Post game presser on Youtube. Hurley said Ross would have started if healthy and has been one of the best players the last 2 weeks. Then he said he was really looking forward to the lineup of - Ross, Ball, Liam, Karaban and one of the centers. Aidan and Diarra might both be coming of the bench. Loves the athleticism , length, defense, and shooting Ross brings. Very interesting.

I have felt that Ross could play guard going back to last year. Do we really need a PG. McNeeley, Karaban and Ross handle the ball very good. Ball, well who knows what this kids ceiling is but it is definitely 1st round level. I mean if he would have started at another position that means Ball or McNeeley do not start. The way they both played is there a world where neither of them start.

To add a little hyperbole and reaction factor, I will say this. The player who looked like the best PG on the floor for us was Nowell.

The staff will have their hands full. As we have heard from Hurley last year it worked out that it was plug and play the top eight where the top seven was plug and play. Stewart became eight later in the year. This year it looks like we may end up having several starting line ups.

I agree we have to give AM time. But he has to work on his body language so he does not look so out of place on the floor.

I got a chance to hang out with Nowell during an event prior to one of the football games. What an extremely well spoken young man with quite the compact bulldog physique. He did look extremely comfortable running the offense after he settled in. These coaches just continue to hit the jackpot in recruiting and Nowell should have an amazing college career with us.

Would have been a burger boy if 2 inches taller. He is kyle lowry 2.0

Backcourt of Ball and Ross? Who even imagined that? You never know with this staff.
Seems like the year is getting more and more exciting.
Well I suggested/predicted Ross would play guard. Hurley has shown he likes big guards. The thought was always discounted on the yard but at least to me I saw in the limited playing time he got that Ross had the skills to play a big 2 guard.

I'm sure glad I don't have to decide who plays how many minutes. We're talented, we're deep, we have great kids, I love them all and I enjoy watching them all

I'm just here for the ride

thank you Huskies

I don't know how Ross can possibly live up to the things that Hurley is saying about him. Maybe if he flies over the court and never misses a shot. But the build up will be very hard to live up to.
Yes, in a court of law it would all be hearsay. The credence we give to it is entirely based on the fact that it's Dan Hurley saying it.

This is Hurley and the coaching staff along with the analytics firm figuring all of this stuff out so we don't have to. :p

Based on what I saw from both Mahaney and Diarra last night I have no issues with Ross starting as he will bring the tenacity and can also shoot. Mahaney weakneess is defense and Diarra's is shooting. He will fix both of those issues which is nice if him and Solo can initiate the offense. The only thing that worries me is what does that mean for Nowell's minutes. I like to see more of him.

I'm speechless at his commentaries on Jayden Ross. Here I was thinking of him slipping down the line in back of all the other talent and Dan Hurley springs this on us. Dan Hurley has become very open and humorous about his moods
and he admits to being challenged as to how he is going to balance utilizing all the talent and aggressiveness of his players. He and the staff are just doing a marvelous job of getting the best out of these kids. Love listening to him talk about the team.

Again, everything said about a player, and everything omitted about players is done on purpose.

A little after the 12 min mark

Awesome to hear Hurley say that "getting to the RIM" was one of the specific things Ross has been excelling with the last 2 weeks. Kid is working hard, developing, and improving.

Giddy to see if it translates into games...

As an aside (related to Ross being a potential 6-7 positionless player):

All along since he arrived at UConn, it's been Hurley's "endgame" vision to develop an almost 100% positionless UConn team. The first couple years it wasn't realistic...so he built culture with the right players that stayed, and recruited as best he could for a once-proud team down on its luck.

Strong culture, players with strong work ethic who got better and overachieved their "star ranking", resulted in a much better team and recruiting has since snowballed.

Looking at our current young pups and the incoming class for next year, we'll have 4*/5* players at nearly every spot that can toast you from behind the arc, drive past you to the rim, or beat you from a classic post up spot.

What a time to be a UConn fan...

Hurley has said we might see McNeeley on ball more. I’m not sure how good his handle is but might be better than Ross. That would take some pressure off Ross and make our starting 5 really big.

I think positional size was definitely an advantage last year, especially at the guard positions. 6'4" Spencer/6'5" Newton/6'6" Castle....very few opponents could match our backcourt size and length, and it definitely caused issues for many opponents.

A 1-3 of Ball (6'4" but 6'9" wingspan), Ross (6'7"), and McNeeley or Stewart (both 6'7") would create similar matchup problems.

If Ball is able to play PG that opens up a ton of fun lineup combinations and more minutes for our best players. I've been skeptical but I hope he can do it. I don't doubt anything about Dan Hurley and his players though

You mean Ball as PG, McNeeley as SG? Maybe but I think Ross has a pretty good handle. Exciting times and unlike last years team were the strength was at Guard this year's team it is at the forwards position.

Hard not to get excited about this team. Add Ross to the mix even if he's half of what Hurley is saying shows how talented and deep this roster is. At his length, he's going to be a matchup nightmare on both ends of the floor if he's one of the guards. Imagine him on the floor with McNeeley and Karaban at the 4 & 5, all 6-7. That's a lot of length disrupting passing lanes, defense rebounding and weakside & on assignment blocks. On offense, 2 or all them will have length to shoot over their defenders and chase after some offensive rebounds. Not to mention all three have plus handles and are good passers.

Early on, their team D and technique to keep players in front of them, hedging and switching will be a work in progress, but once it all clicks, having 2 to 3 of these three on the floor will be a scary proposition for most teams. This depth plus that of the guards should keep the level of play and energy high. Most teams try to weather those segments in the game where key players are on the bench to catch their breath or due to foul trouble. The staff has such an array of talented multi-positional players, that throughout the majority of the 40 minutes they'll have multiple scoring threats and solid defenders to keep the productivity high and pressure on their opponent.

Based on what Hurley said there will be a number of players that will get a lot of run any given game, which will mean some of those same players in the mix might have moderate minutes depending on who's playing better and matchups. I can see games where the PT for Diarra, Stewart, Mahaney and Ross will differ from game to game.

We know Karaban, Samson, Reed, Ball and McNeeley will all get lots of PT most games. It's those prior 4 and maybe add Nowell into the mix that will end up competing for PT each night. I included Diarra because his PT could be impacted if Ross carves into the minutes at the guard position. The way Ball is playing, hard to see him not getting big time minutes every game. It will be interesting to see how Hurley divides up the minutes as the season goes on.

Mahaney will get minutes before Nowell just do to his shooting. He will rebound in that area I'm sure.
