How many wins would it take for Connecticut to be in the CFP discussion?

We don’t have enough money to get into the CFP, especially as an independent.

I don't think independents are considered for the G5 spot. We would fall under the Notre Dame rule. We'd need to be well within the top 10. Probably no lower than 7th.

They would do everything in their power to pick someone else. We'd need to go 12-0 and beat one of the other schools in the field, a conference champ or one of the near locks, and blow out everyone else. A close game against Buffalo would be enough of an excuse.
Then UConn has to CRUSH the P4's on its schedule and they have to be highly ranked. Bear in mind that we have no idea how this season is gonna turn out.

If we go 12-0 we would get a passing mention from the talking heads and finish top 20.
If we go 12-0 for two straight years, we would start getting buzz. We would not make the playoffs.
If we go 12-0 for three straight years we'd be knocking on the door and there would be outrage from some corners if we didn't get a shot.

This hole we've been trying to dig out of is pretty deep.

Not only would we need to go undefeated, we would need a similar scenario to this past season where there are very few P-2 schools with two or fewer losses.

We may even need to have an inordinate number of P level schools with four or more losses as (shy of our having a few wins over ranked opponents) a three loss P level school would likely be viewed as having had a better resume than us, even with no losses.

One detriment to being independent under this set of rules is that our slot in the CFP (if we were to be deserving) would be at the expense of a P level school making the playoffs. The highest rated G level conference champ is guaranteed a spot so our making it would put two G schools in the playoffs.
I don't care to read the whole thread, but UConn would need to go undefeated for at least two straight seasons. Think UCF.

(i'm saying this with all respect and humor)

if not now, then when? when we're 5-3 and soundly out of any conversation?
i feel like this is the ONLY time to think about it lol... the sky's the limit in the summer!

I need you to explain to me how a Jet fan can possibly be this optimistic.

I think any combination of 10-2, 11-1 or 12-0 for 2 years and then a 3rd year of 12-0 would definitely get us in. An undefeated 2027 by itself has a strong possibility of getting us a spot. Old Miss, North Carolina, Pitt and Syracuse on the schedule, 1 or 2 of the group of 5's having good years would make it a golden year for us.

It only took 8 minutes for this to age very well.

The truth really hurts like a Mike Tyson uppercut. If your post is not 100% true, it's damn close. I don't know if it would take 3 straight 12-0 seasons, as TheDrifter75 stated in the post above, but it really can't be emphasized enough how big of a ditch UConn Football is trying to get out of-I mean, it's a Grand Canyon size ditch.

Just thinking about Randy Edsall 2.0 makes me want to throw punch and kick combos to the punching bag. What a snake oil salesman that guy was. Even used car salespeople point to him and say, "that is guy sleazy".

UConn would need to win 14 of 12 games for consideration.

There are really 2 different questions.
1. What would it take to get considered?
2. What would it take to get in?

Both depend on more than one factor. But the bar for Q1 is lower than Q2. We would get consideration if we finished 11-1, 12-0 for sure. Let’s say our loss is 35-34 to the ACC champ and we beat the AAC and MWC champs. Not a likely scenario, I’ll grant you but not impossible to imagine. In such a scenario we would absolutely get considered. Or if the next best G5 team is 9-3. And we sit at 11-1 with only a loss to a P4 champ or a really good P4 team. In either scenario or something like these we are at minimum discussed.

Getting in is a different story a bit. We would need to be the best G5 team without doubt I think. If it’s close Boise or Tulane or Memphis or a service academy absolutely gets selected over us.

But ESPN wants to draw interest. And UConn is a brand. Certainly a bigger one than Texas State or Middle Tennessee or Ball State. So if the best G5 was a MAC or a Sunbelt type team and we are appreciably better, I bet they would figure out a way to get us in.

Except they canceled the game lol

1st, you'd have to be ranked at the end of the season. Then on season 2 you would have to be undefeated and ranked in or just outside of the top 10(presuming the cfp goes to 12 teams). There will be prejudice against UConn not being in a power conference so being invited would include going well above and beyond what many others would have to. But.... everyone loves a hard luck, underdog story so if enough national hype is created about this little team that can't get invited into a power conference yet is beating everyone they play it might help the cause.

I think you are underestimating us. Not saying we would be selected but a lot would depend on the scenario. If we were 12-0 and, let’s say Syracuse won the ACC or got to their championship game even. We’d absolutely be in the discussion.
The other problem for any non-P4 team is the level at which good players on a good team would be tampered with down the stretch or simply opt out of playing the final games to "preserve their options". I hope our guys would be more inclined to use those games as opportunities to prove their worth and respect their commitments to the team. It sounds like hopium but we may have a chance to make a statement this year.

I'm just here to read Fishy's response to this post. Two pages deep and no response. That might actually be his response.

Probably a no from the CFP but one would have to think that if we go undefeated, or even 11-1. The opportunity to make the CFP in the future could be a whole lot easier (without derailing the thread. ;))
