A top 10 pick is a pretty large overreaction unless his ball handling exponentially increases. He just needs to slow down mentally, but every tool is on his work belt.
Exactly. I noticed the fumbling of the ball but it seemed to be more of an issue of just being in too much of a rush. When the game slows down he`ll slow down and then what i said wont seem so crazy. Guys like him dont stay on the draft board long.

Watching him play i kept saying to myself, junk yard dog. The kind of guy that when he plays on your team you love and the other side hates. You look at the stat line and say how the hec did that happen?

I have felt that Ross could play guard going back to last year. Do we really need a PG. McNeeley, Karaban and Ross handle the ball very good. Ball, well who knows what this kids ceiling is but it is definitely 1st round level. I mean if he would have started at another position that means Ball or McNeeley do not start. The way they both played is there a world where neither of them start.

To add a little hyperbole and reaction factor, I will say this. The player who looked like the best PG on the floor for us was Nowell.

The staff will have their hands full. As we have heard from Hurley last year it worked out that it was plug and play the top eight where the top seven was plug and play. Stewart became eight later in the year. This year it looks like we may end up having several starting line ups.

I agree we have to give AM time. But he has to work on his body language so he does not look so out of place on the floor.
The reality is that Diarra got Ross going in the second half.

I’m very pleasantly surprised. Last year in his limited minutes I thought he looked like a guy a bit slow footed with a decent shot. Tonight he was a whole different player. Looked fantastic.

Possibly an early first half paired substitution, then start the second half and finish the game together?

Holy hell does Danny have some chess pieces.
The one thing that’s always stood out these last couple of years is that most coaches prepare to play against the other team’s starting 5. With UConn you’ve got to play against a starting 10.

Going to watch him in isolation on the tape but what I saw from the stands was his quickness staying in front of his man and his size out there. He’s had no real past game time to get comfortable on the court and in the second half he started to assert himself. The bench was treating him like Michael Jordan when he came back. He has a nice shot. He must feel really good this morning.

I have seen what you mean. Even in the scrimmage. I wouldn't say a spazz, I would say a rookie QB trying to process everything as the game has sped up. Over thinking perhaps. The Body can't flow state when the brain is stuck in paralysis by analysis. When I coached I had players like that. They weren't immature. They needed time to assimilate the playbook, the rotations, and then get enough court time to reaally feel comfortable out there. To get over the fear of making a mistake. A Different position, but i thought it took Facey along time too. Maybe that's what's clicked with Ross.

or maybe it is all Coach Speak to get Ross to that level of comfort through DH's jedi mind tricks.
Well, I'll tell you what he did not look like last year - THAT. Wow

Hard to explain what I saw last year. Almost like his thought processes hadn't caught up to what his body could do yet ? And when I say spaz, I mean, like if someone with average athelticism was suddenly transported into Jayden's body. Like he hadn't figured out how to control his athleticism yet.

By the way, I’ll say this: anyone who watches ball would know a guy with his tools has the CHANCE to develop. Every kid at 17-18 is at a different stage.

No one knows how a player will develop. But anyone thinking the kid couldn’t dribble, or play 2, or was permanently entrenched on the bench just because of his frosh performances in garbage time on an all-time great team doesn’t think beyond the base level or doesn’t know sports.

The Boneyard is also peak “prisoner of the moment.” 3 days ago every post was about how unknown he is and probably Hurley was lying about him being good, just to motivate others. Now, 5 minutes after a good performance in a 40 point win vs New Hampshire, he’s more athletic than anyone in our program history and he’s a lottery pick.

Maybe slow down and view the big picture. All these kids are consistently developing, and some at different rates.

Give me an argument to support this vagueness. It was overtly obvious he was the most disruptive player on the court today.

The argument is: 1 good game vs New Hampshire is a great sign for his development but no indication that he’s instantly a sure fire top 10 pick and the most athletic player in UConn history.

He had a huge growth spurt in high school. I mentioned this in his commitment thread I believe but it usually takes those guys time to get comfortable in there new bodies.

He was already pretty athletic too, but you could tell he was getting used to his new height.

Hurley has to be the greatest salesmen in college basketball. Keeping this much talent on a team season after season and still keep the harmony, peace, joy and unity, makes Hurley the top Coach in the land. I don't see any coach that can manage to keep his bench players intact, committed and loyal.

I suspect his sales pitch is a 'Championship Family' style pitch. Makes sense if so, because he's the only Coach in the Nation qualified to sell this.
Agree and also, like JC, Uconn players are "NBA ready."

NBA camps help players a lot. Being in an environment where you’re trying to showcase yourself amongst some of the best does wonders for your confidence. No sacrificing, no worrying about minutes or anything, just going out to show how good of a player you can be.

Having that “me” period to see what you’re capable of and bringing it back to your team is very helpful. Ross looked completely different and fearless during that scrimmage.

Need all of our stars to find their way to camps or team USA over the summer.
If he went to an NBA camp or worked out with a high end trainer that says volumes about summer "camp." We've seen this in the past. Great for Ross. He will also be setting an example for everyone else. LOL a "dog eat dog" environment.

Hurley has been telling us. But it sure was nice to see it with our own eyes. In some ways it reminded me of Calhoun saying Jeremy Lamb was this incredible shooter and "special player." But we didn't see it on the court... until we saw it on the court.

We saw it last night. The confident shooting, the high end athleticism translating on both ends of the floor, you could also see that his teammates believed in him. It was a WOW moment.

Endless permutations. Giving opposing coaches nightmares.

What senior leadership should do with young talent. He put him in a position to succeed and Ross took it from there. Actually a real old time point guard their job was to get the rest of the team involved.

Not sure how it happened matters as much as that it did happen. We saw a 6’7” player who is quick enough (and will be coached up defensively) that can cover an elite bigger two guard or even be quick enough to cover some point guards. I like what he brings to table more than his offense but he is effective on both ends of the floor.

We will need his defensive flexibility to become the team we want to become.

Grain of salt time; it was XL Center vs UNH

My 2 game thought is that Maheney has the best handle and best shot over Diarra. He played much better last night than last Wednesday for sure. Diarra did not. I did see him at time play incredible 1:1 defense but somehow the UNH player got the shot to fall in - Mahaney was a blanket at times. So defensive intensity is there, maybe not overall D.

Reed Jr > Johnson

S5 should be:

1. Maheney
2. Ross
3. McNeeley
4. Karaban
5. Reed, Jr.

That is some serious offense and defense and height. Would think by Baylor game this will be it.

Ross - I zeroed in on him the entire second half he was in the game. He tried to jump passing lanes and had a lot of near steals. He was so hyperactive on defense, I'm not sure how any player can have that much intensity while playing real minutes. Which he did. He guarded his man tight and you could see that quickness with his arms and legs - wow.

Now he wasn't exactly guarding Tristen Newton out there, but I'm sure he has in practice.

So yeah, it's a really small sample size. But, he's extremely active on defense with an insane intensity. Can he play this way longer term without fouling a lot? I have no idea. But you can definitely see that intensity, quickness, and length?

Kid can get to the rim it seems, but again small sample size. Last year he seemed to have a midrange game. Small sample size. Can he shoot 3s in games? We'll, we will find out over the next several games. Some guys just never miss 3s in shootaround like Bouknight, Clingan, Ball, etc.

So yeah, it's way too early to get caught up on Ross. But it was fascinating to see him play defense with his athleticism/quickness/intensity. I'm like wow. Despite Hurley saying he's been one of the best players on practice.

Ahhh. I Didn’t say either of those things, and argued against one of them…but it’s okay, we can revisit this in February.

Dan Hurley said it. The eye ball test passes. Time will tell.

We certainly did not see this last year, but I do recall a game last year when he came in late. He drove into the lane and pulled up for a 10 foot jumper which he hit. I was surprised he could do that and it stuck with me. That shot is not easy. It requires ball control, footwork, body control, and a soft touch.

When on D, it looked like Ross was thinking too much and he seem super juiced. I said to my wife that he needs to slow down so he can go fast. I was wondering why DH was sticking with him and I said DH has seen something in practice And he wants to see if it translates into the game. I am super juiced myself now, as I want to see if he can make the jump this year. This could be special.
