Hurley Gets it

I was hoping if we lost he would take it with stride. He did a great job, he has two titles..3 championship games in four years. Just a hell of a run, and it’s not like we won’t be back soon either. Geno could take some notes, you can be arrogant if you want but there’s a time and place for it.

Geno's been coaching for 40 years and he lost it once. He doesn't need to learn anything.

I’ve been really happy with how the whole team handled it last night. They gave everything they had and just came up a little short. “Go out on your shield”

They had a great gameplan. They executed it. Just fell short finishing the plays they needed to finish. Obviously championships are the expectation here now. But if you build a culture where you bring in skilled high character guys, and you get them to buy in and give everything they have, then you ride that as far as it brings you and be happy with the result. 3 title games in 4 years and 2 rings is a great result. And it’s not over yet

I wasn’t happy with the officiating but it doesn’t matter anymore. Complaining won’t change anything. I’m proud of the guys for how they showed up and represented the program

.-.
I woke up this morning as a very proud Huskies fan! Let’s be real. The officiating hurt us last night. But Hurley absolutely did the right thing. He acknowledged that it hurt us, but didn’t dwell on it. We needed to hit more shots to win the game. Such is life. Move on. Get psyched for next season!

So you're saying they would wait a day or two before complaining about the refs. I think someone said that's the way to do it. After the game, you praise your players and the other team, wait a day or two to complain about anything.

I'm not saying or suggesting anything about what Dan should or shouldn't do publicly.

I'm fine with him taking the high road post game - I think he shows respect which is why other coaches (and not fans) respect him.

I just think upon further review there are going to be half dozen calls that are really going to eat away at him - whether he says it to the media or not

Hurley is going to go nuclear when him and the staff rewatch the game.

He already knows. He is fully aware that we got completely jobbed in this one. In fact, I suspect that part of the reason he handled it so well in the moment is he knew what he was in for heading into the game with Breeding ahead of time.

But what we are seeing is the amazing maturation of Dan Hurley. He has clearly spoken to people he trusts about his past behaviors and flaws. In his head, there is no doubt that he knew this game was given away by the refs. In the past, he would’ve flipped out and gone crazy (just look at last year‘s Florida lost as an example). But someone has clearly explained to him that complaining about it and embarrassing the refs just makes it worse in the long run (last night‘s game as a clear example). Complaining about it just makes it worse in the future, and puts a bigger target on his and the programs back from the media and the refs. He clearly gets it now—you just smile, say the refs are amazing refs, and move on. Hopefully over time that will earn back some credit from the refs and he won’t get such a bad whistle in the future.

Seeing Hurley during the game and at the press conference afterwards was incredible to see. It shows how much Hurley has matured and grown. It has me even more confident that over the next dozen years he likely has a couple of championships and high single digit number of final fours at UConn.

Hurley exploded last year after Florida. So he made up for by being nice last night.

But his team got the short end from the refs and he knows it.

Hurley is finally playing the game at least. He will probably break a few items when they watch the tape.
Yes! It's fine for us to whine. We are fans. Dan is late to this but he has to play the game out of self interest if nothing else. Refs are (very) human and if you call them idiots all the time you are not going to get 50/50 (or 80/20 in this game) calls.

.-.
I was proud of how Hurley handled everything last night. He coached a game plan that gave us the best chance to win and we stayed in striking distance until the final minute. He was gracious in defeat, complimentary of Michigan, and grateful for what his team gave him in this tourney.

Losing with class.

I actually love that this is pointed out. All class, played their guts out against a wrecking ball(and james breeding) and in that moment the first thing out of his mouth is praising Michigan. Say what you will but this guy gets it. Taking notes John???? Still waiting....

Hurley really handled the media well more than ever this year. After the Florida loss going into the locker he’s learned more then ever the cameras are always on him and knowing the media will try and bait him with questions especially at the final four.

.-.

Agreed. It does take a degree of maturity to not complain or point fingers after a tough loss. I had a coworker who used to say all the time,"there's a time in a place for everything." Right after a tough loss, the right thing to do is to focus on the positives.

lmao the eyebrows when he says "and James, who we're familiar with."

Don't need to be a body language expert to read that one.
Catching more bees with honey than vinegar maybe? It had to hurt to say but glad he took the high road otherwise it would be all over the internet.
The women's board is chock full of pearl-clutching blue hairs who don't understand what being a sports fan is about.
Reminds me of the movie “Radio” when there were a few sour grapes complaining about their single mediocre football season and legendary coach (played by Ed Harris). Then when the he quits, everyone is like “wait, what do we do now?”.

Behind closed doors yes. My sense of this is that he knows those refs screwed his team. They might have lost anyway. I think he came to the conclusion that the refs have that power to screw his team and players if he disparages them in public, he'll see Breeding a lot next year, and Anderson some and he has to stop the damage now. This is his olive branch.

That's the whole point of media these days, just ask "gothcha" questions.

Yes and Hurley is the number 1 target, the members of the press I’m sure are told by their executives to ask questions that will make Hurley go viral so they can get clicks.

Complaining about the ridiculously bad officiating at that point with a team that left it all on the line serves no purpose. Good job by Hurley. MUCH more important things than addressing them. They deserve all the credit in the world. Fantastic season. Not one bad thing to say about ANY of them.

As fans, screw it. We can complain. Not taking ANYTHING away from Michigan, they are a terrific team and a worthy champion who earned it.

That being said….James Breeding and “high knees” are garbage who don’t belong anywhere near college games as referees. And they embarrass themselves time and time again.

There was a time - in the early years of this century - when Connecticut MADE more foul shots than our opponents TOOK. Those days appear to be over. Danny has instilled a different culture. That culture is aggressive, brash and in-your-face and that is part of our charm as well as part of the defense we play. Over that past season, our opponents took more foul shots that we did 26 times out of 40 with two other games where the number of foul shots were even. In most of the other 12 games, we were playing early in the season against third and fourth tier opponents who couldn't stay with us at any level. Overall we committed 51 more fouls than our opponents joverall - we committed them early so we got into foul trouble, espcially aginat bertter opponents.

Throughout the season, we had 120 referee assignments to our games, what? maybe 30-40-50 different referees? Either 90% of them hate us and are biased for our oppponent, or we just foul more often because of our personality. If foul shots were eliminated altogether, the only games we would have still lost were Marquette and St. John's in the BE tourney. My god, we'd be national champions again!

I - for one - perfer to believe that all referees hate us - that they actively try to make sure we lose - that we never actually foul anyone - and the world would be a better place if that were the case. Perhaps, though, Danny needs to bring in a defensive coach that can teach our guys to defend without fouling.

UConn commits fouls. The way they play defense they will be prone to it, and they are particularly careless with obvious reach in fouls.

….opponents who also play tough D again them do not get called for the holds, hand checks, pushes, illegal screens sticking knees and hips out, etc, that they should

It’s not about hating UConn, but not calling the less obvious fouls that slows down the movement of the offense. UConn opponents have mimicked how St John’s defends them. More power to them, the horribly bad ncaa officiating largely gives them a pass, so why wouldn’t they.
People seem to not understand Mullins, as a young , tall but very slight, skinny guard without much strength would have his shot affected by the grabbing, holding, and out right physical nature of the way he was defended throughout the Big East schedule.

Took his legs right out from his shot. Never really was able to regain they rythmn.

That’s what the NCAA wants?

I think it is a crime that they don't provide a count of each refs fouls per team. It should be a stat who calls what on who? Love to see Breeding's stats for this over the years.
