Hurley’s comparing Mullins to Curry

Jack Nicholson Yes GIF

Hurley said he was NOT comparing Mullins to Curry as basketball players.

He was referring to the mechanics of their shots and how they were different. Specifically he was talking about Mullins having a lower release point but said it was not a problem because he got the shot off so quickly.

I saw Curry in college if only he was that good .
He played with a pretty average bunch of guys that made a splash in the NCAA tournament on the back of his incredible shooting.
The closest thing to Curry would be Larry Bird
Dragging Indiana State to the finals However
Bird was a senior and Curry a junior so
Comparing is a bit unfair
Unfortunately we won’t get to see that level of maturity

Seth Curry couldn't even hold onto Larry Bird's jock strap

So frustrating for Hurley that he explicitly went out of his way multiple times in that interview to state he was NOT comparing Mullins to Curry, solely the low release angle and shot height, and then the team reports immediately ask their first question to Braylon saying “how does it feel for Hurley to compare you to Curry?”

I can see why these guys hate doing interviews when even our local guys can’t stop themselves from twisting the words that were said.

Bird was older because he had dropped out of college. But he was drafted by the Celtics as a sophomore and joined them after his junior year. So both Curry and Bird were juniors in the NCAAs. Different years of course.

Bird was also a small/power forward at 6'9" but grew in college from 6'6".

Doubt Braylon will add 3 inches of height but stranger things have happened (see David Robinson height growth).

That said, there was much more to Bird's game than 3pt shooting, he could pass and drive with the best of them and had a heads up BBIQ to his game. In that regard, Mullins is a better comp overall to Bird than Curry as Mullins can rebound, shoot the 2pt, drive, and assist.

But shot mechanics alone, that is a decent Steph Curry comparison.

I mean not really. Just said there were some passing similarities in their shot release points.

Braylon really reminds me of Danny Ainge. Extremely athletic, tough competitor who can really shoot.

Classic Hurley - why you often have to take his superlatives with a grain of salt. First rounders, NBA this or that - now a shooter like one of the best NBA players of all time.

Good article from Dom Amore.

“I didn’t have to mess with his form, he just had, you know, a God’s gift there when he was little,” said Josh Mullins, Braylon’s father and the family’s shooting guru. “It was more about the reps. I played at a mid-major, IUPUI. I shot higher, my release was like Larry Bird’s. I just shot it higher because I’m 6-4, 6-5 and they had 6-8 guys on me. I was never able to fix (Braylon’s) release point and didn’t want to mess with it because people were like, ‘it’s too low.’ I said, ‘but it’s fast and it’s consistent.'”

Curry played 100+ games in college in a mid major conference. Besides Dan Hurley wasnt comparing them as players just their shot. BM may never be as good as SC and he doesnt have to be. Although he has a prettier shot he reminds me of Reggie Miller.

Watching Braylon Mullins' 3pt release, he reminded me of someone, where I had to look up some clips of that player and noticed the similarities. Take a look at the release by Derrick White, of the C's, on his 3 ball. Looks very similar, though Braylon more consistently releases his a tad quicker, but the start and release points are similar. When Derrick has to get his shot off quickly when the shot clock is about to expire or needs to get it off before the D closes on him, he releases it more quickly but still the same motion, where it looks a lot like Braylon's.

Steph has the perfect NBA coach for his shooting style/prowess in Steve Kerr. Steve shot over 50% on three point shots in two different seasons and has a career 3 pt shooting percentage of 45.4%. Not bad. As soon as Steph is past the half court logo he's a threat to make a three. Since he's a point guard with the ball in his hands often and has the automatic green light from his coach- He can take advantage of his excellent ball skills to get his shot off. Quick and accurate release. Plays cat and mouse with defenders as to when to put a shot up/use a screen, etc.

BM seems to have excellent range for a young dude and is gaining the green light status from his coach-within our sets and improvising when the situation dictates it. No question about the speed of his release and his accuracy .As a shooting guard he's a little more reliant on his point guards/teammates getting him the ball in his spots at this stage of his career. As we've seen-he's got an abundant bag of shot-making skills to get his shot whenever he wants it.

Danny/staff have been doing an excellent job of cultivating his growth and confidence now that he's healthy again and more familiar with our sets with his increased PT. Timing of his ascension couldn't be better.
