I don't think the UConn job is behind Indiana and Purdue. I know they're both B1G jobs but Indiana just hired DeVries last year, and while it may end up being a good hire, I don't remember that being a high profile job search like we're looking at with UNC. I guess you could argue it either way.

What? You are kidding, right? Florida a blue blood, please. They won 2 titles 20 years ago and then last year. They have been to 1 other If people don’t consider UConn a blue blood there is no way Florida is even in the conversation. UNC was in the national championship game in 2022. Won it all in 2005, 2009, 2017, runner up in 2016. Those are marks of a blue blood. Not some team that wins every quarter century and is just a filler most other years.
 
UNC should hire Red Auerbach. Surely he would come back from the dead to coach at prestigious place like UNC. Other legendary Boston coaches like Bill Belichick have broken the seal on other sports at UNC paving the way for Red.

Indiana hasn't won a title in almost 40 years. They last made a final 4 in 2002. Heck, they haven't even made it to the Sweet 16 in 10 years.

Since their last Final 4 appearance, UConn has won 5 titles, and has 6 F4 appearances. Also, a lot of Indiana's resources are now going to football, and for good reason.

Coach Cal's last 8 years:

2 Elite 8s
3 S16s
1 second round exit
2 first round upsets
1 missed tournament
1 cancelled tournament (kenpom guesses a 4 seed)

You can look at the other blue bloods, and many of them went through a lull in the aftermath of COVID.

Duke missed the tournament and had a first round exit.
UNC missed the tournament and has been down (changed coaches)
Kansas won a title, but has had little success since.

I get why they moved on. The fan base had become toxic and there were some embarrassing performances. But even the last 8 years were pretty solid.

Indiana is a very, very good job, it’s just that it’s one of a bunch of very, very good jobs these days whereas 30-40 years ago, there might have been a handful.

They have all the money they need to be successful, but that doesn’t mean they can’t still screw it up with incompetence…..as they have lately.

Umm what? I posted before that was written. KU got rid of Norm Roberts and replaced him with Vaughan precisely because it gave them a potential backfill from within the family with HC experience. Now he's had two years seeing how it works in college in this era.
 
Interesting Self comes out bad says reports of him resigning are BS, but then doesn’t say he’s coming back, says he needs to “think about it”.

Sounds to me like he’s resigning he just wafts to be the one to break it

It's just funny it's on his Wikipedia page. Not as funny as you posting Not Jon Rothstein Bill Self tweets.

Vaughn would be a horrible hire, you better hope that's not who they hire if Self retires.

Yeah, saw that.

I stand by the view that Jacque Vaughn was brought in to replace Norm Roberts specifically so he could get experience with the modern college game and become a viable replacement for Bill. It was pretty widely expected when it happened. I don't see any young, up and coming coach that screams "must hire" right now. Nobody as appealing as Hurley was when we got him. Or Oats when he was at Buffalo. I'm not sure where UNC turns if they can't lure Lloyd from Arizona,. lure Donovan back, or entice Dusty May. TJ. Otzelberger maybe?

No matter how you look at it, North Carolina is a top 3-5 job in the country. It is a step up for most coaches outside of Duke, UConn, and Kansas. Indiana, Michigan State, and a couple of others are just below UNC.

Im hearing too many mentions of Dan Hurley to feel 100% confident. I wish these blue bloods would stop sucking in the tourney. Seems like every spring and summer we are looking over our shoulder

I don't seriously consider him a top target. He'll always been mentioned for top jobs. But, IMO, location isnt ever the reason. Hurley and Andrea liked L.A.

Plus, look at the blue bloods- UNC, Duke, Kansas, Kentucky- none of them are destinations. Most college towns are cool enough. But its not the determining factor for coaches or kids. If it were, MSU or Purdue wouldnt have a team.

I find it hard to believe that Hurley would even consider leaving for UNC. He is the 3rd highest paid coach in the country, UConn is putting a lot of $$$ into the basketball facilities, he has real NIL money, and is a God in this state. I think he is here until he retires.

The only times I’ve seen Hurley mentioned in articles is when the writer dismisses him as a candidate for UNC. Thinking anything else is unneeded anxiety.

Hurley is a creature of a habit and a northeast guy and getting plenty of what he needs right where he is. It's as simple as that. The guy isn't picking up to move to the middle of the country.

As for jobs, what a program was in the last 30 years doesn't really mean as much as it did as what it is right now, and that is $$ * brand.
