Greg Schiano, I know he is like public enemy #1. I just read a story that hes probably getting fired from the Bucs and he would definetly be open to coming back to college. What the guy did for Rutgers was pretty damn good. He took a terrible team and started recruiting the hell out of Rutgers. Brought them in great class after great class. He develops players. I Would be all for it. If he loses hiss jack ass ways of trying to hurt people or just being the he is. But the guy can recruit and he can definetly coach on the college level. The article I read made it seem like he would definetly love to come back to the Northeast to. Or how about Eric "Mangenius" Mangini?

I am not for this at all. To me he was always a better recruiter than he was game day coach. We need someone to coach up our players, as they will never be consistantly the 4 or 5 star players that Bob Burton thought we got before, which we never did and probably never will. He also seems to tick off a LOT of people and burns through an awful lot of QBs (at both levels). I emphatically say NO!

Obviously football is a different sport than basketball, and football teams have way more players, positions, etc, but I'd like to see a coach like Ollie for the men's hoops. I can't see them taking a coach who ONLY has assistant coaching experience, and 2 years to boot like Ollie had... but a young, aggressive, energetic guy who as it turns out, blows families and recruits away with his passion, intensity, and his "10 toes in" philosophy.

I wonder how long it will take the AD and University to hire someone. Seems like it would be hard to pull someone away at this point from another university, especially if that coach has been having good success there.

Nobody can unanimously piss everybody off like a Jersey bag. Greg Shiano is the epitome of a Jersey bag. No thanks I'll pass. Sandusky creeps me out less.

Not without some negatives, but I think you would have to look at that seriously. His record is very good. He needs a good Blaney type, but you can get that.

On one hand Schiano would generate a bit of national buzz around the program and would probably be a better recruiter than either Pasqualoni or Edsall was. On the other hand while he did have some decent win totals he never got Rutgers to the BCS and he probably had a few more losses that should have been wins than, say, Edsall did. Including some WTF losses. Rutgers put a huge amount of money into the stadium expansion and they were very fortunate to get out of the AAC, for UConn there's no guarantees of a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow and less $$$ to burn once the exit fees are paid out.

I would prefer if they shied away from anyone who was recently relieved from their coaching duties due to performance related issues at any level...or quit because they saw the gallows being readied (that means you, Bobby Petrino).

Just like in the game itself...Forward progress.

Do we need to add no RU ties or foe that matter Cuse ties to the official job description?

It's a big wide world out there. I'm setting the bar at outperformed Randy Edsall.

I don't think he would come to UConn and would have quite a bit of interest from schools if he is open to coming back to college football. Regardless of how he is viewed (, bad gameday coach), we would all take him in a heartbeat if he could replicate what he did at Rutgers, here at UConn. That is getting top tier recruits, consistent top 25 teams (even if they don't live up the hype) and national recognition as a solid football school. The guy brought Rutgers from a complete laughing stock program to a national football name (relatively speaking). Maybe his success there was with some smoke and mirrors (they really did not beat anyone great or win the BE), but the end result was a B10 invite because of football because all of their other sports are terrible. Rutgers is in a great position athleticlaly and it is all because of Schiano.

I don't want it. But I posted this after Towson. I hope TJ, makes this a,moot point. But expect there to be mutual interest. Schiano played a huge role in getting RU, to spend big. To me Schiano and Edsall were the same. Edsall better game day coach Schiano the better recruiter.

We could do worse, but we could do better.

The Big Ten invite came because of proximity to the largest media market on the planet, not the success of the football team. You just mentioned all reason to NOT give Coach Schiano a look.

How he is viewed (, bad gameday coach)
Getting [but not coaching up] top tier recruits
Not living up to hype
success [at Rutgers] was with some smoke and mirrors

No...No...and NO!!

Keep away from this guy as far as we can. He is a proven loser and his career at Tampa is exactly what I predicted. He will be fired soon.

Great post.

Not sure I understand all the Schiano hate. His rebuilding job at Rutgers was pretty damn impressive, the players seem to love him and the guy can recruit in NJ which is one of the most talent rich states.

He may not be my first choice, but he has shown he can run a big time program and less we forget, on the field head to head they've been doing pretty damn well against us for quite some time under his coaching or players he recruited.

lmao, I never even thought of it.....but, yeah, it's certainly something to consider.

I think Schiano is good for the college game and connects with his players and on the recruiting trail. I never saw him as a good tactitian and, therefore, never understood why the Bucs took him on.

Very interesting.......

Schiano did a few things VERY well:
  1. Transformed a culture of losing
  2. Energized a fanbase
  3. Brought in great recruits
We need all of those things. Did we question his playcalling? Yes. Noone thought he was a master X and O's guy. However, I never felt like Rutgers put out a product that did not highlight their most talented players. He also ran a clean program that got it done in the classroom. And let's be honest, he's the reason they're in the B1G. Without his success, no 50k+ seat stadium. No fanbase traveling to road games and bowl games. No ratings. I know the media market was the key, but the B1G couldn't have brought in a horrible football product that was averaging 25k+ at home games.

Admittedly much of my Schiano hate is knee-jerk instinctive Rutgers hate. He could recruit, that much is true. But mostly I don't think that Rutgers was ever really as good/consistent as they believe themselves to be. I'd argue that he underachieved at times with quality players.
