year WNBA All Stars.

The CC furor obviously complicates a few things, but there are other issues too. Diana makes it based on her past not the present, and with Gray they are assuming she will be ready even though she is not yet back. It does appear that familiarity and continuity were favored. Note all four stars from the Aces, and Sabrina and Stewie from the Liberty. That at least gives the team a fair amount of familiarity with each other.

Cheryl Reeves was very clear. Clark could not make the training camp because she was playing for Iowa in NCAA's. Very simple.

To try to put her on the team would be a travesty. And it has nothing to do with her talent. She has had no time with this team. Her popularity has nothing to do with it.

You play by the rules, no exception. Clark's time will come. But not this Olympics.

Don't have to convince me. Women will be women. If there is no noise, just means discretion has gained a few new disciples.

She also hasn’t played or tried out for any USA basketball teams in years. I sure she was asked to try out for that fifa team that lost last year and turned it down. Stuff like that matters too.

Not sure if it was the last time that Caitlin played for Team USA, but she was the backup PG behind someone named Paige.

Does Caitlin play too much like Arike to fit the Team USA mold? We’ll know in time.

Lots of fans love to see Clark hoist logo 3’s, but seven of the 14 players on that roster have a higher 3-pt percentage in the W than her. CC is entertaining, but this team looks like it was built to bring home the gold.

I love that 3 Huskies made the team.
I particularly love that Diana made the team. Diana is the leader and sets the tone. The fact that her presence makes so many fans of other teams unhappy kinda makes it more special.

BTW, I don't have strong feelings about Clark. I don't think she belongs on the Olympic team, although some think it's a marketing miss. Maybe it is but the decision's been made. What Clark should do now, to quiet the noise and out of respect for the players who did make the team, is make a statement of support for USA Basketball. She should say that she's not ready and not deserving to play for USA BB in this year's Olympics but that she intends to work hard and hopes to play in future Olympics. She'd upset a lot of her supporters but it would be the right thing to do. Will she?

The Athletic Article: “That the committee decided to go this route isn’t a total surprise. It is a reflection of some past precedent. “That chemistry really speeds up the learning curve and the process,” committee member Seimone Augustus recently told The Athletic.”
In 2016 past participation was ignored by the committee in favor of three players who hadn’t participated in the Olympics before. Granted committee members change but still.

The “right” thing would be to say she’s not ready and not deserving? The second part about working hard and hoping to play in future Olympics is a very gracious thing to say and perhaps her camp should do this but I’d never expect any competitor to come out and say they aren’t deserving of something.

The USA team selected for the Olympic Games does not need adoration. They are looking to win the gold medal, not win a popularity contest. CC is not physically ready for the (even more physical play in international competition) US team. The team will play as a team, not looking to boost anyone’s ego. So if the CC fans don’t adore this team… who cares. Let the casual fans go. If you love women’s basketball you will support the wnba. The women selected will represent well.
