Hurley Gets it

UConn commits fouls. The way they play defense they will be prone to it, and they are particularly careless with obvious reach in fouls.

….opponents who also play tough D again them do not get called for the holds, hand checks, pushes, illegal screens sticking knees and hips out, etc, that they should

It’s not about hating UConn, but not calling the less obvious fouls that slows down the movement of the offense. UConn opponents have mimicked how St John’s defends them. More power to them, the horribly bad ncaa officiating largely gives them a pass, so why wouldn’t they.
People seem to not understand Mullins, as a young , tall but very slight, skinny guard without much strength would have his shot affected by the grabbing, holding, and out right physical nature of the way he was defended throughout the Big East schedule.

Took his legs right out from his shot. Never really was able to regain they rythmn.

That’s what the NCAA wants?

Michigan hacked and pushed with impunity. From the first few minutes when they hacked Reed's arm causing the ball to go out of bounds and they refs gave the ball to Michigan, we were in trouble.

It’s the St. John’s defense. Until it’s called, teams will continue to use it against this offense.

Maybe it’s selective memory, but while I remember Hawkins getting banged up and held to some degree while running through the offense, I don’t remember it being nearly this bad.

I'm not gonna get on the refs. It had to be a difficult game to call given the physical play and that it was a NC. If anything, I'm more annoyed at the inconsistency of how much contact was needed to call a foul vs "missed" calls. There'd be a ton of contact under the basket with hands slapping all over but no call, then a grazed arm gets a call.

I know I said, "what foul?" far fewer times than I said, "you have to make that shot". I don't recall exactly how many times I said the latter, but eight sounds about right. That would be 16 potential points.

It's not the time or place to criticize individual players as overall the team gave it all they had, but I am disappointed in a few guys not named Alex Karaban, who played an amazing game on both ends.

There absolutely should be a count of fouls by refs/team, but often it's the non-calls that matter even more.
This is the key thing. I'll stipulate that we committed most of our fouls, but if you call those you have to call Silas being treated like a mid-1980s Mike Tyson sparring partner 80% of the time he had the ball.

"It's not the reason why we lost" = "It's not the reason why we lost but, yeah, it sucked"

But good for him for being subtle and giving credit where it's due. You gain nothing by complaining.

Dan and his staff had an excellent game plan/scout. The team controlled as much as they could with their energy/boards/gritty D. We were a few shots away(as we were vs Florida last year) from grabbing the W. Shots didn't fall -had good looks. What more can a coach ask of his team? IMO-Dan's best year as a UConn coach with the roster he had -so far.

.-.
Hurley has more class than I would have in that moment, but it is the right thing to do as the head coach. Need to play the long game.

In a way, last night’s officiating was years karmic retribution in the making. From the outset of Hurley’s tenure, many here believed his approach towards the officials was excessively combative, and it seemed to escalate into something very personal for some of the refs. And unfortunately we came across one of those scorned refs last night.

I do wonder if Hurley continues to take the high road moving forward, will those officials drop their grudge, or is it something we will have to deal with for the rest of their tenure.

Hurley knows damn well that he's plastered all over social media and news stations if he talks about the officiating like Geno did. Theres this notion that Hurley is a cry baby who always blames the officials, I hope that dies down a bit in the public eye. I'm proud of the way he handled that loss you also have to give life lessons to your kids of how to handle losing.

Look Michigan earned that win, but if players and coaches can lose their jobs then officials should too. While it hurts that we didn't hit enough shots looking at in hindsight maybe I feel better that we didn't. I couldn't imagine what a Seton Hall loss in 89 would've felt like.

Michigan earned the win by shooting incredibly well from the line, but it should have been a different game script from the beginning
