There are a lot of people on here who love UConn but for whatever reason don’t love [insert any given player]. This has been true for me since 1998.

My problem will always be the imbeciles who condemn a coach or player after a few bad games. A close second are the people who wanna put a coach player on a pedestal after just a few really good games.

Cherry picking rarely end well for the cherry picker.

There are more than a few posters here that have an irrational dislike of Hurley. I’m refraining from calling them out by name.

I'd argue, especially if you disconnect player acquisition in the offseason from actually coaching during the season that, given the team he had, he did just as good a job last year. To be better, they'd have to have beaten the eventual champion in the 1-8 matchup. Pretty tall order. And yet they were one possession away from doing that.

I hear you, but I think you are really underplaying his resume. The stats you're giving are all-time (though so is the WAR I shared), and you need context.

Two years were Wagner, in which he made an incredible turnaround before moving to Rhode Island.
Six years were URI, and it took him 3 years to make them a winning team. His last two years he made the tournament from Rhode Island. They were an 11 and a 7 seed. Each year he won.

Then he's been at UConn for 8 years. There was one bad year, and then in 2020 there wasn't a tournament, and though they probably weren't going to make it, they were 19-12 with games to go in the AACT. After that, he's made the tournament every year and has over-performed the last four.

But tournament results aren't all that matters. Give John Scheyer Wagner. Give Tom Izzo Rhode Island.

Pitino has won at every level. A few other top coaches have won at low levels as well (Self, May) but most have not also won multiple titles and have a net over-performance in the NCAAs.

Dan was pretty chill with refs last night-Still amped in the huddles. Team followed his lead with their eyes on the prize. Gonna school Scheyer on Sunday.
 
We are so fortunate to have Dan Hurley. He resurrected this program. He established a winning culture. He turned down every marquee job in the basketball world. No ncaa violations like most in the coaching fraternity. Worked his way up from high school coaching to the pinnacle of the sport. All while being a man of faith, devoted husband and father.

But sometimes he yells at refs which is too much /s
 
There is really no such thing as the best coach. You would have to be the winningest coach, best at clock management, best offensive coach, the best defensive coach, the best motivator, the best best recruiter, the best at player development and on a on. And all those aspects can be broken down even further as in best zone coach coach, best man to man coach, etc. The whole concept of best coach is nonsense.

I know this. We have a very good coach. But arguing about who is the best coach is as meaningful as arguing how many angels can fit on the head of a pin.

With only one exception, he's been great this year as far as dealing with the refs.

The idea that many people here still push, that coaches who "work" the refs are paid off in the long run ... it's just stupidity at the highest level.

Aside from the fact that it's not quite what I said (tournament results are only part of it), that's just actively wrong. A sub-par coach doesn't take three different programs at three different levels that had all been mired in losing seasons and turn them around to winning teams.

My insistence on that is because Jon Scheyer, for instance, has many Sweet 16s and E8s as Hurley, but the fact that Hurley not only has titles (Scheyer does not yet), but had to win—and did win—at the lowest levels (rather than being gifted the job) tells me he's a better coach.

Hurley has accomplished a lot even not taking the NCAAs into account. Obviously if he kept losing in the first round at UConn I might agree he met his match, but you're underselling what he's done.
 
Dan continues to evolve and get better at his craft. He'll be the first to admit he has areas to improve in/on. What he has done at UConn -with the rosters he's had(and developed) and resources he's been given- is very impressive. He's still writing the story. Stay tuned-Not gonna be dull.

I thought this was schtick. It doesn't seem like it is because you've done this a bunch of times and I can't find any sort of humorous angle you're searching for.

Bob Hurley Sr. would be a bit annoyed and then laugh in your face before telling you he coached high school kids.

Everything is relative. If you takeover a team and make it less crappy, but still don't make the tournament - Congratulations, you accomplish something, but nobody in the right mind is going to consider you a great coach for having done so.

Taking nothing else into consideration, Hurley is the most successful tournament coach in the past four years. I will concede that was OP's point, and I agree.

But three Sweet 16s in 16 years isn't much of a résumé compared to the rest of the field.

Bob Hurley Senior has accomplished more in his lifetime than his sons have at the same stage in their career. 26 state titles.

Aside from Hurley being the most successful tournament coach of the past four years, he is putting together one of the most impressive four year runs in the history of the tournament.

Yawn. A dozen coaches have won two or more championships in their career, with entirely different teams/players, which is far more impressive than b2b.

Back to the OP - yes, Dan Hurley is the most successful Div I men's bb coach over the past four years. If UConn loses on Sunday (not my prediction), 1/2 the posters in this thread will disappear until next season, much like they did after the first few games last season.

My bottom line: I loathe chest pounding at any time until the next Champions are crowned. There is no current coach I would rather have coaching this UConn team than Dan Hurley. But I'm fairly certain even he would agree that all the chest pounding now won't mean much without another championship this year, or at the very least, a final four.

Agreed, but given last year's teams flaws, the fact that he came within a basket of taking down the eventual national champs is not nothing.

Hurley is awesome. Like any person he’s not perfect, but he’s a lot closer to perfect than most.

On its face, this is a demonstrably false statement. Bob Hurley Sr. Is not currently coaching, and therefore cannot be a better coach "right now."

That's not hyperbole; that's fact. Such an irresponsible assertion could lead one to wonder if you qualify to be regarded among the top 2 present day UConn fans named Tom Emery.
